Ghana (i/ˈɡɑːnə/), officially called the Republic of Ghana, is a sovereign unitary presidential constitutional democracy, located along the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean, in the subregion of West Africa. Spanning a land mass of 238,535 km2, Ghana is bordered by the Ivory Coast in the west, Burkina Faso in the north, Togo in the east and the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean in the south. The word Ghana means "Warrior King" in Mande.
The territory of present-day Ghana has been inhabited for millennia, with the first permanent state dating back to the 11th century. Numerous kingdoms and empires emerged over the centuries, of which the most powerful was the Kingdom of Ashanti. Beginning in the 15th century, numerous European powers contested the area for trading rights, with the British ultimately establishing control of the coast by the late 19th century. Following over a century of native resistance, Ghana's current borders were established by the 1900s as the British Gold Coast. In 1957, it became the first sub-saharan African nation to declare independence from European colonisation.

Hospitals, clinics and pharmacies in Ghana are fast running out of funds to continue operating. Many have not received payments owed to them by the government under a national health insurance scheme, and if they are forced to close or scale down operations it could affect millions who rely on public healthcare services. Health care delivery in Ghana leaves much to be desired especially in the rural areas. The country continues to record high infant and maternal mortality. Many people also die easily from preventable or treatable diseases. The situation has raised concerns on where Ghana stands with regard to provision of quality health care. Stakeholders are calling for more strict regulations in the practice of medicine in order to reduce mortality resulting from negligence of health practitioners.
In spite of some successes chalked by the Ghana Health Service with the implementation of a Universal Health care system, Ghana is far from achieving Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 which target the reduction of child mortality and improved maternal health care delivery. The Ghana Health Service is working to improve health care delivery this year.

Ghana is on high alert over possible terror threats. A memo from Ghana's Immigration Service says the country is the next target for Islamist militants. They say Togo too is apparently at risk. This follows high-profile attacks this year in Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire. The memo says the National Security Council Secretariat has evidence from neighbouring Cote d'Ivoire from the interrogation of a man suspected of orchestrating the attack on March 13 in which 18 people were killed. It has also ordered immigration agents on the northern border with Burkina Faso to be extra alert and said patrols should be stepped up along informal routes between the two countries. President John Mahama is calling on people to be vigilant.

We went to Pakistan to invesitage why suicide bombings, IED use, and the Taliban are all growing at alarming rates. In a recent trip to Pakistan to report on the recent spike in the region's violence and bloodshed, Suroosh Alvi heard over and over the same sentiment from people on the ground: America's war on terror is falling flat on its face. The military conflict in neighboring Afghanistan, repeatedly cited by locals, sends a constant flood of guns, refugees, militants, and heroin flowing into Pakistan. Heroin is now actually cheaper than hashish in cities like Lahore, and the Kalashnikov culture, the foundation of which was laid 30 years ago when the CIA financed the mujahideen, is all-consuming. According to the Pakistanis he spoke to, it's all taken a devastating toll on the country...

Partial Transcript: So one thing I noticed when I went to Accra in Ghana is that it was very dirty. There was a lot of litter on the streets. A lot of trash on the streets. And there is big ditches on the side of the roads. There are big gutters and they're open. There's like slimy green brown water in them and they smell like feces and urine and there's trash in them. It's really disgusting. And then sometimes, actually, very often I saw people going to the bathroom in these gutters on the sides of the roads. When I went to Accra one thing that surprised me as soon as I got out of the airport, it was amazing, but I saw people, especially a lot of women walking around with big containers or plates on there heads, and just walking, carrying these big large objects on their heads. I've seen...

We cover various shopping tips as he explores this bustling environment. Firstly, know what you’re after and when the best time is to get it. Haggle on the price (when this is an accepted custom of the region), know your currency and value of the exchange rate. Be aware of your personal belongings, and remember your bearings (as not to get lost when you’ve finished shopping).

The trees were all decked out in their best fall colors
There was a snap in the air
When you eased down the window
And the New York sun brought out the highlights in your
hair
And gently, gently
The constellations aligned
And as we crossed over the Frogneck's Bridge
I had something on my mind
When we rolled down the street
In the cool of the morning
I could feel the new day dawn
And somebody had gone and turned the waterworks on
And slowly, surely
I saw the whole story unwind
I had never loved anyone like I loved you
And I had something on my mind
