Anfernee Deon "Penny" Hardaway (born July 18, 1971) is a retired American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA), specializing as an unconventionally tall point guard. Hardaway's most productive years came in his days as a member of the Orlando Magic as well as the early portion of his stint with the Phoenix Suns. Hardaway often was compared to Magic Johnson during his tenure because both had incredible size and quickness at the point guard position. Hardaway was an All-NBA player early in his career, but was plagued by constant injuries which gradually reduced his effectiveness. He played for the New York Knicks from 2004 to 2006 and last played for the Miami Heat, who released him December 12, 2007.
Hardaway's nickname came as a result of his grandmother's calling him "Pretty" with a southern drawl, thus sounding like "Penny." Hardaway was raised by his grandmother while his mother was away working. His first love was football but his grandmother did not want him to get hurt. He grew up in the Binghampton neighborhood of shotgun houses in Memphis, Tennessee. As a teenager, despite his rising popularity around the city, in high school, and the nation, Hardaway continued to work as a referee of youth sports at the Memphis YMCA and played on the Memphis Y.M.C.A. Jr. Olympic basketball teams as a youth.

Penny's interview after 30 for 30: This Magic Moment
Classic Penny Hardaway is the ultimate highlight video encompassing the best years of Anfernee Hardaway's career. Starting with his promise as a young talent at Memphis State in 1992 and 1993 to his meteoric rise to NBA stardom with the Orlando Magic in 1994 and 1995. Injuries in subsequent years unfortunately diminished his game, but one cannot deny that Anfernee 'Penny' Hardaway was a gifted talent that had the potential to be a hall of famer and NBA legend. This tape was compiled and edited in 1996 from numerous VHS tapes that I recorded of Penny early in his career. Every time I watch this compilation, I try not to think about what might have been, nonetheless, it was fun while it lasted! Thanks for the memories, Penny!
