A short 4 hour drive from Greenville, South Carolina is the beautiful, historic city of Charleston, one of the first colonial cities of the thirteen colonies. After arriving late on a Friday night, we had some drinks, partied up for a fresh day around the city. Saturday morning we took a nice carriage tour around the hot spots of the city, walked around to check out some artifacts, the waterfront, and have lunch. Tight on time we set off for Folly Beach to not only take a dip in the water but see for our own eye the Morris Island lighthouse, a lighthouse sitting out several yards at sea. Returning to Charleston, we grabbed dinner and bar hopped for more drinks, one places uniquely being a former church turned bar.
Sunday morning we had a quick bite for brunch and walked around the battery to see some dolphins pop up out of the harbor. From there we caught a ferry to the Civil War fort, Fort Sumter which sits at the end of the harbor. This is the very fort that began the Civil War firing the first shot. After returning to the port we quickly grabbed lunch and crossed the beautiful Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and headed back to Greenville. This was my first time to Charleston, and I am sure it will not be my last time. :)

After living in Charleston for 6 years, here are a few of my favorite things to do for locals and tourists alike.
6) Pick a Beach: Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, or Sullivans Island. Charleston has some of the best beaches in the country!
5) Visit a County Park - Both Palmetto Island County Park and James Island County Parks are affordable ways to spend the day walking or biking the nature trails and checking out the beautiful South Carolina marshland!
4) Eat Some Soulfood - Charleston is known for its amazing restaurants, but don't be deterred by the smaller joints around town like Martha Lou's Kitchen and Bertha's Kitchen. They have some of the best fried chicken and lowcountry cuisine I've ever had!
3) Walk with Ghosts - Charleston is known as one of the most haunted cities in America. Check out one of the many tour companies like Bulldog Tours and learn about the city's spooky past and darkest stories.
2) Tour the Market - If you only have one day in Charleston, definitely start at Market Street. You can walk through the various shops set up by local venders and are only a short walk away from Charleston's most famous sights like Waterfront Park, Rainbow Row, White Point Gardens, and The Battery.
1 - Try a Praline Sample - You'll likely hear the familiar shouts from a Market Street Sweets candy maker luring you in to try "FREE PRALINE SAMPLES!" And trust me, it's worth the stop each and every time. Pralines are an amazing southern treat, especially when baked fresh.

Something I've known for years.
One of the best ways to learn about Charleston's past is to take a tour.
And one of the fun ways to tour the city.... is in a horse drawn carriage.
That's exactly what I did on a recent visit.
As Kevin, supplied the.... uh horsepower, our knowledgable guide entertained and informed us with many interesting tidbits regarding Charleston's rich history, a city whose beginning dates back more than a hundred years before the founding of America.
Add in the picture perfect weather we enjoyed, and you've got the recipe for an experience that's hard to beat.
If exercise is more your style, one of the many walking tours may better suit your needs.
Charleston's downtown business and residential districts are compact and perfect for a relaxed and entertaining walk as you appreciate the history and beauty all around you.
At some point in your visit, you'll probably find yourself meandering through City Market, as will most of Charleston's 4 million annual visitors.
This Charleston landmark has been around since the 1790's.
Today from among the hundreds of local vendors, you can find just the right item to purchase and keep as a souvenir or to give as that special gift.
The city of Charleston proper boasts 90 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with another 96 in the remaining parts of the county.
As you witness the variety of these restored treasures, you'll appreciate why Charleston was considered the cultural center of the antebellum South.
Since we're talking historical homes, make sure you stroll along East Battery street toward White Point Garden.
You'll enjoy the beauty of the magnificent row of stately antebellum homes that line the street to your right as Charleston harbor splashes against the battery seawall on which you walk.
Charleston's visitors also enjoy the city by water. There are numerous Harbor tours where one can get a better sense of Charleston's skyline, and with an evening cruise, enjoy a beautiful sunset as well.
Another harbor treat is to view the Ravenel bridge up close and personal. This Charleston landmark doesn't have the history that attracts so many to the Holy City, having been completed less than a decade ago, but it makes up for its newcomer status by its sheer size, spanning two and a half miles in length, and rising to the majestic height of 575 feet.
This 8 lane engineering marvel connects downtown Charleston to Mt Pleasant,
and one day a year, 40 thousand runners use it for their own personal highway in what's known as the Cooper River Bridge Run.
And who could visit Charleston and not take the boat to Fort Sumter, the scene of the first battle of the war between the States.
After a 30 minute narrated cruise, you'll step foot on the very soil where America's most bloody war began.
Once on site National Park Service Rangers will provide more details of this regrettable episode in our nation's history.
Charleston is also known for its Plantations.
You'd be hard pressed to fully understand what makes downtown Charleston what it is without visiting and learning more about the role played by these historic and massive plantations.
And while we're out and about, this is the perfect time for me to tell you that there are no less than 5 beaches within 25 miles of Charleston.
Whether your accommodations are on the beach, or you simply come to spend a peaceful sun drenched day, it's the perfect complement to your downtown Charleston adventure.
Did I hear someone say shopping?
Just so you know, King street was recently chosen as one of the 10 best shopping streets in the United States.
Whether its antiques, art, or fashion, you'll find it all.. I say... shop on!
All this activity will surely make you hungry enough to eat a horse...... oops..... sorry Kevin, my bad......
whether its fine dinning or various other award winning eateries, from barbecue to bistro, from cafe to cafeteria, from tavern to tearoom, and others too numerous to list, Charleston has it all.
Then when daylight turns to darkness, you'll have to take a break from your non stop Charleston adventure.
Charleston's travelers have access to some of the most elegant accommodations.
Whether you're looking for historic charm, a private hideaway, or unparalleled luxury, your nights in Charleston will be as perfect as your days.
Budget conscious families also have many alternatives from which to choose.

South Carolina 
i/ˌsaʊθ kærəˈlaɪnə/ is a state in the southeastern region of the United States. The state is bordered to the north by North Carolina, to the south and west by Georgia across the Savannah River, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean.
The Province of South Carolina became a slave society after rice and indigo became established as commodity crops. From 1708, a majority of the population were slaves, many born in Africa.
South Carolina was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation and the eighth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution on May 23, 1788. South Carolina became the first state to vote to secede from the Union on December 20, 1860. After the American Civil War, it was readmitted into the United States on June 25, 1868.
South Carolina is the 40th most extensive and the 23rd most populous U.S. state. Its GDP as of 2013 was $183.6 billion, with an annual growth rate of 3.13%. South Carolina comprises 46 counties. The capital and largest city is Columbia with a 2013 population of 133,358; the Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin metropolitan area had a 2013 population of 850,965.

