Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower, talks exclusively to the Guardian. The 31-year-old former intelligence analyst discusses whether he is a Russian spy, his likely fate if he returns to the US, and the relevance of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four in the age of Google.
"If I end up in chains in Guantanamo, I can live with that", Snowden confides to Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger in Moscow. During a seven hour interview, the former security analyst urges lawyers, journalists, doctors, accountants, priests, and others with a duty to protect confidentiality to upgrade security in the wake of the spy surveillance revelations. "What last year's revelations showed us was irrefutable evidence that unencrypted communications on the internet are no longer safe", he says. In addition to his plea, Snowden offers rare glimpses into his daily life in Russia, and makes startling claims about the culture of the NSA. The computer specialist is wanted by the US under the Espionage Act after leaking tens of thousands of top secret documents, and has given only a handful of interviews since seeking temporary asylum in Russia a year ago.

Crib Goch, Snowdon was the destination for a personal challenge for me to complete. Scared of heights all my life, I wanted to push my boundaries and set myself a meaningful challenge on my 31st Birthday. I came across video's like you on youtube and thought perfect - Crib Goch it is, it looks spectacular. As you can see from the video I got stage fright, but I completed the Crib Goch route which I'm really proud of - even if I looked like a wimp! Challenge yourself!

I wanted to test some new routes on Snowdon for when I lead guided adventures around there. Eva flew in to the UK specifically to be my test subject. We did a bit of swimming in Llyn Llidaw, the coldest lake in Britain, and climbed Gribin Ridge (something I'd not done before) before wild camping on the other side of Snowdon. The next day we experienced Snowdon summit at its busiest and quickly got the hell away from the crowds by heading back down via Crib Goch and its North ridge.

Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, is 1085m at its summit and has some of the best views in the UK which are reached using several well used paths. This was a walk we made up to the summit from Pen-y-Pass using the Pyg Track to ascend and the Miner's Track to come back down. We went up on the 25th May 2012 starting at about 9am, and got to the top at about 12.15pm. Weather was absolutely fantastic, no clouds, and the views were outstanding. However, I did get eaten alive by the midges which were crowding around the people at the summit. Will definitely be back to Snowdonia and Snowdon.

Snowdon
Snowdon (Welsh: Yr Wyddfa, pronounced [əɾ ˈwɨ̞ðva]) is the highest mountain in Wales, at an elevation of 1,085 metres (3,560 ft) above sea level, and the highest point in the British Isles outside the Scottish Highlands. It is located in Snowdonia National Park (Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri) in Gwynedd, and has been described as "probably the busiest mountain in Britain". It is designated as a national nature reserve for its rare flora and fauna.
The rocks that form Snowdon were produced by volcanoes in the Ordovician period, and the massif has been extensively sculpted by glaciation, forming the pyramidal peak of Snowdon and the arêtes of Crib Goch and Y Lliwedd. The cliff faces on Snowdon, including Clogwyn Du'r Arddu, are significant for rock climbing, and the mountain was used by Edmund Hillary in training for the 1953 ascent of Mount Everest.
The summit can be reached by a number of well-known paths, and by the Snowdon Mountain Railway, a rack and pinion railway opened in 1896 which carries passengers the 4.7 miles (7.6 km) from Llanberis to the summit station. The summit also houses a cafe called Hafod Eryri, open only when the railway is operating and built in 2006 to replace one built in the 1930s. The railway generally operates to the summit station from Whitsun to October. The daily running schedule depends on weather and customer demand.

Stuck on Crib Goch, Snowdon
Crib Goch, Snowdon was the destination for a personal challenge for me to complete. Scared of heights all my life, I wanted to push my boundaries and set myself a meaningful challenge on my 31st Birthday. I came across video's like you on youtube and thought perfect - Crib Goch it is, it looks spectacular. As you can see from the video I got stage fright, but I completed the Crib Goch route which I'm really proud of - even if I looked like a wimp! Challenge yourself! Crib Goch, Snowdon, Snowdonia.

25 Hours On Snowdon - Llyn Llidaw, Gribin Ridge, Crib Goch, North Ridge

Eva flew in to the UK specifically to be my test subject. We did a bit of swimming in Llyn Llidaw, the coldest lake in Britain, and climbed Gribin Ridge (something I'd not done before) before wild camping on the other side of Snowdon. The next day we experienced Snowdon summit at its busiest and quickly got the hell away from the crowds by heading back down via Crib Goch and its North ridge.

Snowdon Walk - Pyg Track / Miner's Track - Snowdonia
Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, is 1085m at its summit and has some of the best views in the UK which are reached using several well used paths. This was a walk we made up to the summit from Pen-y-Pass using the Pyg Track to ascend and the Miner's Track to come back down. We went up on the 25th May 2012 starting at about 9am, and got to the top at about 12.15pm. Weather was absolutely fantastic, no clouds, and the views were outstanding. However, I did get eaten alive by the midges which were crowding around the people at the summit. Will definitely be back to Snowdonia and Snowdon. Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower, talks exclusively to the Guardian. The 31-year-old former intelligence analyst discusses whether he is a Russian spy, his likely fate if he returns to the US, and the relevance of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four in the age of Google.
"If I end up in chains in Guantanamo, I can live with that", Snowden confides to Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger in Moscow. During a seven hour interview, the former security analyst urges lawyers, journalists, doctors, accountants, priests, and others with a duty to protect confidentiality to upgrade security in the wake of the spy surveillance revelations. "What last year's revelations showed us was irrefutable evidence that unencrypted communications on the internet are no longer safe", he says. In addition to his plea, Snowden offers rare glimpses into his daily life in Russia, and makes startling claims about the culture of the NSA. The computer specialist is wanted by the US under the Espionage Act after leaking tens of thousands of top secret documents, and has given only a handful of interviews since seeking temporary asylum in Russia a year ago.

We went up on the 25th May 2012 starting at about 9am, and got to the top at about 12.15pm. Weather was absolutely fantastic, no clouds, and the views were outstanding. However, I did get eaten alive by the midges which were crowding around the people at the summit. Will definitely be back to Snowdonia and Snowdon.
