What's New

Save the date for our 2017 AWG Field Trip!
Central California Tectonics

September 23-29, 2017
Leaders: Tanya Atwater, with Art Sylvester for a few days.  Both are UC Santa Barbara emeriti.

Join us for a 6-day tour of central California geology and tectonics lead by pioneer of west coast plate tectonics, Tanya Atwater, and accompanied our first few days by Art Sylvester, co-author of Roadside Geology of Southern California (2016).  Our trip will begin in Burbank, then head north crisscrossing the San Andreas Fault, with nights in Bakersfield, Paso Robles, and Hollister.  Along the way, we plan to see the intersection of the San Andreas Fault and the Garlock Fault, the Buena Vista Natural History Museum, Carrizo Plain, the Parkfield area, Pinnacles National Park, and the Calaveras Fault at Hollister.  Then we’ll head west to the coast and down the beautiful Big Sur Highway, with nights at Big Sur and Morro Bay.  Along the way, we’ll spend some time in San Juan Bautista for a last look at the San Andreas Fault (and the restored old Spanish mission), and Monterey (with time to visit the world-class aquarium or just wander the historic town).  We’ll make several stops along the Big Sur coast, Morro Bay, and the Santa Barbara area, ending back in Burbank.

The trip price is tentatively $1500, which will include 6 nights lodging (double occupancy except for one night at triple occupancy), most breakfasts, all lunches, and one or two group dinners.  Transportation will be by rental van (primary drivers receive a 10% discount).  A limited number of single rooms will be available for an additional $600 or so.  Watch for a final announcement in AWG E-news and the AWG home page in early-mid February with registration information.  This trip is limited to 15 participants, so once registration is open, don’t delay!  Please contact Marcia Knadle (marciaawg@aol.com) if you’re interested in coming or have questions.

**And a special member involvement opportunity -- call for a field trip committee co-chair**

For several years, we've been fortunate to have two field trip committee chairs, generally trading off between organizing the annual trips and serving as support and backup for each other.  After several years of outstanding service, Sue Finstick is moving on to other challenges.  The remaining field trip committee chair, Marcia Knadle, would love to have a new co-chair.  Marcia has committed to organizing trips for the next two years, so the first year a new co-chair would have primary responsibility would be 2019.  Please contact Marcia (marciaawg@aol.com) or Sue (suefinstick01@gmail.com) if you have questions about what's involved.  The primary benefit is that you get to help choose locations for trips!

Continuing the conversation to change how we deal with sexual harassment in the sciences: A call for change!

AWG recently co-sponsored an NSF funded workshop titled "Sexual Harassment in the Sciences: A Call to Respond". In addition, current president Blair Schneider and former president Mary Anne Holmes served on the steering committee to bring this workshop to fruition. See the following press release here or at http://news.agu.org/press-release/scientific-societies-speak-out-against-sexual-harassment/.

AWG mourns the loss of Dr. M. Lee Allison

Dr. M. Lee Allison, State Geologist and Director of the Arizona Geological Survey, passed away Tuesday, August 16th, at noon after suffering a critical head injury from a fall at his home on Saturday. Dr. Allison was a great supporter of AWG, both nationally and with the local chapters.

Lee’s passing is a tragic loss for his wife, family, staff of the Arizona Geological Survey, the geologic and geoinformatics communities, and Lee’s broad circle of friends, colleagues, and acquaintances around the world. He was an incredibly dynamic leader of our agency, and a world-wide leader in many areas that were important to him. We mourn his passing, and will do our best to carry on his legacy.

There will not be a memorial service. Lee’s family has requested they not be contacted. Any messages of condolence can be addressed to AZGS team members who will pass them along to his family.

Lee's wife, Ann, suggested donations be made to the Association for Women Geoscientists/Salt Lake Chapter to honor Dr. Allison. If you would like to make a donation, you can either do so online or by check. If you would like to donate online, click on "Donate Now" in the top right corner of this page. This will take you to our online store where you will see the "Dr. M. Lee Allison Memorial Fund" as the first item. If you would like to send a check, please make sure to make the check payable to "AWG Foundation", and write Dr. M. Lee Allison Fund on the memo line. Checks can be sent to:

or

AWG Salt Lake Chapter

If you are writing a check:
The checks must include the word "Foundation" in order to be tax deductible. If you donate $250 or more, you will receive a written acknowledgment according to IRS requirements. For those donations less than $250, your tax deduction can be declared without a receipt (a copy of your check or a record of information listed on your credit card will suffice for taxes purposes).