Something I've known for years. One of the best ways to learn about Charleston's past is to take a tour. And one of the fun ways to tour the city.... is in a horse drawn carriage. That's exactly what I did on a recent visit. As Kevin, supplied the.... uh horsepower, our knowledgable guide entertained and informed us with many interesting tidbits regarding Charleston's rich history, a city whose beginning dates back more than a hundred years before the founding of America. Add in the picture perfect weather we enjoyed, and you've got the recipe for an experience that's hard to beat. If exercise is more your style, one of the many walking tours may better suit your needs. Charleston's downtown business and residential districts are compact and perfect for a relaxed and entertaining walk as you appreciate the history and beauty all around you. At some point in your visit, you'll probably find yourself meandering through City Market, as will most of Charleston's 4 million annual visitors. This Charleston landmark has been around since the 1790's. Today from among the hundreds of local vendors, you can find just the right item to purchase and keep as a souvenir or to give as that special gift. The city of Charleston proper boasts 90 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with another 96 in the remaining parts of the county. As you witness the variety of these restored treasures, you'll appreciate why Charleston was considered the cultural center of the antebellum South. Since we're talking historical homes, make sure you stroll along East Battery street toward White Point Garden. You'll enjoy the beauty of the magnificent row of stately antebellum homes that line the street to your right as Charleston harbor splashes against the battery seawall on which you walk. Charleston's visitors also enjoy the city by water. There are numerous Harbor tours where one can get a better sense of Charleston's skyline, and with an evening cruise, enjoy a beautiful sunset as well. Another harbor treat is to view the Ravenel bridge up close and personal. This Charleston landmark doesn't have the history that attracts so many to the Holy City, having been completed less than a decade ago, but it makes up for its newcomer status by its sheer size, spanning two and a half miles in length, and rising to the majestic height of 575 feet. This 8 lane engineering marvel connects downtown Charleston to Mt Pleasant, and one day a year, 40 thousand runners use it for their own personal highway in what's known as the Cooper River Bridge Run. And who could visit Charleston and not take the boat to Fort Sumter, the scene of the first battle of the war between the States. After a 30 minute narrated cruise, you'll step foot on the very soil where America's most bloody war began. Once on site National Park Service Rangers will provide more details of this regrettable episode in our nation's history. Charleston is also known for its Plantations. You'd be hard pressed to fully understand what makes downtown Charleston what it is without visiting and learning more about the role played by these historic and massive plantations. And while we're out and about, this is the perfect time for me to tell you that there are no less than 5 beaches within 25 miles of Charleston. Whether your accommodations are on the beach, or you simply come to spend a peaceful sun drenched day, it's the perfect complement to your downtown Charleston adventure. Did I hear someone say shopping? Just so you know, King street was recently chosen as one of the 10 best shopping streets in the United States. Whether its antiques, art, or fashion, you'll find it all.. I say... shop on! All this activity will surely make you hungry enough to eat a horse...... oops..... sorry Kevin, my bad...... whether its fine dinning or various other award winning eateries, from barbecue to bistro, from cafe to cafeteria, from tavern to tearoom, and others too numerous to list, Charleston has it all. Then when daylight turns to darkness, you'll have to take a break from your non stop Charleston adventure. Charleston's travelers have access to some of the most elegant accommodations. Whether you're looking for historic charm, a private hideaway, or unparalleled luxury, your nights in Charleston will be as perfect as your days. Budget conscious families also have many alternatives from which to choose. -

In June 2010 I finished work in Washington, D.C. and started a five week motorcycle trip to California. Returning to Charleston, we grabbed dinner and bar hopped for more drinks, one places uniquely being a former church turned bar.
Sunday morning we had a quick bite for brunch and walked around the battery to see some dolphins pop up out of the harbor. From there we caught a ferry to the Civil War fort, Fort Sumter which sits at the end of the harbor. This is the very fort that began the Civil War firing the first shot. After returning to the port we quickly grabbed lunch and crossed the beautiful Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and headed back to Greenville. This was my first time to Charleston, and I am sure it will not be my last time. :)

A short 4 hour drive from Greenville, South Carolina is the beautiful, historic city of Charleston, one of the first colonial cities of the thirteen colonies. After arriving late on a Friday night, we had some drinks, partied up for a fresh day around the city. Saturday morning we took a nice carriage tour around the hot spots of the city, walked around to check out some artifacts, the waterfront, and have lunch. Tight on time we set off for Folly Beach to not only take a dip in the water but see for our own eye the Morris Island lighthouse, a lighthouse sitting out several yards at sea. 6) Pick a Beach: Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, or Sullivans Island. Charleston has some of the best beaches in the country!
5) Visit a County Park - Both Palmetto Island County Park and James Island County Parks are affordable ways to spend the day walking or biking the nature trails and checking out the beautiful South Carolina marshland!
4) Eat Some Soulfood - Charleston is known for its amazing restaurants, but don't be deterred by the smaller joints around town like Martha Lou's Kitchen and Bertha's Kitchen. They have some of the best fried chicken and lowcountry cuisine I've ever had!
3) Walk with Ghosts - Charleston is known as one of the most haunted cities in America. Check out one of the many tour companies like Bulldog Tours and learn about the city's spooky past and darkest stories.
2) Tour the Market - If you only have one day in Charleston, definitely start at Market Street. You can walk through the various shops set up by local venders and are only a short walk away from Charleston's most famous sights like Waterfront Park, Rainbow Row, White Point Gardens, and The Battery.
1 - Try a Praline Sample - You'll likely hear the familiar shouts from a Market Street Sweets candy maker luring you in to try "FREE PRALINE SAMPLES!" And trust me, it's worth the stop each and every time. Pralines are an amazing southern treat, especially when baked fresh.

