Georgia borders the Black Sea between Turkey and Russia and was ruled by Moscow for most of the two centuries preceding the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union. Both South Ossetia and Abkhazia have run their own affairs without international recognition since fighting to split from Georgia in the early 1990s.
Both separatist provinces have close ties with Moscow, while Georgia has deeply angered Russia by wanting to join NATO.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Georgia. The capital of Georgia is Tblisi, a wonderful blend of old and new architecture. But where is Georgia? Some say it’s in Asia, but most consider it a part of Europe.

1. Spoken Georgian (kartvelian) is like no other language you are likely to hear. It belongs to its own ancient linguistic group unlike any other language spoken outside the region. It includes rare sounds that many visitors may never have heard before. Georgian has its own 33-letter alphabet thought to be based on the sort of Aramaic spoken in the time of Jesus. To the untutored eye, the letters look very much alike. But even without understanding it, Georgian writing is beautiful, a myriad of theatrical swirls and flourishes.
2. Take a look at a map and you'll find the former Soviet republic 1,000km east of the Bosphorus, marooned in Asia. One definition of Europe marks the Caucasus Mountains as its border, putting Georgia firmly in Asia. Other definitions place the whole Caucasus region, including Georgia, in Europe which is where most Georgians feel it belongs.
3. Georgia isn't called Georgia by Georgians. They call their country Sakartvelo. One theory suggests that the origins of the country's name come from the Middle Ages when Christian crusaders swept through the region on their way to the Holy Land. At that time, it was part of the Persian Empire and the people here were known as "Gurj". They were also devotees of St George.
4. The little streets of Tbilisi makes you forget about Paris or Venice! Cute little alleys and streets all over the city. It definitely has its charm and you could almost say Tbilisi is the Paris of Eurasia.
5. Ever heard of Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili? Born in Gori, he became one of the most important rulers in the history of mankind. After becoming the leader of the Soviet Union, he ordered the imprisonment and execution of millions, starved Ukrainians to submission, lead his country to victory in WW2 and brought most of eastern Europe under the control of Moscow. You may know him by his Russian name: Joseph Stalin.
6. Georgia contains 2 de facto independent regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which gained limited international recognition after the 2008 Russo-Georgian War. Georgia and a major part of the international community consider the regions to be part of Georgia's sovereign territory under Russian military occupation.
7. Georgia launched a large-scale military operation against South Ossetia during the night of 7–8 August 2008 to "restore constitutional order" in the region. 11,000 soldiers took part in the general Georgian offensive. Russia officially sent troops across the border, claiming to be defending both peacekeepers and South Ossetian civilians. In 5 days of fighting, the Russian forces pushed back Georgian troops and largely destroyed Georgia’s military infrastructure. Russia recognised Abkhazia and South Ossetia on 26 August 2008. In response, the Georgian government cut diplomatic relations with Russia.

Seven years ago today, Georgia attacked its then breakaway republic of South Ossetia with the aim of bringing it back under Tbilisi's control. Over night heavy artillery pounded the capital also targeting Russian peacekeepers in the area. Hundreds of civilians and over 70 peacekeepers were killed in the following days.

Plot: Ronny Bowers, a saxophonist in 'Benny Goodman (I)' (qv)'s band has won a talent contest an got a ten week contract with a film studio. On his first evening he is supposed to go with the studio's star Mona Marshall to a movie premiere. But this lady doesn't want to go, so the bosses decide to use for Mona a double, Virginia. When Mona finds out next morning that happened, she insisted to fire her double and Ronny. Ronny finds work as singing waiter in a drive in, and is spotted by a director of the same studio, who wants him to lend his voice for an leading actor in a musical. After the first screening the actor is invited by Louella Parsons to sing in her program "Hollywood Hotel". He accepts, but he doesn't know that Ronny Bowers does not want to lend him his voice again. So everybody starts to play his little game to solve his own problems.

