In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives.
The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor.
Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time.
But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.
VICE News embedded with Iraq’s Golden Division Special Forces unit as they fought their way into the villages surrounding the city of Hit, where they encountered ambushes, sniper fire, and tried to sort suspected Islamic State operatives and sympathizers from innocent Iraqi civilians.

Has World War 3 Begun Already?!
As of Saturday, October 8th, 2016, Russia has deployed what is being deemed as "nuclear-capable Iskander missiles" in Kaliningrad — which is a Russian enclave situated between Poland and Lithuania. Although this is an alleged "military drill," America and NATO are saying otherwise.
In fact, NATO members are gearing up for any "surprise situation" that could occur due to the war games at play. Poland's Defense Minister, Antoni Macierewicz, described Moscow's actions as "very alarming." Linas Linkevicius, foreign minister of Lithuania, made this statement at a Vilnius news briefing: "The deployment not only increases tensions in the region, but also possibly violates international treaties which limit deployment of ballistic missiles of range of over 500 kilometers... This is a usual Russian tactic: escalate tensions, create a discord and then expect concessions elsewhere. I would like to hope that this will not work this time." As a response, NATO is boosting its eastern flank by deploying four battalions in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia as of next year.
But what's even more disturbing is the major warning from the U.S. Army: that future war with Russia or China would be "extremely lethal and fast."
Or, as some mainstream reports are dubbing it: "WORLD WAR 3."
Couple that with Russia's recent preparation drills — in which 40 MILLION Russians participated in civil defense drills, emergency readiness programs, natural disaster preparation, and disaster responses — and something definitely BIGGER is brewing.

Latvia is a democratic parliamentary republic established in 1918. The capital city is Riga, the European Capital of Culture 2014. Latvian is the official language. Latvia is a unitary state, divided into 118 administrative divisions, of which 109 are municipalities and 9 are cities.
Latvians and Livs are the indigenous people of Latvia.Latvian is an Indo-European language; it and Lithuanian are the only two surviving Baltic languages. Despite foreign rule from the 13th to 20th centuries, the Latvian nation maintained its identity throughout the generations via the language and musical traditions. Latvia and Estonia share a long common history. As a consequence of the Soviet occupation, both countries are home to a large number of ethnic Russians (26.9% in Latvia and 25.5% in Estonia), some of whom are non-citizens. Latvia is historically predominantly Protestant Lutheran, except for the Latgale region in the southeast, which has historically been predominantly Roman Catholic.

As of Saturday, October 8th, 2016, Russia has deployed what is being deemed as "nuclear-capable Iskander missiles" in Kaliningrad — which is a Russian enclave situated between Poland and Lithuania. Although this is an alleged "military drill," America and NATO are saying otherwise.
In fact, NATO members are gearing up for any "surprise situation" that could occur due to the war games at play. Poland's Defense Minister, Antoni Macierewicz, described Moscow's actions as "very alarming." Linas Linkevicius, foreign minister of Lithuania, made this statement at a Vilnius news briefing: "The deployment not only increases tensions in the region, but also possibly violates international treaties which limit deployment of ballistic missiles of range of over 500 kilometers... This is a usual Russian tactic: escalate tensions, create a discord and then expect concessions elsewhere. I would like to hope that this will not work this time." As a response, NATO is boosting its eastern flank by deploying four battalions in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia as of next year.
But what's even more disturbing is the major warning from the U.S. Army: that future war with Russia or China would be "extremely lethal and fast."
Or, as some mainstream reports are dubbing it: "WORLD WAR 3."
Couple that with Russia's recent preparation drills — in which 40 MILLION Russians participated in civil defense drills, emergency readiness programs, natural disaster preparation, and disaster responses — and something definitely BIGGER is brewing.

Linas Linkevicius, foreign minister of Lithuania, made this statement at a Vilnius news briefing: "The deployment not only increases tensions in the region, but also possibly violates international treaties which limit deployment of ballistic missiles of range of over 500 kilometers... This is a usual Russian tactic: escalate tensions, create a discord and then expect concessions elsewhere. I would like to hope that this will not work this time." As a response, NATO is boosting its eastern flank by deploying four battalions in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia as of next year.
But what's even more disturbing is the major warning from the U.S. Army: that future war with Russia or China would be "extremely lethal and fast."
Or, as some mainstream reports are dubbing it: "WORLD WAR 3."
Couple that with Russia's recent preparation drills — in which 40 MILLION Russians participated in civil defense drills, emergency readiness programs, natural disaster preparation, and disaster responses — and something definitely BIGGER is brewing.