In this short video you'll see Charleston come alive and you'll understand why one magazine recently voted it the number one tourist destination in all of America.
Something I've known for years.
One of the best ways to learn about Charleston's past is to take a tour.
And one of the fun ways to tour the city.... is in a horse drawn carriage.
That's exactly what I did on a recent visit.
As Kevin, supplied the.... uh horsepower, our knowledgable guide entertained and informed us with many interesting tidbits regarding Charleston's rich history, a city whose beginning dates back more than a hundred years before the founding of America.
Add in the picture perfect weather we enjoyed, and you've got the recipe for an experience that's hard to beat.
If exercise is more your style, one of the many walking tours may better suit your needs.
Charleston's downtown business and residential districts are compact and perfect for a relaxed and entertaining walk as you appreciate the history and beauty all around you.
At some point in your visit, you'll probably find yourself meandering through City Market, as will most of Charleston's 4 million annual visitors.
This Charleston landmark has been around since the 1790's.
Today from among the hundreds of local vendors, you can find just the right item to purchase and keep as a souvenir or to give as that special gift.
The city of Charleston proper boasts 90 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with another 96 in the remaining parts of the county.
As you witness the variety of these restored treasures, you'll appreciate why Charleston was considered the cultural center of the antebellum South.
Since we're talking historical homes, make sure you stroll along East Battery street toward White Point Garden.
You'll enjoy the beauty of the magnificent row of stately antebellum homes that line the street to your right as Charleston harbor splashes against the battery seawall on which you walk.
Charleston's visitors also enjoy the city by water. There are numerous Harbor tours where one can get a better sense of Charleston's skyline, and with an evening cruise, enjoy a beautiful sunset as well.
Another harbor treat is to view the Ravenel bridge up close and personal. This Charleston landmark doesn't have the history that attracts so many to the Holy City, having been completed less than a decade ago, but it makes up for its newcomer status by its sheer size, spanning two and a half miles in length, and rising to the majestic height of 575 feet.
This 8 lane engineering marvel connects downtown Charleston to Mt Pleasant,
and one day a year, 40 thousand runners use it for their own personal highway in what's known as the Cooper River Bridge Run.
And who could visit Charleston and not take the boat to Fort Sumter, the scene of the first battle of the war between the States.
After a 30 minute narrated cruise, you'll step foot on the very soil where America's most bloody war began.
Once on site National Park Service Rangers will provide more details of this regrettable episode in our nation's history.
Charleston is also known for its Plantations.
You'd be hard pressed to fully understand what makes downtown Charleston what it is without visiting and learning more about the role played by these historic and massive plantations.
And while we're out and about, this is the perfect time for me to tell you that there are no less than 5 beaches within 25 miles of Charleston.
Whether your accommodations are on the beach, or you simply come to spend a peaceful sun drenched day, it's the perfect complement to your downtown Charleston adventure.
Did I hear someone say shopping?
Just so you know, King street was recently chosen as one of the 10 best shopping streets in the United States.
Whether its antiques, art, or fashion, you'll find it all.. I say... shop on!
All this activity will surely make you hungry enough to eat a horse...... oops..... sorry Kevin, my bad......
whether its fine dinning or various other award winning eateries, from barbecue to bistro, from cafe to cafeteria, from tavern to tearoom, and others too numerous to list, Charleston has it all.

LOCAL AUTHOR AND ADVENTURER, CHARLIE WILKINS, HAS ROWED ACROSS THE ATLANTIC OCEAN
3194 miles to date and less than a 100 miles to go.
The boat is called The Big Blue and it was designed specifically to shave three days off the current world record. Their skipper is Angela Madsen, a 50 year old grandmother of three and the first paraplegic woman to row 3000 miles across the Atlantic and has broken numerous records since then. http://vimeo.com/18995549
The Roc Expedition crew is composed of 16 unique individuals from a 21 year old student from Guelph Ontario, to 69 year old Tom Butscher (former Canadian Ice skating champion) from Toronto Island who will become the oldest man to have rowed across the Atlantic. The team will not break the new record established by Sarah G earlier this month but they will accomplish plenty of firsts: the first Georgian, the first Australian woman, the first catamaran to cross the ocean unassisted, the largest group of Canadian ocean rowers and the first award winning writer, Thunder Bay’s Charlie Wilkins. There are 7 Canadian’s on board from: Thunder Bay, Toronto, Guelph, St. Joseph Island, and Montreal.
The crew assembled in Agadir, Morocco at the end of December and they have spent 48 tumultuous days aboard their boat, Big Blue. What began as a record breaking row will end as the ultimate test of human endurance and stamina. The crew was buffeted by strong winds and waves that sent them off course and made rowing sometimes impossible. Fortunately no major injuries were sustained and the boat, the first of its kind has withstood everything the ocean could muster. They have observed the rules of the international Ocean Rowing Society which means the boat can only be powered by rowers, no sails, and no support boat following them. Filmmaker Kelly Saxberg and Director of Photography Damien Gilbert are in Barbados documenting the voyage. This spirit of adventure was captured in March 2010 Doc Challenge film “Life is but a Dream” the only Canadian finalist of 12 to play at Hot Docs. Doc Challenge begins again 3rd march 2011 – the day the boat is slated to arrive in Barbados.
Meanwhile Dylan White, one of the young Canadian rowers on board, has documented the entire voyage. The boat was fully rigged with camera gear and sound equipment to be able to capture the story on the high seas.

she competed in the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, China. She is a 4 time World Championship Gold Medalist and a Level 3 Rowing Coach. She is now one of the First women to row across the Indian Ocean and the first disabled woman to row across 2 oceans.
Charles Wilkins has written sixteen books, including Walk to New York, about his 2,200-km hike from Thunder Bay to New York City, The Circus at the Edge of the
Earth, about his travels with the Great Wallenda Circus, and, most recently, In the Land of Long Fingernails: A Gravedigger’s Memoir, about the summer of 1969, during which he dug graves in a big corporate cemetery in the east end of Toronto.
SYLVAIN is a 46 year old emergency physician from Quebec, Canada.
He has completed 8 Ironmans, and started rowing in 2007. He will use the Expedition
to fund raise for an open source project in Health informatics, a project that, he believes, has the potential to help community of practice in medicine to collaborate in creating tools that will improve the quality, the efficiency and security of the care provided to their patients.
TOM lives on Toronto Island and was born in Zurich Switzerland. He raced bikes as an amateur and skated nationally and internationally for 8 years.
“I started rowing in 2000 and I have crossed Lake Ontario 5 times, then I rowed the length, 340 km I am being told I am the only rower to go across and back non-stop 100 k in 12 hours.”
DYLAN will use the row to fundraise in support of the empowerment and rights of Indigenous people all over the world. He completed a 8400km cycling trip in the summer of 2009, As the cinematographer on board, he will use HD cameras to document every step of the way.
STEVE is a 55 year old maple syrup producer (and physician) will row with his son Nigel on the voyage. “I grew up on Toronto Island and spent most of my childhood