Georgia borders the Black Sea between Turkey and Russia and was ruled by Moscow for most of the two centuries preceding the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union. Both South Ossetia and Abkhazia have run their own affairs without international recognition since fighting to split from Georgia in the early 1990s.
Both separatist provinces have close ties with Moscow, while Georgia has deeply angered Russia by wanting to join NATO.

1. Spoken Georgian (kartvelian) is like no other language you are likely to hear. It belongs to its own ancient linguistic group unlike any other language spoken outside the region. It includes rare sounds that many visitors may never have heard before. Georgian has its own 33-letter alphabet thought to be based on the sort of Aramaic spoken in the time of Jesus. To the untutored eye, the letters look very much alike. But even without understanding it, Georgian writing is beautiful, a myriad of theatrical swirls and flourishes.
2. Take a look at a map and you'll find the former Soviet republic 1,000km east of the Bosphorus, marooned in Asia. One definition of Europe marks the Caucasus Mountains as its border, putting Georgia firmly in Asia. Other definitions place the whole Caucasus region, including Georgia, in Europe which is where most Georgians feel it belongs.
3. Georgia isn't called Georgia by Georgians. They call their country Sakartvelo. One theory suggests that the origins of the country's name come from the Middle Ages when Christian crusaders swept through the region on their way to the Holy Land. At that time, it was part of the Persian Empire and the people here were known as "Gurj". They were also devotees of St George.
4. The little streets of Tbilisi makes you forget about Paris or Venice! Cute little alleys and streets all over the city. It definitely has its charm and you could almost say Tbilisi is the Paris of Eurasia.
5. Ever heard of Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili? Born in Gori, he became one of the most important rulers in the history of mankind. After becoming the leader of the Soviet Union, he ordered the imprisonment and execution of millions, starved Ukrainians to submission, lead his country to victory in WW2 and brought most of eastern Europe under the control of Moscow. You may know him by his Russian name: Joseph Stalin.
6. Georgia contains 2 de facto independent regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which gained limited international recognition after the 2008 Russo-Georgian War. Georgia and a major part of the international community consider the regions to be part of Georgia's sovereign territory under Russian military occupation.
7. Georgia launched a large-scale military operation against South Ossetia during the night of 7–8 August 2008 to "restore constitutional order" in the region. 11,000 soldiers took part in the general Georgian offensive. Russia officially sent troops across the border, claiming to be defending both peacekeepers and South Ossetian civilians. In 5 days of fighting, the Russian forces pushed back Georgian troops and largely destroyed Georgia’s military infrastructure. Russia recognised Abkhazia and South Ossetia on 26 August 2008. In response, the Georgian government cut diplomatic relations with Russia.

Georgia wants to be the link between China and Europe, which they hope will be one of the country’s growth drivers. At the moment Georgia is negotiating a free trade agreement with the Asian giant and they are already a part of the free trade area of the EU. Last year, the department’s director of small business, Mary Ellen McClanahan, directly assisted 1,300 companies and advised 150 communities and organizations. The Centers of Innovation connected and assisted nearly 4,000 Georgia companies during 2014, up 30 percent from the previous fiscal year. And the International Trade division received the Presidential “E Star” Award, the nation’s highest honor for excellence in providing export programs and services. More than 14,500 Georgia companies exported $37.6 billion in goods and services to 230 countries and territories in 2013. In FY 2013, GDEcD’s International Trade division worked with 1,346 companies in Georgia. Work with these companies resulted in 420 export deals that were valued at $35.9 million.
These are just a few of the reasons why Georgia is consistently ranked as the top state for business.

The Avenue starts at Freedom Square and extends for about 1.5 km in length, before it turns into an extension of Kostavas Kucha (Kostava Street). Rustaveli is often considered as the main thoroughfare of Tbilisi due to a large number of governmental, public, cultural, and business buildings that are located along or near the Avenue. The Parliament of Georgia, Kashveti Church, the Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia (part of the Georgian National Museum), the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Rustaveli State Academic Theater, the Rustaveli Museum, and the Georgian Academy of Sciences, among others, are all located on Rustaveli. The thoroughfare is served by the Tbilisi Metro and buses.
In 1989, tens of thousands of Georgians gathered before the House of Government on Rustaveli Avenue. An attack by the Soviet spetsnaz forces killed many protesters in the April 9 tragedy.
In 2007, the avenue was site of anti-government protests.

