Yokohama
Yokohama (横浜市, Yokohama-shi) (
listen ), officially the City of Yokohama, is the second largest city in Japan by population after Tokyo, and most populous municipality of Japan. It is the capital city of Kanagawa Prefecture. It lies on Tokyo Bay, south of Tokyo, in the Kantō region of the main island of Honshu. It is a major commercial hub of the Greater Tokyo Area.
Yokohama's population of 3.7 million makes it Japan's largest incorporated city. Yokohama developed rapidly as Japan's prominent port city following the end of Japan's relative isolation in the mid-19th century, and is today one of its major ports along with Kobe, Osaka, Nagoya, Hakata, Tokyo, and Chiba.
History
Opening of the Treaty Port (1859–1868)
Yokohama was a small fishing village up to the end of the feudal Edo period, when Japan held a policy of national seclusion, having little contact with foreigners. A major turning point in Japanese history happened in 1853–54, when Commodore Matthew Perry arrived just south of Yokohama with a fleet of American warships, demanding that Japan open several ports for commerce, and the Tokugawa shogunate agreed by signing the Treaty of Peace and Amity.

Visit Yokohama. Japan's City by the Bay
Straight off the train at Yokohama Station we start our journey on the the Sea Bass ferry which will take us to Yamashita Park. At the park we will go up for a birds eye view of the city from the observation deck of the Marine Tower. From there I will check out the science and technology exhibits at the Mitsubishi Industrial Museum while Cynthia visits the bustling streets of Chinatown. We will meet back up for lunch at the historic themed Ramen Museum and after sampling the many noodle dishes we will split up to do some shopping. A travel guide for visiting the city of Yokohama, in Japan. Yokohama is Japan's largest city with 3.7M people. Just a short 30-minute train ride from Tokyo, Yokohama is an easy day trip. In this video I cover the major highlights of Yokohama that you can visit in a day-trip to Yokohama. After arriving at Yokohama station, I stop at the Tourist Information booth at the JR Yokohama Station to pick-up english maps. Then I head out the west exit to the Yokohama Station shopping district. On the West side of Yokohama station there are a great selection of stores including Yodobashi Camera, Japan's largest Electronics Store, Tokyu Hands Creative Life Store (my favorite store in Japan for cool gadgets), and Takashimaya department store.
I then head out to the Yokohama Station East exit to take a ride on the Sea Bass. The Sea Bass is a pedestrian ferry of sorts that goes between Yokohama Station, and Yamashita Park, with intermediate stops at Minato Mirai and the Red Brick Buildings. The Sea Bass has a direct route to Yamashita park that takes about 20 minutes, or an indirect route that makes those two intermediate stops which takes about 35 minutes.
Yamashita Park is a neat waterfront park with a nice wide pedestrian sidewalk along the harbor. Yamashita Park often hosts special events on weekends. The weekend that I visited Yamashita Park it was hosting an international food festival.
Chinatown is about a 5 minute walk from Yamashita Park... Check out my other video linked below for more info on Yokohama Chinatown.
Then I took the subway from Chinatown to the Minato Mirai district. The Minato Mirai district is Yokohama's newest district with some futuristic looking highrises including the Landmark Tower, Japan's tallest office building. The Landmark tower is also home to Japan's fastest elevators. Minato Mirai is best visited at night to see the colorful light displays on the Ferris wheel.
Yokohama is also home to a couple of note-worthy "museums" that I didn't visit in this video but at worth a mention. 1: Cup Noodle Museum (where you can make your own cup noodle). 2: Ramen Museum (more of a food-court with a whole bunch of ramen shops)

The Minato Mirai district is Yokohama's newest district with some futuristic looking highrises including the Landmark Tower, Japan's tallest office building. The Landmark tower is also home to Japan's fastest elevators. Minato Mirai is best visited at night to see the colorful light displays on the Ferris wheel.
Yokohama is also home to a couple of note-worthy "museums" that I didn't visit in this video but at worth a mention. 1: Cup Noodle Museum (where you can make your own cup noodle). 2: Ramen Museum (more of a food-court with a whole bunch of ramen shops)

Straight off the train at Yokohama Station we start our journey on the the Sea Bass ferry which will take us to Yamashita Park.
At the park we will go up for a birds eye view of the city from the observation deck of the Marine Tower.
From there I will check out the science and technology exhibits at the Mitsubishi Industrial Museum while Cynthia visits the bustling streets of Chinatown.
We will meet back up for lunch at the historic themed Ramen Museum and after sampling the many noodle dishes we will split up to do some shopping.
Our final stop is Cosmo World, home to one of the largest ferris wheels in the world.

The result of Hara Nobutaro's lifelong obsession with trains, this superb collection of model trains and other railway-associated memorabilia is every kid's and trainspotter's dream come true. Even if you don't care much for trains the sheer scale of the collection and beautiful detail of the exhibits is captivating. The highlight is the mammoth gauge one diorama of moving locomotives where you can act as train driver.

Always wanted to go to China? Yokohama's Chinatown has the sights, sounds, aromas of Hong Kong without the airfare, rivalling Minato Mirai in popularity. Within its 10 elaborately painted gates are all manner of Chinese specialty stores and some 500 food shops and (often expensive) restaurants and enchanting neon displays at night. Chinatown's heart is the Chinese temple Kantei-byō (admission free;;10:00-20:00), dedicated to Kanwu, the god of business.

Opened to the public in 1906, this beautifully landscaped garden features walking paths among ponds, 17th-century buildings, several fine tea-ceremony houses and a 500-year-old, three-storey pagoda. The inner garden is a fine example of traditional Japanese garden landscaping. From Yokohama or Sakuragi-chō Station, take bus 8 to Honmoku Sankei-en-mae bus stop (10 minutes).

Definitely a must visit if you're in Yokohama, this is also an easy day-trip from Tokyo.
In this video I start on Yokohama's main pedestrian street, a super busy street of Chinese restaurants and Souvenir shops. Panda related merchandise is particularly popular :). I talk about Chinatown's Chinese Entrance gates... there are a few of these entrance gates scattered around Chinatown -- which makes the neighborhood really easy to find. The Yokohama Business district often has special events, the special event when we were there was to celebrate Taiwan, and they had a number of groups doing the "Lion Dance", banging drums, and lighting off firecracks. Each lion would go in to a different store or restaurant to ward off the evil spirits.
Yokohama Chinatown is great for Dim-Sum. We stopped in to Manchiro Tenshimpo for their 12 course Dim-Sum set. Dim-sum is a cool experience in Japan, because they serve it "Japanese Style" -- on course at a time. If Dim-Sum isn't your thing, walk around and check out all the plastic food in the store windows. Really easy to pick something you like when you can see the food. It's the first time I've seen a plastic Peking Duck!

Took a little trip from Tokyo to Yokohama (approx 30 mins) and went to the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum.
The Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum has been running since 1994 and is the world's first food-themed amusement park!
The museum, takes you back to the year 1958, when the worlds first instant ramen was invented and let's you enjoy the atmosphere of the showa period in Japan.

The Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum has been running since 1994 and is the world's first food-themed amusement park!
The museum, takes you back to the year 1958, when the worlds first instant ramen was invented and let's you enjoy the atmosphere of the showa period in Japan.