ok wow its been a while (yet again).
this wedding was one of my first 2010 weddings (yet another one which prevented me from partying the weekend of my birthday *ROAR*) but nonetheless it was an incredible experience having met, befriended and worked with paulina + michael.
paulina is a romantic at heart and from the onset having met her i knew that their wedding story would be driven strongly by voiceovers and a more heartfelt and slower soundtrack.
this more traditional approach which most of my couples (or the industry for that matter) has been opting against these past few years; has almost become obsolete in the international circuit of wedding films.
but i find that by being challenged by a different style and approach, it forces and teaches one to be become a more flexible, discrete, yet refined storyteller.
one must have to look deeper into the day, the couples emotions and feelings vs relying on ridiculous cinematic destination wedding visuals to maintain audience interest.
and while it's impossible not to notice the bride (you too studly michael), the stunning paulina has been modeling for over 14 years, and is currently is represented by NEXT Toronto. You may have seen her face across international and domestic ads for buffalo jeans, coors light, le senza, jacob, dentine gum, winners, etc eTC ETC EC across north america to as far as japan, ny, taiwan spain etc etC ETC ETC. it was super kewl when talking to paulina as i do remember seeing her in the 7up super bowl commercial that played a few years back.
enough rambing; watch, inhale, learn, enjoy + cry as you wish.
TECHNICAL + PRODUCTION TIDBITS for my industry friends and colleagues.
shot with the freshest of the fresh socks out there, my polish brother and best friend konrad czyswtoski with help from the youngest film prodigy of all time; mark a klassen.
cameras used:
2 Canon 5dmkii's for most of the day
2 Canon 7ds for the ceremony bride and groom angles.
everything shot in 24p mode, unless I was running steadicam in some cases where I deliberately slowed things down to 30p -> 24p 80% for a more dreamlike look + feel for certain shots.
this wedding was shot before employing ultra flat low contrast and desaturated profiles for our 5d's. hence i reluctantly admit that color correcting this piece and matching 5ds+7ds was more of a pain in butt then usual; due to a more saturated and crushed images from the camera.
COLOR CORRECTION via combination of fcp rgb balance, 2-way + 3-way colour correcter + newbluefx + modified ancient mb filters.
i seem to be creating more and more custom profiles as I go along to accommodate different exposure/lighting situations that we sorely have to face in the world of event filmmaking.
i will be EXTENSIVEly ripping into and breaking down the topic of color correction at every workshop I teach this year. camera matching, defining what is a 'solid' image and how to achieve it; the WHY, WHY NOT, and equally importantly HOW and HOW ELSE will be addressed in painstaking + meticulous detail. I'll try to throw up a sample on thefilmfoundry twitter tonight.

STEADICAM; my Steadicam abilities (or lack off) performed the steadicam duties for the photosession on my trusty almost 3 year old (ALREADY) steadicam pilot.
this film is the revised sde, i'll be posting a the reactions from the couple for the sde on the wedding night in a day or two from now.

Cataloochee has an intriguing history. Here is a brief recount from Wiki:
Cataloochee consists of three narrow valleys running parallel to one another, and "walled in" by the high ridges of the Balsam Mountains. To the northwest is Sterling Ridge and to the southeast is Cataloochee Divide, both of which rise above 5,000 feet for considerable stretches. To the southwest is the 6,155-foot Big Cataloochee Mountain along the Balsam crest, which runs perpendicular to Sterling Ridge and Cataloochee Divide. Two lower ridges, Noland Mountain and Big Fork Ridge, run parallel between Sterling and the Divide, and split Cataloochee into the three valleys.
The northernmost of Cataloochee's three valleys is Little Cataloochee, which is situated along a stream of the same name between Sterling Ridge and Noland Mountain. Across Noland Mountain to the south is Big Cataloochee, the middle of the three valleys, which consists of fertile bottomland along Cataloochee Creek. The southernmost of the three valleys is Caldwell Fork, which is situated between Fork Ridge and the Cataloochee Divide. All three valleys lay along streams that are part of the Pigeon River watershed.
History
Historical marker recalling the Cataloochee Trail at the intersection of Jonathan Creek Rd. and Cove Creek Rd. near Maggie Valley
The name "Cataloochee" is derived from the Cherokee term Gadalutsi, which means "fringe standing erect." The name probably referred to the tall rows of trees along the ridges surrounding the valley.[1] The Cherokee used the valley primarily as a hunting ground. Early settlers recalled at least one Cherokee hunting camp in the vicinity of Little Cataloochee Creek.[2]
The Cataloochee Trail, which stretched from the Cove Creek area to what is now Cosby, Tennessee, connected the Cherokee Middlesettlements with the Overhill towns. The modern Cove Creek Road closely parallels this trail.[3] By the time the first European explorers and traders arrived, the trail had been worn a foot deep in some places. Bishop Francis Asbury used it to cross the mountains into Tennessee in 1810.
The Cherokee gave up their claims to Cataloochee when they signed the Treaty of Holston in 1791. Nevertheless, they continued to hunt and fish in the valley throughout the 19th century. Hattie Caldwell Davis, a descendant of Cataloochee's first Euro-American settlers, recalled that her ancestors spoke "fluent Cherokee," and were always on friendly terms with the natives. Since the early 19th century, Euro-Americans were using the grassy balds along the ridges surrounding Cataloochee to free range livestock. Crude temporary herding camps were in place by 1814, when Henry Colwell made the first land purchase.[5] In 1834, Henry's son, James Colwell (1797–1867) moved the family to Cataloochee. The spelling of "Colwell" was eventually changed to "Caldwell." The Caldwells were accompanied by the family of Young Bennett. Both families settled near the heart of Big Cataloochee, where their descendants would remain until the government forced them out in the 1930s.
George Palmer arrived in Cataloochee in 1838 and settled at the eastern end of Big Cataloochee. Family tradition recalls that Palmer had lost a fortune drinking and gambling in Waynesville and decided to move to Cataloochee to make a fresh start.[6] Like the Caldwells, the Palmers would remain in the valley until the arrival of the national park. A notable late arrival in Big Cataloochee was Jonathan Woody (1812–1894), who arrived shortly after the Civil War.
Caldwell Fork was probably named after John Caldwell, a grandson of the original settlers. John settled near the modern junction of the Caldwell Fork Trail and Big Fork Ridge Trail (the original road from Waynesville to Cataloochee passed through here), and a small community grew up around him. Prominent early settlers along Caldwell Fork include Sol Sutton, Elijah Messer (1844–1936), and Jesse McGee.[7]
In 1854, Jack Vess, a son-in-law of George Palmer, and Daniel Cook (1831–1908) became the first permanent settlers in Little Cataloochee, which is opposite Noland Mountain to the north of the main settlement. Cook's daughter Rachel married Will Messer (1870–1946), a son of Elijah. Will Messer would eventually become Cataloochee's wealthiest man.[8] Other notable early settlers in Little Cataloochee included William Noland and his son-in-law, Evan Hannah (1802–1878).

