The Big Chill has hit Britain today, forcing flights to be cancelled and bringing chaos on the roads as snow and hurricane-force winds of up to 93mph sweep the country. The cold snap is set to last for three days and has already caused travel disruption and crashes in Scotland (top left and centre, the A77 in Ayrshire) and northern parts of England this morning. Heathrow Airport has been forced to cancel 80 flights as the adverse weather reached the South East. Four British Airways flights from Gatwick Airport have also been cancelled. The Met Office has said up to eight inches of snow could fall, with much of the country under a severe weather warning. High winds have caused widespread problems to roads and rail networks and thousands of properties have been left without power. And forecasters are warning of more dangerous conditions to follow, as the heavy snow (top right, Stirling) is set to spread wider over tomorrow and Saturday. Mixed with continuing high winds, it could lead to 'blizzard-like conditions' with severe weather warnings in place. There were road closures (bottom left and bottom right, the M74 in South Lanarkshire) and accidents all over the country as motorists struggled to cope with the weather.

BBC doc shows NHS doctors forced to decide between saving cancer patient or pensioner

Doctors were forced to decide between saving a cancer patient or a pensioner bleeding to death during the first episode of BBC2's Hospital last night. A woman, known only as Janice (top), was rushed to the A&E; department at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington after suffering from a ruptured blood vessel. But hospital staff had already prepared Simon (bottom), who suffers from cancer in his oesophagus, for life-saving surgery. The increasing demand on the hospital had meant there was just one bed remaining - despite being enough surgeons to perform both procedures. Simon had already seen his operation - which would save his life - cancelled once before. However, if Janice wasn't seen to immediately then she would bleed to death.

Ex-MI6 spy Christopher Steele flees his £1.5m home 'fearing for his life'

Ex-MI6 agent Christopher Steele has been named as the author of the salacious 'dirty' Russian dossier containing outlandish claims about Donald Trump's sex life and bizarre footage held by the Kremlin's blackmail unit. Steele, 52, was seen fleeing his gated Surrey home (top right) in his car yesterday and appears to have been in such a rush most of the lights were left on. A security source said: 'He is terrified for his safety', adding he may now be abroad or in a safe house. Mr Steele served MI6 for nearly two decades in Moscow and security sources say he once worked with murdered Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko. After leaving the secret service he set up a security business based in a grand Belgravia office block with Christopher Burrows (bottom right today), also a former MI6 agent. He refused to discuss the report, if his colleague had written it or where he was hiding. Mr Steele was reportedly hired by enemies of Donald Trump and was asked to do a 'general' trawl on the billionaire's links to Russia. A former colleague said he is 'more showy and less grounded in reality than you might expect a former SIS (MI6) person to be'.

Foreign correspondent Paul Wood said last night that former British spy Christopher Steele is not the only person to say the Kremlin has covert footage related to his sex life.

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper says he has spoken with Donald Trump about the unsubstantiated report claiming Russia had compromising personal and financial information about the president-elect.

Downing Street is trying to distance itself from the row after the British former spy who produced outlandish claims compromising material held by the Kremlin was named as Christopher Steele.

PIERS MORGAN: The only hookers in Trump story are the cheap, lazy journalists

No, President-elect Donald Trump didn't pay prostitutes to urinate on his bed in the presidential suite at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Moscow, three years ago. Neither did Trump do this to deliberately defile a bed that had been used by Barack and Michelle Obama. Buzzfeed, the website part-owned by NBC that broke ranks and published the allegations and edited by Ben Smith admits it has no evidence to prove it's true, has not been able to independently verify it, and may never be able to verify it.

Donald Trump denounced the release of the 'dirty dossier' this morning after it was reported that he was told in a briefing that Russia had compromising personal and financial information about him.

Speaking to her producer, the presenter said: 'I need Julie to put a jacket on because we're all in white. I asked her before we came on... Julie you need to put a jacket on. Can you tell who’s the mother and who’s the daughter?

Designer dogs rise eightfold in a decade... so can you tell a shorkie from a puggle

What do you get when you cross a pug with a beagle, a shihtzu with a Yorkshire terrier or a maltese with a poodle? The answer is Britain's latest pet craze - as 'puggles', 'shorkies' (shown number 1) and 'maltipoos' (number 4) have seen the number of designer dogs rise almost eightfold in a decade. Last year the most popular were the 'cockapoo' (number 6), a cross between a cocker spaniel and poodle, and the 'labradoodle', a mixture of labrador and poodle, according to research. Crossbred dogs are often family-friendly, having inherited some of the best traits from their breeding pairs. They are also hypoallergenic, so allergy-sufferers can own them. Owners include Jennifer Aniston, who has a labradoodle (number 3), and Sylvester Stallone, who has a puggle (number 5). White Cross Vets, which has 16 practices, said that in 2006 it had 115 designer crossbreeds registered. By last year, it had 886.
