Roger William Corman (born April 5, 1926) is an American independent film producer, director and actor. He has been called The Pope of Pop Cinema, and is known as a trail blazer in the world of independent film. Much of Corman's work has an established critical reputation, such as his cycle of low budget cult films adapted from the tales of Edgar Allan Poe. Admired by members of the French New Wave and Cahiers du cinéma, in 1964 Corman was the youngest filmmaker to have a retrospective at the Cinémathèque Française, as well as the British Film Institute and the Museum of Modern Art. In 2009, he was awarded an Honorary Academy Award.
Corman mentored and gave a start to many young film directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese and James Cameron. He helped launch the careers of actors Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson.
Corman has occasionally taken minor acting roles in the films of directors who started with him, including The Silence of the Lambs, The Godfather Part II, Apollo 13, The Manchurian Candidate and Philadelphia. A documentary about Corman's life and career entitled Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel premiered at Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals in 2011, directed by Alex Stapleton. The film's TV rights were picked up by A&E IndieFilms after a well-received screening at Sundance.

Michael Moore sits down with this year’s Michigan Filmmaker honoree, the legendary Roger Corman, for candid conversation about a storied life in the movies. The King of the “B-movie,” the prolific master of a 400+ movie empire, the man who single-handedly defined genre films, the person responsible for bringing great auteurs like Truffaut, Fellini, and Kurasawa to US audiences, and the recipient of an honorary Oscar for his many remarkable contributions to the cinema, Corman appears live on the City Opera House stage for this rare visit to his home state.
Roger Corman rejects the moniker "King of B Movies", preferring instead to be thought of as the most fiscally responsible producer working today. He shot the original "Little Shop of Horrors" in just 2 days. He is recognized for his stellar track record of giving that first 'big break' to future film superstars--- such as directors Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and James Cameron; and actors like Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Robert De Niro. Corman is credited with producing nearly 400 films, including Death Race 2000, Frankenstein Unbound & Sharktopus. On this episode of InnerVIEWS..., Ernie's conversation with Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Roger Corman
Director Roger Corman discusses his Edgar Allan Poe adaptations, including The Pit and the Pendulum and The Masque of the Red Death.

Initially following in his father's footsteps, Corman studied engineering at Stanford University, but while in school he began to lose interest in the profession, and developed a growing interest in filmmaking.