Cataloochee has an intriguing history. Here is a brief recount from Wiki:
Cataloochee consists of three narrow valleys running parallel to one another, and "walled in" by the high ridges of the Balsam Mountains. To the northwest is Sterling Ridge and to the southeast is Cataloochee Divide, both of which rise above 5,000 feet for considerable stretches. To the southwest is the 6,155-foot Big Cataloochee Mountain along the Balsam crest, which runs perpendicular to Sterling Ridge and Cataloochee Divide. Two lower ridges, Noland Mountain and Big Fork Ridge, run parallel between Sterling and the Divide, and split Cataloochee into the three valleys.
The northernmost of Cataloochee's three valleys is Little Cataloochee, which is situated along a stream of the same name between Sterling Ridge and Noland Mountain. Across Noland Mountain to the south is Big Cataloochee, the middle of the three valleys, which consists of fertile bottomland along Cataloochee Creek. The southernmost of the three valleys is Caldwell Fork, which is situated between Fork Ridge and the Cataloochee Divide. All three valleys lay along streams that are part of the Pigeon River watershed.
History

The name "Cataloochee" is derived from the Cherokee term Gadalutsi, which means "fringe standing erect." The name probably referred to the tall rows of trees along the ridges surrounding the valley.[1] The Cherokee used the valley primarily as a hunting ground. Early settlers recalled at least one Cherokee hunting camp in the vicinity of Little Cataloochee Creek.[2]
The Cataloochee Trail, which stretched from the Cove Creek area to what is now Cosby, Tennessee, connected the Cherokee Middlesettlements with the Overhill towns. The modern Cove Creek Road closely parallels this trail.[3] By the time the first European explorers and traders arrived, the trail had been worn a foot deep in some places. Bishop Francis Asbury used it to cross the mountains into Tennessee in 1810.
The Cherokee gave up their claims to Cataloochee when they signed the Treaty of Holston in 1791. Nevertheless, they continued to hunt and fish in the valley throughout the 19th century. Hattie Caldwell Davis, a descendant of Cataloochee's first Euro-American settlers, recalled that her ancestors spoke "fluent Cherokee," and were always on friendly terms with the natives. Pourquoi appeller ce site "GatsbyOnline", alors que le titre original, "The Great Gatsby", comporte un adjectif qualificatif assez clairement identifié ?
Si je voulais me démarquer en évitant l'épithète "magnifique", l'éventail des possibles était vaste: Le Grand Gatsby (littéral)..., L'Immense Gatsby (mégalo)..., Gatsby l'énorme (mode).., Gatsby le grandiose (lyrique)...,Le Fastueux Gatsby (littéraire)..., Gatsby le gigantesque (ampoulé)...

Parce qu'il est devenu célèbre très jeune et fréquentait des riches, parce qu'il incarne la génération perdue, parce que sa femme était la plus belle hystérique de New York, parce qu'il buvait trop et plongeait, en smoking ou en voiture, dans des piscines de la Côte d'Azur.
Parce qu'il voulait couper en deux un garçon de café pour faire rire Zelda.
Parce qu'il est un écrivain facile à lire, charmant et triste, dont les livres ne sont ni longs ni prétentieux.
Parce qu'il est mort jeune à Hollywood.
Parce qu'il a eu la présence d'esprit d'affirmer que "toute vie est bien entendu un processus de démolition" à la fin de la sienne.
Bref, on aime Francis Scott Fitzgerald parce qu'il est le premier romancier de l'ère spectaculaire : il s'est toute sa vie, qu'il l'admette ou non, arrangé pour faire coïncider sa vie et son œuvre..., il a fixé les nouvelles règles du jeu à l'époque médiatique : un écrivain, ce n'est plus quelqu'un qui se contente d'écrire des livres, c'est quelqu'un qui tente de réduire la distance entre sa personne et ses livres.
Ce qui n'est pas pareil du tout.
Depuis Fitzgerald (mais on pourrait aussi commencer cette phrase par "depuis Dumas" ou "depuis Hugo", dans le domaine de l'autopromotion, les Français n'ont de leçons à recevoir de personne), on a l'habitude de juger la qualité d'un auteur autant aux aspects publics de sa vie privée qu'à la singularité de son œuvre.
On sait tous en 2012 que Proust a perdu... et à plate couture, son combat contre Sainte-Beuve : plus aucun écrivain ne sera jugé exclusivement sur son texte.
Cette mauvaise nouvelle, on pourrait la baptiser "la faute à Fitzgerald", qui paradoxalement reste l'un des meilleurs stylistes en prose du XXe siècle, le plus fin, le plus imagé, le plus fragile aussi.
Il écrivait pour la même raison qu'il buvait : parce qu'il était trop sensible pour mener une vie normale.
Voilà pourquoi, quand on vous parle de Scott Fitzgerald, c'est toujours pour montrer des jolies photos en noir et blanc datant des Années folles, ou raconter des soirées où il dansait le charleston avec Dorothy Parker dans la fontaine d'Union Square, ou ses beuveries avec Hemingway au Dingo Bar, rue Delambre, à Paris, entre les deux guerres.
Fitzgerald s'endormait tous les soirs en appuyant sur son cœur pour qu'il cesse de battre.
Il y a du grandiose, du dramatique... et même du "Gatsbien", dans la vie de l'auteur de Gatsby le Magnifique.
Gatsby le Magnifique est un des rares romans qu'on a fini par savoir par cœur : par exemple, sa dernière phrase : "Car c'est ainsi que nous allons, barques luttant contre un courant qui nous ramène sans cesse vers le passé".