The organizers of rally demanding decriminalization with quite carefully formed demands in three points:
1. Our goal is to protect personal liberty and not to popularize marijuana;
2. Maybe the use of marijuana not preferred but in the 21st century a state prosecution of users unacceptable for a civilized world.
3. We think that there should be a categorization of drugs - marijuana should be separated from those drugs which are subject to criminal prosecution and to be decriminalized the use of this drug. The administrative fine with a reasonable amount should be imposed only for using marijuana in the public places.

STORYLINE
Russian armoured vehicles rolled deep into central and western Georgia on Monday, quickly taking control of a key city, several towns and a military base, according to Georgian officials and witnesses.
Georgia's president said Russian troops had effectively sliced his country in half.
Fighting also raged on Monday around Tskhinvali, the capital of the separatist province of South Ossetia.
Russian warplanes also launched new air raids across Georgia.
The reported capture of the key Georgian city of Gori and the towns of Senaki, Zugdidi and Kurga came despite a top Russian general's claim earlier on Monday that Russia had no plans to enter Georgian territory.
By taking Gori, which sits on Georgia's only east-west highway, Russia can cut off eastern Georgia from the country's western Black Sea coast.
The news agency Interfax, however, cited a Russian Defence Ministry official as denying reports that Gori was captured.
The two-front battlefield was a major escalation in the conflict that blew up late on Thursday after a Georgian offensive to regain control of the separatist province of South Ossetia.
Even as Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili signed a cease-fire pledge on Monday with EU mediators, Russia flexed its military muscle and appeared determined to subdue the small US ally that has been pressing for NATO membership.
On Monday afternoon, Russian troops moved deeper into Georgia from the western separatist province of Abkhazia while most Georgian forces were busy with fighting in the central region around South Ossetia.
In the city of Gori, an AP reporter heard artillery fire and Georgian soldiers warned locals to get out because Russian tanks were approaching.
Hundreds of terrified residents fled toward Tbilisi using any means of transport they could find.
An AP Television film crew saw Georgian tanks, military vehicles and civilian cars speeding along the road from Gori to Tbilisi.
The crew said it filmed one Georgian tank in the convoy being shelled, causing a large explosion.
A reporter said that a civilian car also appeared to have been shelled, but could not confirm whether its passengers harmed.
The tank and vehicle could be seen in flames along the side of the road.
Russian armoured personnel carriers also moved into Senaki, a town 20 miles (30 kilometres) inland from Georgia's Black Sea port of Poti, Security Council head Alexander Lomaia said.
AP Television filmed a freight train carrying Russian troops approach the town.
Several buildings were also damaged, including a railway track.

Georgia marked Independence Day on Friday with the country's largest-ever military parade.
18-thousand personnel participated in a march-past in front of the Parliament building in the centre of Tbilisi.
Armoured personnel carriers (APCs) and other armour was involved. There was also an Air Force flypast.
Georgian President Michael Saakashvili used the occasion to address the nation.
"We did everything to create such an army that will became the pride for each of us, for the whole of Georgia. We have created an army that does not scare anyone, except those who try to make an attempt on Georgia's independence," Saakashvili said.
Building a strong army is one of the key points in Saakashvili's presidential agenda, as Georgia has lost control of its two provinces of Abkhazia and South Osetia.
Georgia is also striving to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).
While Georgian authorities were attending military parade, several hundred opposition activists and supporters of a wanted former security minister marched in central Tbilisi to mark Georgia's independence day and protest against the current government.
The demonstration in Tblisi was organised by a loose coalition of opposition parties calling themselves "Anti Soros".
Activists accuse the foundation of the US billionaire philanthropist George Soros of funding the 2003 'Rose Revolution' that brought Saakashvili to power.
The protesters tried to break through a police cordon and move closer to the Parliament building and the parade.
The protesters accuse Saakashvili's government of failing to conduct democratic reforms and of not improving living standards in the country.
The ex-Security Minister Igor Giorgadze is wanted by Georgian police in connection with an assassination attempt on former President, Eduard Shevardnadze.

