How to look fresh-faced in the midst of Christmas party mayhem

By Stephanie Darling

The party season is in full swing. As it gets busier, and the nights become later, and those mojitos drinking rounds go on too long, let's face it, you're not looking as perky as you were at the start of December.

It's a marathon people, not a sprint. Here are some tips to keeping up appearances.

Miranda Kerr is popular on Instagram but you don't have to be a celebrity to make money from the platform - you just need the right "brand".

Moisturise I know, state the bleeding obvious. But if your skin isn't cleansed, exfoliated and hydrated nothing else will go on smoothly. Apply your favourite moisturiser (complete with inbuilt self tan) while your skin is still damp from showering for best results. This will have a double whammy effect of hydrating your face while adding a soft tinted glow.

Lighten up Skin that is caked in makeup is a surefire way to create tired-looking skin. Go light on coverage and use a medium-coverage tinted moisturiser. If you suffer from dark under eye circles, blemishes or redness, dot a tiny bit of concealer on the inner corners of your eyes and on any trouble spots.

Application Your skin should look like skin. A damp sponge is the best base applicator and we swear by BeautyBlender. Put a spot of foundation or tinted moisturiser on the back of your hand, dab the tip in and apply in a stippling motion to your face, working from the centre of your face out. This will give you sheer coverage. Wear yellow-based foundation as it is very warming to the skin, and the warmer your skin looks the fresher it looks. This applies to all skin tones.

Lengthening mascara with a thin wand will be lighter on lashes while still creating intensity. Try Lancôme Definiciles High Definition Mascara.

Brow-beaters Use a pencil that's a shade lighter than your natural hair colour to give your brows definition. Create soft hair-like strokes to give fuller-looking brows.

Eyes wide Use an eye shadow primer to keep your eye shadow in its place and wear brown eye liner rather than black as it's a subtler, softer option.

Warm lipstick shades Nude shades with a hint of rose or peach will brighten up your lips. Try Tom Ford Lip Colour in Pink Dust. Place a dab on cheeks and blend for an instant two-in-one pick-me-up.