In June 2010 I finished work in Washington, D.C. and started a five week motorcycle trip to California. Camping, visiting friends, and staying in the occasional hotel, I rode my Suzuki V-Strom 6700 miles. A short 4 hour drive from Greenville, South Carolina is the beautiful, historic city of Charleston, one of the first colonial cities of the thirteen colonies. After arriving late on a Friday night, we had some drinks, partied up for a fresh day around the city. Saturday morning we took a nice carriage tour around the hot spots of the city, walked around to check out some artifacts, the waterfront, and have lunch. Tight on time we set off for Folly Beach to not only take a dip in the water but see for our own eye the Morris Island lighthouse, a lighthouse sitting out several yards at sea. Returning to Charleston, we grabbed dinner and bar hopped for more drinks, one places uniquely being a former church turned bar.
Sunday morning we had a quick bite for brunch and walked around the battery to see some dolphins pop up out of the harbor. From there we caught a ferry to the Civil War fort, Fort Sumter which sits at the end of the harbor. This is the very fort that began the Civil War firing the first shot. After returning to the port we quickly grabbed lunch and crossed the beautiful Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and headed back to Greenville. This was my first time to Charleston, and I am sure it will not be my last time. :)

3) Walk with Ghosts - Charleston is known as one of the most haunted cities in America. Check out one of the many tour companies like Bulldog Tours and learn about the city's spooky past and darkest stories.
2) Tour the Market - If you only have one day in Charleston, definitely start at Market Street. You can walk through the various shops set up by local venders and are only a short walk away from Charleston's most famous sights like Waterfront Park, Rainbow Row, White Point Gardens, and The Battery.
1 - Try a Praline Sample - You'll likely hear the familiar shouts from a Market Street Sweets candy maker luring you in to try "FREE PRALINE SAMPLES!" And trust me, it's worth the stop each and every time. Pralines are an amazing southern treat, especially when baked fresh.

Something I've known for years.
One of the best ways to learn about Charleston's past is to take a tour.
And one of the fun ways to tour the city.... is in a horse drawn carriage.
That's exactly what I did on a recent visit.
As Kevin, supplied the.... uh horsepower, our knowledgable guide entertained and informed us with many interesting tidbits regarding Charleston's rich history, a city whose beginning dates back more than a hundred years before the founding of America.
Add in the picture perfect weather we enjoyed, and you've got the recipe for an experience that's hard to beat.
If exercise is more your style, one of the many walking tours may better suit your needs.
Charleston's downtown business and residential districts are compact and perfect for a relaxed and entertaining walk as you appreciate the history and beauty all around you.
At some point in your visit, you'll probably find yourself meandering through City Market, as will most of Charleston's 4 million annual visitors.
This Charleston landmark has been around since the 1790's.
Today from among the hundreds of local vendors, you can find just the right item to purchase and keep as a souvenir or to give as that special gift.
The city of Charleston proper boasts 90 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with another 96 in the remaining parts of the county.
As you witness the variety of these restored treasures, you'll appreciate why Charleston was considered the cultural center of the antebellum South.
Since we're talking historical homes, make sure you stroll along East Battery street toward White Point Garden.
You'll enjoy the beauty of the magnificent row of stately antebellum homes that line the street to your right as Charleston harbor splashes against the battery seawall on which you walk.
Charleston's visitors also enjoy the city by water. There are numerous Harbor tours where one can get a better sense of Charleston's skyline, and with an evening cruise, enjoy a beautiful sunset as well.
Another harbor treat is to view the Ravenel bridge up close and personal. This Charleston landmark doesn't have the history that attracts so many to the Holy City, having been completed less than a decade ago, but it makes up for its newcomer status by its sheer size, spanning two and a half miles in length, and rising to the majestic height of 575 feet.
This 8 lane engineering marvel connects downtown Charleston to Mt Pleasant,
and one day a year, 40 thousand runners use it for their own personal highway in what's known as the Cooper River Bridge Run.
And who could visit Charleston and not take the boat to Fort Sumter, the scene of the first battle of the war between the States.
After a 30 minute narrated cruise, you'll step foot on the very soil where America's most bloody war began.
Once on site National Park Service Rangers will provide more details of this regrettable episode in our nation's history.
Charleston is also known for its Plantations.
You'd be hard pressed to fully understand what makes downtown Charleston what it is without visiting and learning more about the role played by these historic and massive plantations.
And while we're out and about, this is the perfect time for me to tell you that there are no less than 5 beaches within 25 miles of Charleston.
Whether your accommodations are on the beach, or you simply come to spend a peaceful sun drenched day, it's the perfect complement to your downtown Charleston adventure.
Did I hear someone say shopping?
Just so you know, King street was recently chosen as one of the 10 best shopping streets in the United States.
Whether its antiques, art, or fashion, you'll find it all.. I say... shop on!

Something I've known for years.
One of the best ways to learn about Charleston's past is to take a tour.
And one of the fun ways to tour the city.... is in a horse drawn carriage.
That's exactly what I did on a recent visit.
As Kevin, supplied the.... uh horsepower, our knowledgable guide entertained and informed us with many interesting tidbits regarding Charleston's rich history, a city whose beginning dates back more than a hundred years before the founding of America.
Add in the picture perfect weather we enjoyed, and you've got the recipe for an experience that's hard to beat.
If exercise is more your style, one of the many walking tours may better suit your needs.
Charleston's downtown business and residential districts are compact and perfect for a relaxed and entertaining walk as you appreciate the history and beauty all around you.
At some point in your visit, you'll probably find yourself meandering through City Market, as will most of Charleston's 4 million annual visitors.
This Charleston landmark has been around since the 1790's.
Today from among the hundreds of local vendors, you can find just the right item to purchase and keep as a souvenir or to give as that special gift.
The city of Charleston proper boasts 90 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with another 96 in the remaining parts of the county.
As you witness the variety of these restored treasures, you'll appreciate why Charleston was considered the cultural center of the antebellum South.
Since we're talking historical homes, make sure you stroll along East Battery street toward White Point Garden.
You'll enjoy the beauty of the magnificent row of stately antebellum homes that line the street to your right as Charleston harbor splashes against the battery seawall on which you walk.
Charleston's visitors also enjoy the city by water. There are numerous Harbor tours where one can get a better sense of Charleston's skyline, and with an evening cruise, enjoy a beautiful sunset as well.
Another harbor treat is to view the Ravenel bridge up close and personal. This Charleston landmark doesn't have the history that attracts so many to the Holy City, having been completed less than a decade ago, but it makes up for its newcomer status by its sheer size, spanning two and a half miles in length, and rising to the majestic height of 575 feet.
This 8 lane engineering marvel connects downtown Charleston to Mt Pleasant,
and one day a year, 40 thousand runners use it for their own personal highway in what's known as the Cooper River Bridge Run.
And who could visit Charleston and not take the boat to Fort Sumter, the scene of the first battle of the war between the States.
After a 30 minute narrated cruise, you'll step foot on the very soil where America's most bloody war began.
Once on site National Park Service Rangers will provide more details of this regrettable episode in our nation's history.
Charleston is also known for its Plantations.
You'd be hard pressed to fully understand what makes downtown Charleston what it is without visiting and learning more about the role played by these historic and massive plantations.
And while we're out and about, this is the perfect time for me to tell you that there are no less than 5 beaches within 25 miles of Charleston.
Whether your accommodations are on the beach, or you simply come to spend a peaceful sun drenched day, it's the perfect complement to your downtown Charleston adventure.

