Jewellers set for crisis talks with police after spate of frightening robberies

Melbourne jewellers plan to hold crisis meetings in the coming weeks to discuss with police a series of violent armed robberies on jewellery stores in the city's most prestigious suburbs.

Jewellers – including one Toorak jeweller who has been robbed twice since October – will raise their fears of violent thefts by teenage gangs after three jewellery stores were targeted this month.

"We understand that business owners, as well as the wider community, are concerned following a number of incidents over the past couple of months where armed robberies have taken place at jewellery stores," a police spokesman said in a statement on Monday.

"These incidents have a significant impact on victims, whether it's those who are in the store at the time of the offence or those business owners who are left with the loss of stock and damage to their stores."

The crisis meeting comes after a jewellery store worker from IMP Jewellery on Toorak Road, the victim of a violent robbery at the shop in October, became the victim of another hold-up on her first day back to work at the weekend.

Police believe four men of African appearance entered the store just before 1pm on Saturday, with at least one of them brandishing a firearm.

It was Elaine Frankie-French's first day back at the jewellery shop from stress leave since she had a gun held to her head when the store was robbed by who she believes to be the same gang on October 25.

"Four guys ran in the shop, they smashed as they went," she said of the Saturday robbery.

The jewel heist was the third in Melbourne this month, following armed robberies on stores in Canterbury and Elsternwick.

The attack on Holloway Diamonds in Canterbury Road, Canterbury, last week was in broad daylight when young offenders wearing masks took off with a "large quantity" of jewellery.

One teenager appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday in relation to that robbery, with a second set to face the Childrens Court.

"We can assure the community that recent incidents in Toorak and Canterbury are the subject to thorough ongoing investigations," the police statement said.

"We are also meeting with the Jewellers Association later this month in relation to the type of offending taking place, what police are doing to investigate these offences and how jewellers can adopt a number of crime prevention measures."
