Existen diversas teorías acerca del origen de la palabra Campeche (maya: Can Pech, 'serpiente y garrapata' )?.
Una interpretación más de los términos Can Pech o Serpiente-Garrapata es como "el lugar donde se adoraba a la boa". (La boa es un reptil que acepta como parásito a la garrapata y en los monumentos mayas de este sitio los españoles encontraron serpientes enormes).
Otros, indican que Campeche se deriva de las palabras Kin (maya: Kin, 'sol' )? que significa sol y Pech como ya se indicó, garrapata. Algunos suponen que a este nombre (Kin Pech) se le puede agregar el prefijo Ah que quiere decir lugar y en conjunto diría "lugar del señor sol garrapata".
Otra teoría se basa en la terminología anterior: Ah Kin Pech, pero con la aclaración de que Pech es el apellido de un sacerdote y supone que el significado es "lugar del Señor Pech adorador del Sol", por lo tanto el sacerdote maya Pech pudo haber fundado ó vivido en Can Pech.
Algunos investigadores más, explican que la traducción literal no sirve para entender la cosmovisión maya, sino en el sentido metafórico. Es por eso que Campeche, más que "lugar de serpientes y garrapatas", como se traduce en lengua maya, significa "Dios y Sacerdotes". Se entiende de la siguiente manera: Can significa serpiente, que en la cosmovisión maya sería Dios; respecto al vocablo Pech o Peche, que en lenguaje literal maya es garrapata (s), en el significado de la escancia maya es sacerdote. Campeche was founded in 1540 by Spanish conquistadores as San Francisco de Campeche atop the pre-existing Maya city of Canpech or Kimpech. Originally, the Spaniards lived inside the walled city, while the natives lived in the surrounding barrios of San Francisco, Guadalupe and San Román.
These barrios still retain their original churches.

Campeche (
kamˈpetʃe ), officially Free and Sovereign State of Campeche (Spanish: Estado Libre y Soberano de Campeche), is one of the 31 states which, with the Federal District, comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico. Located in Southeast Mexico, it is bordered by the states of Tabasco to the south west, Yucatán to the north east, and Quintana Roo to the east, and to the southeast by the Orange Walk district of Belize, and the Petén department of Guatemala to the south. It has a coastline to the west with the Gulf of Mexico. The state capital, also called Campeche, was declared a World Heritage Site in 1997. The formation of the state began with the city, which was founded in 1540 as the Spanish began the conquest of the Yucatán Peninsula. During the colonial period, the city was a rich and important port, but declined after Mexico’s Independence. Campeche was part of the province of Yucatán but split off in the mid-19th century, mostly due to political friction with city of Mérida. Today, much of the state’s economic comeback is due to the finding of petroleum offshore in the 1970s, which has made the coastal cities of Campeche and Ciudad del Carmen important economic centers. The state has important Mayan and colonial sites but they are not as well known or visited as others in the Yucatán.

Campeche City is the capital of the state. It has maintained its original stroke from the 16th century, and it has carefully conserved their inherited architectural style from the colonial times. The 1st of December of 1999, Campeche was declared by the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Spanish settlement took place in October 4, 1540 where Francisco de Montejo sailed from Cuba to the Yucatan Peninsula under the name of San Francisco de Campeche. Its privileged location was recognized by the privateers and pirates. Campeche City is the capital of the state. It has maintained its original stroke from the 16th century, and it has carefully conserved their inherited architectural style from the colonial times.
The 1st of December of 1999, Campeche was declared by the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Spanish settlement took place in October 4, 1540 where Francisco de Montejo sailed from Cuba to the Yucatan Peninsula under the name of San Francisco de Campeche.
Its privileged location was recognized by the privateers and pirates. In 1557 a group of ships attacked for the first time the "Costa de la villa", place were the piracy movement originated and the controlled activities mainly by France, England and Holland who were quarreling over the control of the new word. Many fights took place during this period with famous pirates like Sir Francis Drake and William Parker. This lead the Spanish crown to seriously reconsider the construction of a new safeguarding system.
In the middle of the 18th century the piracy movement slowly decreased, consequently a possible invasion from England lead to the reinforcement of costal defenses.
Now days the City of Campeche has three types of Architectural styles: civilian, religious and military. Fortunately most of this heritage has been well preserved through time. This has lead to greater appreciation and rediscovery of the City, its past, and its architecture, transforming the town into an attractive cultural destination with a great touristic potential.
The great cultural and natural richness of the town empowers it to have an internationally known gastronomy, Mayan and Spanish inherited plates represent one of our main attractions combined with the beauty of the sea and the country side.

Best Beaches of Florianopolis:
Campeche Beach - One of the widest and longest stretching beaches in Florianopolis.
Joaquina Beach - Famous for its big sand dunes and surfing breaks, Joaquina has long been the most popular beach in Floripa.
Mole Beach - In recent years, Mole beach is taking over Joaquina's thrown as the ultimate hot spot for the young, cool crowd. Come here to surf or hangout and stay for the beautiful women of Floripa!
Jureré / Jureré Internacional - This part of the island is dedicated to the rich and famous. Huge homes, beautiful beach and lots of money to go around. There is also a really cool fort close to Jureré Internacional that you should check out while you're in the area.
Santinho Beach - Off the beaten path and a little bit of a task getting there, Santinho is a great spot to escape the crowds. Although there's a big resort on one end of the beach, if you time it right you'll have more than enough space to enjoy the beauty of rolling green hills crashing down into the ocean.
Lagoinha do Leste - Absolute paradise. As you saw from the video, it takes a little while to get there, but that makes it all the better. Come during high season and you'll have to share the space with surfers... a small price to pay for perfection.