Two years ago, Latvia was on the brink of bankruptcy. The government obtained loans from the International Monetary Fund and the European Union, and in return had to undertake drastic financial cuts. Now the Latvian economy is on the upswing again.Times have been tough in Latvia. Wages and pensions were slashed, and schools let go half of their teaching staff. Now the painful measures are starting to pay off. Unemployment is still at 20 percent and investment remains low, but Riga is optimistic that the Latvian economy will return to growth in the second half of 2010. Some Latvians cite the years under Soviet rule, when the nation was forced to learn great patience and fortitude, as one of the reasons they were able to stay the course.

Five years after the expansion into the east,the euphoria has somewhat dissipated,even among the erstwhile ideal candidates. Just a year ago,Latvians could proudly point to double-digit economic growth. Nowhere else did salaries rise faster - the politicians in Riga wanted to be at the forefront of achieving prosperity. Now things are going down steeply,the Latvian economy is sinking by at least 12 per cent. An unemployment rate of 20 per cent is expected. However, the economy is taking off again, and growth is expected to reach 4 to 5 percent next year. This is in part thanks to a business boom in recent years.
Twenty-eight year old Gintz Ziverts is one of Latvia's success stories.
After spending ten years in South-East Asia and Thailand, he decided to open Latvia's first Thai restaurant.
It was an instant success.
Today, Gintz employs seven people and makes twice as much as he had expected. He is thinking of opening up other Thai restaurants in Riga.
"I was living in Bangkok, and I saw all the food and thought that this type of food and this way of living were missing in Latvia," says Gintz.
"So I got the idea of opening a Thai restaurant in Latvia, simple food at simple prices, accessible to everyone. But it was new in Latvia, and this was a bit difficult to explain to investors."
But in the end, Gintz did manage to convince investors.
He got a 65.000 euro loan as well as 10.000 euros in subsidies. It was part of a European Social Fund partnership programme called New Start, aimed at helping 25-40 year olds set up their own businesses.
The programme also provided Gintz with an accounts training course.
"Through this course in accounting, I learnt how to manage my funds," says Gintz.
"I learnt how to hire workers in Latvia, and the law behind all of it, how to do things, and what the downside can be."
The European Social Fund is the European Union's main instrument for supporting employment in member states, especially those suffering heavily from the crisis.
Introduced in Latvia in 2009, the New Start programme has made a real difference for young entrepreneurs.
"Under the New Start program, Latvia has created 700 new businesses and 1,300 new jobs," says Inna Steinbuka, head of representation at the European Commission. "This is very impressive."
Gintz has this advice for anyone thinking of setting up their own business:
"The main keys to success are : first, the idea. Second, hard work. And third, getting the funding. To get the funding, you must make your idea attractive for the investors."

Two years ago, Latvia was on the brink of bankruptcy. The government obtained loans from the International Monetary Fund and the European Union, and in return had to undertake drastic financial cuts. Now the Latvian economy is on the upswing again.Times have been tough in Latvia. Wages and pensions were slashed, and schools let go half of their teaching staff. Now the painful measures are starting to pay off. Unemployment is still at 20 percent and investment remains low, but Riga is optimistic that the Latvian economy will return to growth in the second half of 2010. Some Latvians cite the years under Soviet rule, when the nation was forced to learn great patience and fortitude, as one of the reasons they were able to stay the course.

But the euro's tarnished image is one reason why opinion polls show around half of Latvians didn't want to adopt it.
Reasons given included fear of losing sovereignty and having to support other eurozone countries if there were a new crisis, as well as worries that prices would go up.
The euro adoption follows years of harsh austerity after Latvia suffered the EU's worst recession.
It is now arguably in a better state than much of the rest of the bloc, with economic growth this year forecast by the European Commission to be 4.1 percent compared with the eurozone's 1.1 percent.
Unemployment in Latvia is set to be 10.3 percent of the workforce in 2014, with the eurozone average predicted to be 12.2 percent.
Latvia joined as the single currency bloc marked its 15th anniversary, and the euro is now used by 333 million Europeans.
But the neighbouring Baltic state of Lithuania is the only remaining EU
country showing much enthusiasm for euro admission. It is due to join in 2015.
Other former Soviet bloc nations such as Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary are reticent about currency union.
Within Latvia, businesses are keener that the general population because they expect borrowing costs to be lower and investment to increase. They also see export opportunities within a eurozone that is showing signs of recovery.