Mtskheta (Georgian: მცხეთა), one of the oldest cities of the country of Georgia (in Kartli province of Eastern Georgia), is located approximately 20 kilometers north of Tbilisi at the confluence of the Aragvi and Kura rivers. The city (population 19,423 as of January 1, 2008) is now the administrative centre of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. Due to its historical significance and numerous ancient monuments, the "Historical Monuments of Mtskheta" became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
The old city lies at the confluence of the rivers Mtkvari and Aragvi. The rare blend of cultural values had ruled in this part of the world since the Bronze Age until prosperous Christian era over the unique eclectic lifestyle creating the mood of the town which is as old as the history of Georgia. Founded in the 5th century by Vakhtang Gorgasali, the monarch of Georgia's precursor Kingdom of Iberia, Tbilisi has served, with various intervals, as Georgia's capital for nearly 1500 years and represents a significant industrial, social, and cultural center of the country. Mtskheta (Georgian: მცხეთა), one of the oldest cities of the country of Georgia (in Kartli province of Eastern Georgia), is located approximately 20 kilometers north of Tbilisi at the confluence of the Aragvi and Kura rivers. The city (population 19,423 as of January 1, 2008) is now the administrative centre of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. Due to its historical significance and numerous ancient monuments, the "Historical Monuments of Mtskheta" became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
The old city lies at the confluence of the rivers Mtkvari and Aragvi. The rare blend of cultural values had ruled in this part of the world since the Bronze Age until prosperous Christian era over the unique eclectic lifestyle creating the mood of the town which is as old as the history of Georgia. Georgia has protected its artistic heritage and been able to maintain the vibrancy of its unique traditions. It has conserved a biodiversity greater than that of some continents, and has a magnetism which draws people back to visit over and over again. Although as small as Switzerland, Georgia is big in all aspects; a progressive nation, European in attitude and Western in spirit; a real Caucasian country with the joy of the Mediterranean.
The vast vineyards of the Eastern Region of Kakheti, home to the largest wineries in the nation, are a clear illustration of this passion. In Georgia, there are a considerable number of grape varieties, more than anywhere else in the world.
In Kakheti, almost everything revolves around wine. Proof of this is the XVI century wine cellar in Velistsikhe, in which the traditional “kvevri” are still used: clay barrels buried underground that maintain a constant temperature to ensure optimal fermentation.
Tbilisi (tiflis), founded as a fortress-city in the V century, is the nation’s capital, its largest city and has been admired by famous people such as Leon Tolstoy and Alexander Dumas. Every corner of Tbilisi is quite captivating. Its bewitching spell is cast over the whole of this safe and friendly metropolis in which guests are considered a “gift from God”. At the end of the harvest, colourful folkloric celebrations take place in the wine making areas.
The fertile Valley of Alazani, in the Region of Kakheti, is renowned because of the excellence of its grapes and because it is the source of outstanding wines such as Khindzmarauli and Gurdjani.
Sighnaghi is one of the smallest towns in the country, but it has the second longest wall in the world, after China, also known as “the city of love” is also celebrated for its renowned grape harvest. The Tusheti National Reserve is one of the most beautiful areas of Georgia. Vashlovani National Park, in the south-eastern part of the country, has a semi-desert ecosystem and is an excellent example of the varied bio-diversity to be found in Georgia. One of the 13 Assyrian Holy Fathers who arrived in Georgia in order to strengthen Christianity, David Gareja, is buried here, and on his tomb there is a stone that symbolizes the one that the distinguished Patriarch brought in his journey from the Holy Land.
Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is in the centre of the country and it constitutes 1% of the territory of Georgia. Borjomi-Kharagauli, surrounded by the magical atmosphere of the Lower Caucasus, is the most visited Park in Georgia and has a large number of recreational activities on offer. In 1830, it was rumoured that springs from the Borjomi-Kharagauli Nature Reserve contained healing properties, and 60 years later, the first bottling plant of the now world-famous Borjomi water, was created. It is unique because of its naturally mineralized hydro carbonated sodium and therapeutic qualities.
Shatili is located on the narrow pass of Arghuni, on the northern slope of the Great Caucasus. Sixty percent of Georgian territory are mountains. There a lots of fantastic opportunities for all kind of people who like nature, who like mountains. There are five peaks in the Caucasus in Georgia over 5000 meters, which gives really great opportunities for the amateur climbers. Apart from mountaineering these mountains give brilliant opportunities just for those who like nature, so you can do two or three weeks continuous tracks in a totally wild environment, plus there are lots of opportunities for rafting, canoeing, canyoning or any mountain activities. Georgia has two ski resorts: Bakuriani, to the south of Borjomi, at an altitude of 1,700 metres has conditions that are ideal for family skiing. Gudauri, in the Upper Caucasus, at 2,000 metres, has steep slopes which will satisfy the most extreme athletes.