Just so you know, King street was recently chosen as one of the 10 best shopping streets in the United States.
Whether its antiques, art, or fashion, you'll find it all.. I say... shop on!

LOCAL AUTHOR AND ADVENTURER, CHARLIE WILKINS, HAS ROWED ACROSS THE ATLANTIC OCEAN
3194 miles to date and less than a 100 miles to go.
The boat is called The Big Blue and it was designed specifically to shave three days off the current world record. Their skipper is Angela Madsen, a 50 year old grandmother of three and the first paraplegic woman to row 3000 miles across the Atlantic and has broken numerous records since then. http://vimeo.com/18995549
The Roc Expedition crew is composed of 16 unique individuals from a 21 year old student from Guelph Ontario, to 69 year old Tom Butscher (former Canadian Ice skating champion) from Toronto Island who will become the oldest man to have rowed across the Atlantic. The team will not break the new record established by Sarah G earlier this month but they will accomplish plenty of firsts: the first Georgian, the first Australian woman, the first catamaran to cross the ocean unassisted, the largest group of Canadian ocean rowers and the first award winning writer, Thunder Bay’s Charlie Wilkins. There are 7 Canadian’s on board from: Thunder Bay, Toronto, Guelph, St. Joseph Island, and Montreal.
The crew assembled in Agadir, Morocco at the end of December and they have spent 48 tumultuous days aboard their boat, Big Blue. What began as a record breaking row will end as the ultimate test of human endurance and stamina. The crew was buffeted by strong winds and waves that sent them off course and made rowing sometimes impossible. Fortunately no major injuries were sustained and the boat, the first of its kind has withstood everything the ocean could muster. They have observed the rules of the international Ocean Rowing Society which means the boat can only be powered by rowers, no sails, and no support boat following them. Filmmaker Kelly Saxberg and Director of Photography Damien Gilbert are in Barbados documenting the voyage. This spirit of adventure was captured in March 2010 Doc Challenge film “Life is but a Dream” the only Canadian finalist of 12 to play at Hot Docs. Doc Challenge begins again 3rd march 2011 – the day the boat is slated to arrive in Barbados.
Meanwhile Dylan White, one of the young Canadian rowers on board, has documented the entire voyage. The boat was fully rigged with camera gear and sound equipment to be able to capture the story on the high seas.

she competed in the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, China. She is a 4 time World Championship Gold Medalist and a Level 3 Rowing Coach. She is now one of the First women to row across the Indian Ocean and the first disabled woman to row across 2 oceans.
Charles Wilkins has written sixteen books, including Walk to New York, about his 2,200-km hike from Thunder Bay to New York City, The Circus at the Edge of the
Earth, about his travels with the Great Wallenda Circus, and, most recently, In the Land of Long Fingernails: A Gravedigger’s Memoir, about the summer of 1969, during which he dug graves in a big corporate cemetery in the east end of Toronto.
SYLVAIN is a 46 year old emergency physician from Quebec, Canada.
He has completed 8 Ironmans, and started rowing in 2007. He will use the Expedition
to fund raise for an open source project in Health informatics, a project that, he believes, has the potential to help community of practice in medicine to collaborate in creating tools that will improve the quality, the efficiency and security of the care provided to their patients.
TOM lives on Toronto Island and was born in Zurich Switzerland. He raced bikes as an amateur and skated nationally and internationally for 8 years.
“I started rowing in 2000 and I have crossed Lake Ontario 5 times, then I rowed the length, 340 km I am being told I am the only rower to go across and back non-stop 100 k in 12 hours.”
DYLAN will use the row to fundraise in support of the empowerment and rights of Indigenous people all over the world. He completed a 8400km cycling trip in the summer of 2009, As the cinematographer on board, he will use HD cameras to document every step of the way.

ok wow its been a while (yet again).
this wedding was one of my first 2010 weddings (yet another one which prevented me from partying the weekend of my birthday *ROAR*) but nonetheless it was an incredible experience having met, befriended and worked with paulina + michael.
paulina is a romantic at heart and from the onset having met her i knew that their wedding story would be driven strongly by voiceovers and a more heartfelt and slower soundtrack.
this more traditional approach which most of my couples (or the industry for that matter) has been opting against these past few years; has almost become obsolete in the international circuit of wedding films.
but i find that by being challenged by a different style and approach, it forces and teaches one to be become a more flexible, discrete, yet refined storyteller.
one must have to look deeper into the day, the couples emotions and feelings vs relying on ridiculous cinematic destination wedding visuals to maintain audience interest.
and while it's impossible not to notice the bride (you too studly michael), the stunning paulina has been modeling for over 14 years, and is currently is represented by NEXT Toronto. You may have seen her face across international and domestic ads for buffalo jeans, coors light, le senza, jacob, dentine gum, winners, etc eTC ETC EC across north america to as far as japan, ny, taiwan spain etc etC ETC ETC. it was super kewl when talking to paulina as i do remember seeing her in the 7up super bowl commercial that played a few years back.

TECHNICAL + PRODUCTION TIDBITS for my industry friends and colleagues.
shot with the freshest of the fresh socks out there, my polish brother and best friend konrad czyswtoski with help from the youngest film prodigy of all time; mark a klassen.
cameras used:
2 Canon 5dmkii's for most of the day
2 Canon 7ds for the ceremony bride and groom angles.
everything shot in 24p mode, unless I was running steadicam in some cases where I deliberately slowed things down to 30p -> 24p 80% for a more dreamlike look + feel for certain shots.
this wedding was shot before employing ultra flat low contrast and desaturated profiles for our 5d's. hence i reluctantly admit that color correcting this piece and matching 5ds+7ds was more of a pain in butt then usual; due to a more saturated and crushed images from the camera.
COLOR CORRECTION via combination of fcp rgb balance, 2-way + 3-way colour correcter + newbluefx + modified ancient mb filters.
i seem to be creating more and more custom profiles as I go along to accommodate different exposure/lighting situations that we sorely have to face in the world of event filmmaking.
i will be EXTENSIVEly ripping into and breaking down the topic of color correction at every workshop I teach this year. camera matching, defining what is a 'solid' image and how to achieve it; the WHY, WHY NOT, and equally importantly HOW and HOW ELSE will be addressed in painstaking + meticulous detail. I'll try to throw up a sample on thefilmfoundry twitter tonight.

