Description
Instantly reach the people in your life—for free. Messenger is just like texting, but you don't have to pay for every message (it works with your data plan).
Not just for Facebook friends: Message people in your phone book and just enter a phone number to add a new contact.
Group chats: Create groups for the people you message most. Name them, set group photos and keep them all in one place.
Photos and videos: Shoot videos and snap selfies or other photos right from the app and send them with one tap.
Free calls: Talk as long as you want, even with people in other countries. (Calls are free over Wi-Fi. Otherwise, standard data charges apply.)
Even more ways to message:
Bring your conversations to life with stickers.
Preview your camera roll photos and videos without leaving the conversation--then choose the perfect ones to send.
Record voice messages when you have more to say.
Extra features:
Know when people have seen your messages.
Forward messages or photos to people who weren't in the conversation.
Search for people and groups to quickly get back to them.
Turn on location to let people know when you're nearby.
See who's available on Messenger and who's active on Facebook.
Turn off notifications when you're working, sleeping or just need a break.
Stay logged in so you never miss a message.
Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. Messenger uses location data to make features work, help people connect and more.

New update*
I'm a fan. Always have been. The latest update however is my least favorite. It immediately presumes anyone with the app is mid live stream or a YouTube/Facebook pseudo celebrity and draws away from some of the more simple straightforward elements that the previous incarnations of the app had. Messenger has made taking and posting video/pictures/status updates the predominant function of the app, when being able to interact/contact/ and send pictures/videos, silly emoticons, or third party links to friends and family across the county, country, or even across the globe was once it's primary and most effective tool. I still use the app. It of course still performs its original tasks and makes staying in touch regularly, especially during holidays, free and more or less instantly available, it's really just the user interface and its new apparent primary function that leaves me feeling less enthusiastic about using it. When I swipe down it's not because I want to take a picture or video, it's because I'm done with the application. Thanks, regards.

More Annoying than before
* UPDATE *
Each update is now bringing more new features that are interesting to persons under 10 years old. Can they provide an option to switch all the cruft off. Also there are long standing bugs that have probably been forgotten in place of the 'toy' features for brats. The send Apple News link to Messenger, has never worked. Sometimes notifications are unreliable.😩
This is what needs improvement, not flashing lights & colours.
{Australian perspective}
Pros:
~Messaging status is very informative. Read or delivered, etc.
~ Attractive emoji set which is optional to use. They look hand drawn & retro.
~ Facebook is the most popular social network, so contacts are easy to find or match.
~ Access to chat bots.
~ Stickers, GIF's
Cons:
~ Notifications are unreliable. Sometimes you don't hear the sound or see anything on the lock screen.
~ Updates are too large. 120MB every fortnight. Multiply that by all the devices you have. Details off what gets updated is missing as well.
~ Messenger emoji set is smaller than Apple's set.
~ It's not easy to switch between emoji sets in the same thread. Something I like to do. What you see is not what the recipient gets.
~ Most chat bots are not useful. In the early stage, they're toys.
~ Waiting for Facebook M bot assistant to be released. Google Allo already has 'Google Assistant'.
~ Get rid of 'My day'. It's for 10 year olds.
PLEASE READ THIS!!
So I hate messanger but this isn't a rant about it! It's for your safety! So I already knew messenger was a creep because when i would audio call my bf on my laptop, the camera light would be on.. so I figured that it probably does that on every call, even on the phone app, so I don't use it as much, only to talk to family from far places. Last night, I was sleeping like I was gone, but my boyfriend said he woke up at 3 just to see us on a call for 4 minutes! He hung up after 6 minutes! I never heard my phone ring so I obviously couldn't have answered! None of this makes sense! Even if he did call me, I wouldn't have answered! How was it on a call?? Please be careful what you do on messenger! This is creepy! The 5 star rating is so you guys can see it!