INTRODUCTION: HOW THIS MIR TOUR WAS CREATED
Music and mountains are just two reasons why I'm so taken with Georgia. It's my favorite place in the world, and, I think, everything you could wish for in a destination. Georgia has been called an "undiscovered little gem" of a country in the South Caucasus – big on beauty, history and culture, hospitality, and most of all its legendary food and wine.
I first visited Georgia in the early 1990s, after it declared its independence from the Soviet Union, and I go back as often as I can. So many travelers ask me about Georgia that I decided to design a tour for MIR called "A Taste of Georgia: Wine, Cuisine & Culture." These are a few of my favorite highlights:
A TASTE OF GEORGIA: WINE
Georgia's winemaking goes back some 8,000 years; it's considered one of the richest – but least known – wine regions in the world. What’s unique about winemaking in Georgia is the use of organic grapes aged in huge earthenware vessels, called 'qvevri,' which are buried in the earth until they ripen into wonderfully full-bodied wines – with no intervention in the fermentation process.
To me, there's no better place to taste these very unique organic wines than in the Kakheti region of Georgia; my favorite place is the tiny town of Signagi, at the Pheasant's Tears Restaurant and Winery.
A TASTE OF GEORGIA: CUISINE
In Georgia, where there's wine, there's also feasting. Foods are rich, and complex, fresh, and flavored with a medley of spices. It's all shown off at abundant feasts known as a 'supra,' or the "Georgian Table." Over several hours, dozens of dishes are piled high on the table - and your wine glass is never empty, with frequent toasts given by the ‘tamada’ or toastmaster of the evening.
Some of my favorite foods include 'khachapuri,' Georgia's famous cheese pie; little dumplings called 'khinkali;' the salty cheese varieties that are made in every region of the country – and my absolute favorite – the bread baked in clay ovens.
A TASTE OF GEORGIA: CULTURE
Beyond its fine wines and food, there's much to see and do in Georgia. Some of my favorite places are the old town of the capital, Tbilisi – with the balcony architecture the city is known for.
I love the watchtowers of Svaneti – where a distinctive way of life in this mountain region has been preserved for centuries.
My latest favorite is the tiny Phoka nunnery, in a village of the same name in Southern Georgia, where nuns make their own absolutely fantastic chocolates and cheese.
Georgia's architecture and landscapes are bold and impressive: from the Caucasus mountains to the Black Sea coast, with monasteries, fortresses, vineyards and cave towns in between.
CONCLUSION
Georgia encompasses the best of the best that a country can offer in my opinion – and at MIR, we're thrilled that our tour, "A Taste of Georgia: Wine, Cuisine & Culture" is such a wonderful opportunity to experience the living traditions of Georgia through its chefs, winemakers, artisans and musicians.

