A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
Capitol Reef National Park is a United States National Park, in south-central Utah. It is 100 miles (160 km) long but fairly narrow. The park, established in 1971, preserves 241,904 acres (377.98 sq mi; 97,895.08 ha; 978.95 km2) and is open all year, although May through September are the most popular months.
Called "Wayne Wonderland" in the 1920s by local boosters Ephraim P. Pectol and Joseph S. Hickman, Capitol Reef National Park protects colorful canyons, ridges, buttes, and monoliths. About 75 mi (121 km) of the long up-thrust called the Waterpocket Fold, a rugged spine extending from Thousand Lake Mountain to Lake Powell, is preserved within the park. "Capitol Reef" is the name of an especially rugged and spectacular segment of the Waterpocket Fold near the Fremont River. The area was named for a line of white domes and cliffs of Navajo Sandstone, each of which looks somewhat like the United States Capitol building, that run from the Fremont River to Pleasant Creek on the Waterpocket Fold. The local word reef refers to any rocky barrier to travel. Easy road access only came in 1962, with the construction of State Route 24 through the Fremont River Canyon.

The full loop from Holt Draw. A 3 day backpacking trip in Capitol Reef National Park. Route can be found here: http://caltopo.com/map?id=1N0N . I started at Holt Draw, and dropped into Upper Spring Canyon. I camped the first night about a mile before the Chimney Rock Canyon junction. The second day I hiked all the way down the canyon, crossing the Freemont River. I then walked the highway south to Grand Wash, and hiked west to the Frying Pan Trail. I camped the second night not to far past Cassidy Arch. Day 3 I hiked down to the visitor center, and then up the Sulphur Creek route. I took this all the way outside the park boundary, and back to my vehicle at Hold Draw. Fun trip. April, 2014

Capitol Reef National Park is one of Utahʻs Mighty Five national parks. It is certainly the least known of Utahʻs national park jewels, but it is a geological giant in terms of the scale of itʻs features. National Park ranger Cindy Micheli gives us a four-minute overview of a park that is so big and remote you can spend months exploring and barely scratch the surface. This is the heart of the Canyon Country - red rock cliffs and giant geological formations like the Waterpocket Fold, Strike Valley, the Capitol Dome for which the park is named, and the historic Morman town of Fruita. Sulphur Creek is a great hike in Capitol Reef National Park in Utah. This video will show you how to do it and show you how much fun it was when my family did it in the summer of 2013. It is a point to point hike, all downhill, mostly in water, through red rock canyons with plenty of swimming and shade.
Capitol Reef National Park is the hidden jewel of Utahʻs Mighty Five national parks. Lesser known and less visited than Bryce, Zion, Arches and Canyonlands, it is one of Americaʻs most spectacular geological destinations! Hope you enjoy the music video! Finley-Holiday Films DM-611