Five years after the expansion into the east,the euphoria has somewhat dissipated,even among the erstwhile ideal candidates. Just a year ago,Latvians could proudly point to double-digit economic growth. Nowhere else did salaries rise faster - the politicians in Riga wanted to be at the forefront of achieving prosperity. Now things are going down steeply,the Latvian economy is sinking by at least 12 per cent. An unemployment rate of 20 per cent is expected. Many civil servants such as police officers or teachers can only look on as their salaries are drastically cut. In Latvia,the crisis is even affecting children. A number of schools had to be closed.

The culture of Europe is as diverse as the people and regions of the continent. However, all European countries have the same cultural roots and share common values such as freedom and justice, often gained through arduous historical processes. In addition, the universal language of the arts which have developed in Europe from antiquity to modern times is understood everywhere on the continent.
The annual CULTURAL DAYS of the European Central Bank (ECB) focus on culture as the foundations of the "European house", as well as on the different forms it takes in the individual Member States of the European Union (EU). Each year, a different country showcases itself in Frankfurt am Main using outstanding representatives of its culture.
In 2013 Latvia is the guest of the city in which the ECB is based. From 16 October to 15 November, this Baltic State, which joined the EU in 2004, will be in the spotlight with music (ranging from the classical orchestral concert to the "indie pop" event), readings, film screenings, an unusual theatre project, exhibitions focusing on the visual arts, architecture and photography, lectures, as well as a special programme for children.
The history of this country that was subject to foreign rule for centuries and of its capital Riga, a cosmopolitan melting pot with a lively German and Jewish culture around 1900, is reflected in these events and also in the current social situation of Latvia, an independent state since 1991. The innovative use of artistic tradition, which is essential for the national identity, and openness to international contemporary forms of expression equally characterise present Latvian cultural life.

Latvian amber was known in places as far away as Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In the 12th century, German traders arrived, bringing with them missionaries who attempted to convert the pagan Finno-Ugric and Baltic tribes to the Christian faith. The Germans founded Rīga in 1201, establishing it as the largest and most powerful city on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. After independence in 1918, Latvia achieved considerable results in social development, economy, industry and agriculture. It has always been a multicultural melting point, where foreigners and locals worked together and brought prosperity to the country. On June 16, 1940, Vyacheslav Molotov presented the Latvian representative in Moscow with an ultimatum accusing Latvia of violations of that pact, and on June 17 Soviet forces occupied the country. Elections for a "People's Saeima" were held, and a puppet government headed by Augusts Kirhenšteins led Latvia into the USSR. The annexation was formalized on August 5, 1940. During the time of the Iron Curtain, Latvia was a province of the Soviet Union, but the concentration of heavy industry was enormous. Contacts with the West were regulated. The Baltic region had the reputation of being the most urbanized and having the highest literacy rate in the Soviet Union. Latvia gained independence on September 6, 1991. Between 1991 and 2007 the country saw unprecedented economic growth. However, the global recession and the banking crisis hit Latvia brutally, and severe economic contraction and destructively high unemployment have returned.
Because of a tribal past and divisions between occupying nations, there are regional differences between parts of Latvia which are interesting to explore.

I traveled to Riga for only 4 days and managed to see and do a lot in that short given timeframe. Riga is the largest city of the Baltics and offers a lot of cool things to do in Riga itself but also just a short train ride out of the center in Sigulda.
This video showcases the combination of a city trip and and action packed day out in the nature. My personal highlight has been the flight in the vertical wind tunnel "Aerodium" near Sigulda - if you feel like you can even go Bungee Jumping there.

The fast-paced 5-minute video was produced by "Style masters studio" and presented to the Latvian media and diplomatic corps by Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks during a special preview presentation at the Berg Hotel on October 23rd. The musical video will be publicly available for viewing and down-loading on the LI web-site on October 27, 2006.
The video was created for use by government governmental institutions, state agencies, embassies and nongovernmental organizations in conjunction with conferences, exhibits and other international events. Directed by Ivo Kalpenieks, the video expands on Latvia's tourism slogan "The Land that Sings" by conveying the sights and sounds of Latvian nature, business and tourism. Riga's familiar Jugenstil architecture comes to life as the distinctive stone faces introduce each segment of the video.