STABILIZATION tools were handled cinevate atlas 30, manfrotto monopod 561hdv (this is an INCREDIBLE tool) at the BEST price ($300), the 561 serves as a tripod, a fake slider, a fake crane, a fake car/boat mount etc etc etc. just use your imagination and the sky is the limit with this badboy.
STEADICAM; my Steadicam abilities (or lack off) performed the steadicam duties for the photosession on my trusty almost 3 year old (ALREADY) steadicam pilot.
this film is the revised sde, i'll be posting a the reactions from the couple for the sde on the wedding night in a day or two from now.

Cataloochee has an intriguing history. Here is a brief recount from Wiki:
Cataloochee consists of three narrow valleys running parallel to one another, and "walled in" by the high ridges of the Balsam Mountains. To the northwest is Sterling Ridge and to the southeast is Cataloochee Divide, both of which rise above 5,000 feet for considerable stretches. To the southwest is the 6,155-foot Big Cataloochee Mountain along the Balsam crest, which runs perpendicular to Sterling Ridge and Cataloochee Divide. Two lower ridges, Noland Mountain and Big Fork Ridge, run parallel between Sterling and the Divide, and split Cataloochee into the three valleys.
The northernmost of Cataloochee's three valleys is Little Cataloochee, which is situated along a stream of the same name between Sterling Ridge and Noland Mountain. Across Noland Mountain to the south is Big Cataloochee, the middle of the three valleys, which consists of fertile bottomland along Cataloochee Creek. The southernmost of the three valleys is Caldwell Fork, which is situated between Fork Ridge and the Cataloochee Divide. All three valleys lay along streams that are part of the Pigeon River watershed.

The name "Cataloochee" is derived from the Cherokee term Gadalutsi, which means "fringe standing erect." The name probably referred to the tall rows of trees along the ridges surrounding the valley.[1] The Cherokee used the valley primarily as a hunting ground. Early settlers recalled at least one Cherokee hunting camp in the vicinity of Little Cataloochee Creek.[2]
The Cataloochee Trail, which stretched from the Cove Creek area to what is now Cosby, Tennessee, connected the Cherokee Middlesettlements with the Overhill towns. The modern Cove Creek Road closely parallels this trail.[3] By the time the first European explorers and traders arrived, the trail had been worn a foot deep in some places. Bishop Francis Asbury used it to cross the mountains into Tennessee in 1810.
The Cherokee gave up their claims to Cataloochee when they signed the Treaty of Holston in 1791. Nevertheless, they continued to hunt and fish in the valley throughout the 19th century. Hattie Caldwell Davis, a descendant of Cataloochee's first Euro-American settlers, recalled that her ancestors spoke "fluent Cherokee," and were always on friendly terms with the natives. Davis' great-grandfather, Levi, is believed to have provided aide to Cherokees hiding in the forest during the Trail of Tears period.[4]

Since the early 19th century, Euro-Americans were using the grassy balds along the ridges surrounding Cataloochee to free range livestock. Crude temporary herding camps were in place by 1814, when Henry Colwell made the first land purchase.[5] In 1834, Henry's son, James Colwell (1797–1867) moved the family to Cataloochee. The spelling of "Colwell" was eventually changed to "Caldwell." The Caldwells were accompanied by the family of Young Bennett. Both families settled near the heart of Big Cataloochee, where their descendants would remain until the government forced them out in the 1930s.
George Palmer arrived in Cataloochee in 1838 and settled at the eastern end of Big Cataloochee. Family tradition recalls that Palmer had lost a fortune drinking and gambling in Waynesville and decided to move to Cataloochee to make a fresh start.[6] Like the Caldwells, the Palmers would remain in the valley until the arrival of the national park. A notable late arrival in Big Cataloochee was Jonathan Woody (1812–1894), who arrived shortly after the Civil War.
Caldwell Fork was probably named after John Caldwell, a grandson of the original settlers. John settled near the modern junction of the Caldwell Fork Trail and Big Fork Ridge Trail (the original road from Waynesville to Cataloochee passed through here), and a small community grew up around him. Prominent early settlers along Caldwell Fork include Sol Sutton, Elijah Messer (1844–1936), and Jesse McGee.[7]
In 1854, Jack Vess, a son-in-law of George Palmer, and Daniel Cook (1831–1908) became the first permanent settlers in Little Cataloochee, which is opposite Noland Mountain to the north of the main settlement. Cook's daughter Rachel married Will Messer (1870–1946), a son of Elijah. Will Messer would eventually become Cataloochee's wealthiest man.[8] Other notable early settlers in Little Cataloochee included William Noland and his son-in-law, Evan Hannah (1802–1878).

Depuis Fitzgerald (mais on pourrait aussi commencer cette phrase par "depuis Dumas" ou "depuis Hugo", dans le domaine de l'autopromotion, les Français n'ont de leçons à recevoir de personne), on a l'habitude de juger la qualité d'un auteur autant aux aspects publics de sa vie privée qu'à la singularité de son œuvre.
On sait tous en 2012 que Proust a perdu... et à plate couture, son combat contre Sainte-Beuve : plus aucun écrivain ne sera jugé exclusivement sur son texte.
Cette mauvaise nouvelle, on pourrait la baptiser "la faute à Fitzgerald", qui paradoxalement reste l'un des meilleurs stylistes en prose du XXe siècle, le plus fin, le plus imagé, le plus fragile aussi.
Il écrivait pour la même raison qu'il buvait : parce qu'il était trop sensible pour mener une vie normale.
Voilà pourquoi, quand on vous parle de Scott Fitzgerald, c'est toujours pour montrer des jolies photos en noir et blanc datant des Années folles, ou raconter des soirées où il dansait le charleston avec Dorothy Parker dans la fontaine d'Union Square, ou ses beuveries avec Hemingway au Dingo Bar, rue Delambre, à Paris, entre les deux guerres.

Parce qu'il est mort jeune à Hollywood.
Parce qu'il a eu la présence d'esprit d'affirmer que "toute vie est bien entendu un processus de démolition" à la fin de la sienne.