Episode 8 - Georgia - Tbilisi / 365 days off - Travel around the world
TBILISI After a pretty chaotic trip with a crazy Mashrutka from Mestia, we arrived in one piece in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. We were quite anxious to discover the city, especially after a week in the nature and the mountains. Tbilisi is big and small at the same time. It is easy to get around, to go groceries shopping or to eat at any time. We used all kind of public transportation, buses, metro, cable car or funicular. We even went to watch the latest XMen movie, in 3D. We rented a flat, which turned out to be as big as our own in Switzerland and for a very convenient price. After a pretty chaotic trip with a crazy Mashrutka from Mestia, we arrived in one piece in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. We were quite anxious to discover the city, especially after a week in the nature and the mountains. Tbilisi is big and small at the same time. It is easy to get around, to go groceries shopping or to eat at any time. We used all kind of public transportation, buses, metro, cable car or funicular. We even went to watch the latest XMen movie, in 3D. We rented a flat, which turned out to be as big as our own in Switzerland and for a very convenient price. Everything was so easy that we are now almost convinced that it will be difficult finding such a nice place in the next 10 months again.
During our stay, we took a walking tour given by Anna. During the tour, we learned quite a few fun facts about Georgia that you will not find in a regular guide book:
If you happen to be too drunk to drive, the police encourages you to call them. They will pick you up and bring you back home safely.
In 2009, the country was suffering of a drop of its population. To improve the birth rate, the Georgian Patriarch (Georgian equivalent of the Pope) offered to become the godfather of all third born child.
If you do not remember how a particular Georgian guy is named, just call him Giorgi. You have one chance over four to be right! We did experiment it: the car renter, the flat renter and the guide from Batumi were all called Giorgi. The same happens for women with Nino. The reason for that is to be found in the religion: Giorgi and Nino are the most iconic Saints of Georgia.
WE DID SPECIFICALLY ENJOY:
- The brand new Thai take away located in front of Rustaveli metro station.
- A very nice evening talking about motorbikes and travels with Sofie and Jo currently on their way to Mongolia by motorbike
- The dry bridge flea market, a must to see old artefacts from the Soviet period (with various portraits of Staline)
- The market stalls in Didube, we had our cheapest (although delicious) lunch there. One pizza, one spinach kachaphuri and one chocolate cake for about 2.50 dollars.
ACCOMMODATION
Airbnb flat on Rustaveli Avenue. It felt quite good to have a place on our own for a week.
RESTAURANTS
Home made pastas and salads by Magali (almost every evening since we had a kitchen).
Pervak restaurant where we ended up at 11pm, desperate for food. It was a pretty good choice.

Although Georgia still isn't very well known as a destination for a vacation, holiday or city trip, tourism is on the rise because of the country's climate, topography, rich culture, breath taking nature and various cities. Tourism is an increasingly significant part of the Georgian economy. Georgia offers about 103 resorts in different climatic zone. Tourist attractions include more than 12,000 historical and cultural monuments and over 1800 mineral springs. The Bagrati Cathedral in Kutaisi and Gelati Monastery, historical monuments of Mtskheta, and Upper Svaneti are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Georgia is also an international transport corridor through Batumi and Poti ports. Tblisi airport provides air connections to many European and non-European cities.

The low-lying outskirts of the city mainly have an agricultural landscape. The city centre has many gardens. Georgia is a country in the Caucasus region. The country is located between Western Asia and Eastern Europe, on the west Georgia is bounded by the Black Sea, to north by Russia, to the south by Turkey and Armenia, and to the southeast by Azerbaijan. The capital and largest city is Tbilisi.
Although Georgia still isn't very well known as a destination for a vacation, holiday or city trip, tourism is on the rise because of the country's climate, topography, rich culture, breath taking nature and various cities. Tourism is an increasingly significant part of the Georgian economy. Georgia offers about 103 resorts in different climatic zone. Tourist attractions include more than 12,000 historical and cultural monuments and over 1800 mineral springs. The Bagrati Cathedral in Kutaisi and Gelati Monastery, historical monuments of Mtskheta, and Upper Svaneti are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Georgia is also an international transport corridor through Batumi and Poti ports. Tblisi airport provides air connections to many European and non-European cities.
