Backstroke is one of the four swimming styles regulated by FINA, and the only regulated style swum on the back. This has the advantage of easy breathing, but the disadvantage of swimmers not being able to see where they are going. It is also the only competition swimming style that has a different start. The swimming style is similar to an upside down front crawl. Both backstroke and front crawl are long-axis strokes. In Individual medley backstroke is the second style swum; in the team medley it is the first style swum.
Backstroke is an ancient style of swimming, popularized by Harry Hebner. It was the second stroke to be swum in competitions after the front crawl. The first Olympic backstroke competition was the 1900 Paris Olympics men's 200 metre.
In the initial position, the swimmer performing backstroke lies flat on the back; arms stretched with extended fingertips, and legs extended backwards.
In backstroke, the arms contribute most of the forward movement. The arm stroke consists of two main parts: the power phase (consisting of three separate parts) and the recovery. The arms alternate so that always one arm is underwater while the other arm is recovering. One complete arm turn is considered one cycle. From the initial position, one arm sinks slightly under water and turns the palm outward to start the catch phase (first part of the power phase). The hand enters downward (pinkie finger first) then pulling out at a 45 degree angle, catching the water.
Matthew Grevers (born March 26, 1985) is an American competition swimmer who competes in the backstroke and freestyle events, and is a six-time Olympic medalist. He has won a total of thirty-three medals in major international competition, fourteen gold, twelve silver, and seven bronze spanning the Olympics, World Championships, and the Universiade. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Grevers won gold medals as a member of the U.S. teams in the 4×100-meter freestyle and 4×100-meter medley relays, and a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke. Four years later at the 2012 Summer Olympics, he won a gold in the 100-meter backstroke and the 4×100-meter medley relay, and a silver in the 4×100-meter freestyle.
At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, Grevers won two gold medals by swimming in the preliminary heats of the 4×100-meter freestyle relay and 4×100-meter medley relay (swimming the backstroke leg) as the Americans went on to win the finals in those events and medals are awarded to participants at any step along the way. Grevers also won an individual silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke in a time of 53.11-second, 0.57 of a second behind the winner, world record holder Aaron Peirsol.

Nicholas Brewer Thoman (born March 6, 1986) is an American competition swimmer who specializes in the backstroke and is an Olympic gold medalist. He has won two world championships as a member of winning United States medley relay teams at the FINA World Aquatics Championships. From 2009 to 2015 he held the world record in the 100-meter backstroke (short course). Thoman has won a total of ten medals in major international competition, four gold, three silver, and three bronze spanning the Olympics, World Championships, Pan Pacific Championships, Pan American Games, and the Summer Universiade. He was a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team, and won gold and silver medals at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
On December 6, 2013, at the U.S. national championships in Knoxville Tennessee, Thoman set three American records in one evening. He broke the American record in the 50-yard backstroke (20.69), was part of an American record-breaking 200-yard medley relay (with E. Knight, T. Phillips and C. Jones, 1:23.02) and shattered the American record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 44.07.

Backstroke - TEEDRA MOSES
Backstroke Technique The movement of the arms in backstroke is somewhat unique. However, the most important movement of the stroke is the shoulders and hip rotation. In this video we will talk about the rotation, so subscribe in order to watch the next video in which we will go over the hand movement. The rotation of the shoulders in backstroke is a especially important technique for two reasons: 1- Because it helps prevent shoulder injury. When you rotate you set yourself in a better angle, preventing overextension of certain shoulder muscles and using bigger back muscles to help you pull. 2- You can generate more speed with the counter-rotation of the opposite shoulder that will work as a lever to help the other arm’s pull. While doing the rotation it is very important to keep yo...

The Hilton Lobby Backstroke competition is an annual tradition at SXSW. Competitors will quickly come in, drop to the ground, then race across the lobby floor to claim the winning title. It's always a close race, and exciting to watch. Danny Newman and Dennis Crowley take the lead, as others try to keep up. The highlight for me this year was Baratunde Thurston. Watch as he happily pushes his way through the crowd.
Every year since starting it in 2005, Danny Newman and Dennis Crowley have been closing out SXSWi with a competitive backstroke race across the floor of the Austin Hilton Hotel lobby. Danny won for the fifth straight year and, same as last year, Heather Capri provided expert pre and post race commentary. Hope you enjoy this rough cut from the event!
The 3rd Annual SXSW Hilton Lobby Olympic Backstroke Competition. World record holder Danny Newman returns to defend his title against the always-runner-up Dennis Crowley. Among the other contestants is newcomer Andy Smith, and onlookers Pete Cashmore and Aubrey Sabala. Who will be Victor?

Backstroke If your swimmer is competent at performing Pat the Dog, then the backstroke arms can be introduced. Just like Freestyle, we simplify the stroke when first teaching it and use a technique called Single-arm Backstroke. Just like Catch-up freestyle, Single-arm makes it easy for a child to understand and perform the skill that’s being asked. If they find this easy, then simply move on to traditional (Olympic) Backstroke. Four easy steps to Backstroke: 1. Standing Single-arm 2. Single arm drills 3. Standing Olympic Backstroke 4. Olympic Backstroke
Focus on body alignment; rotate from your hips and shoulders (not from your kick). Go 25's or 50's alternating sides.
[Verse 1]
Picture me in one of those two seater things
Top down so thoughts of you are in the breeze
And the wind
And the wind
And the wind
Winds in my hair
But each time I say I won't be back around
You get me back around
And I know you bring me down
But still sometimes
You seem to get me high
[Chorus]
Oh poppi
I sit and think about all of the things
We go thru
And I wonder why I stay with you
But there's something in your backstroke
And it keeps me yearning for you
Something's in your backstroke
[Verse 2]
Here it is
I'mma make it plain
I'mma lay it on the line
(lay it on the line)
Mostly I feel you're just
A waste of my time
But oooh.. I want you
(I gotta have ya) (really don't need u)
But it's the way u love me
That keeps me thinking poppi oh I
[Chorus]
And it keeps me yearning u
And it keeps me yearning u
And it keeps me yearning u
And it keeps me yearning u
[Bridge]
I can't do this forever but right now I'd rather
just give in and get your love 2night
[Chorus]
