The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is an African even-toed ungulate mammal, the tallest living terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant. Its species name refers to its camel-like shape and its leopard-like colouring. Its chief distinguishing characteristics are its extremely long neck and legs, its horn-like ossicones, and its distinctive coat patterns. It is classified under the family Giraffidae, along with its closest extant relative, the okapi. The nine subspecies are distinguished by their coat patterns.
The giraffe's scattered range extends from Chad in the north to South Africa in the south, and from Niger in the west to Somalia in the east. Giraffes usually inhabit savannahs, grasslands, and open woodlands. Their primary food source is acacia leaves, which they browse at heights most other herbivores cannot reach. Giraffes are preyed on by lions; their calves are also targeted by leopards, spotted hyenas, and African wild dogs. Adult giraffes do not have strong social bonds, though they do gather in loose aggregations if they happen to be moving in the same general direction. Males establish social hierarchies through "necking", which are combat bouts where the neck is used as a weapon. Dominant males gain mating access to females, which bear the sole responsibility for raising the young.
Natural history is the research and study of organisms including animals, fungi and plants in their environment, leaning more towards observational than experimental methods of study. It encompasses scientific research but is not limited to it, with articles nowadays more often published in science magazines than in academic journals. Grouped among the natural sciences, natural history is the systematic study of any category of natural objects or organisms. That is a very broad designation in a world filled with many narrowly focused disciplines. So while natural history dates historically from studies in the ancient Greco-Roman world and the mediaeval Arabic world, through to European Renaissance naturalists working in near isolation, today's field is more of a cross discipline umbrella of many specialty sciences. For example, geobiology has a strong multi-disciplinary nature combining scientists and scientific knowledge of many specialty sciences.
A person who studies natural history is known as a naturalist or natural historian.
HISTORY
The Elmwood Park Zoo is located in Norristown, Pennsylvania. The zoo first opened in 1924, when a private landowner donated a small piece of property and a handful of White Tailed Deer to the Borough of Norristown. As time progressed, upgrades became imperative to the living conditions of the animals. The first change was the design of the cages which went from wire, the norm for the early 20th century, to realistic habitats. The first animals that were exhibited came from North and South America. The zoo’s funds were mostly given to them by the Norristown Zoological Society. The NZS declared itself as a non-profit organization in 1985 as it took ownership over the Norristown Borough. Although the NZS had control over the zoo, they still have to consult with the Norristown Borough Council before being able to execute large-scale decisions. The first huge operation that went into action was the expansion of the park that was completed in 2002, and the park size doubled from its original 8-acre size.

UPDATE: LEO Zoological Conservation Center has named the newborn "Sandy Hope" in honor of the victims and families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Newtown, CT. We also will be inviting the families directly affect by the shooting throughout the summer, hopefully to put some smiles on their faces. I was lost in the city when I chanced on a man
Who said he was Jesus, as he held out his hand
I tossed him a quarter and said, "I'm your biggest fan"
"Do you know the way back home?"
And the planet sits waiting for this man to appear
Who will solve all our problems and make everything
clear
Cause we are all prisoners of apathy and fear
And we've lost the way back home
We lost the way back home
Find the way back home
Find a way back home
Find the way back home
But there is no one coming with great things to say
There's no simple solutions, there's no last judgment
There's only the trying to find a better way
To look for the way back home
To look for the way back home
Find the way back home
Find a way back home
Find the way back home
Find a way back home
Find the way back home
I'm walking on pavement where old illusions fall
I'm struck by a sadness
Find a way back home
Find a way back home
Find a way back home
Find a way back home
Find a way back home
And the man who was Jesus lit his last cigarette
And he spoke in a whisper with a voice of regret
"You've all heard the answer, but you're not listening
