Unusual shark encounter at St Kilda beach

Sophie Hunt was walking her dogs in St Kilda when she noticed a shark struggling to return to the ocean.

A Life Saving Victoria spokeswoman said Fairhaven beach would remain closed for the rest of the day. The sighting was the fifth reported along the Surf Coast on Tuesday.

A 2.5 metre shark was spotted at Jan Juc, directly in front of the surf life saving clubhouse, at 10.24am.

It forced the closure of Jan Juc and Torquay beaches.

Sarah Cameron was walking along Jan Juc beach when she heard the shark alarm sound.

"You could just see everyone coming in [from the water]," she told Channel Seven.

Both Jan Juc and Torquay were reopened to swimmers about two hours later.

Another shark sighting was reported at Eastern View, near Fairhaven, at 12.48pm.

Less than 30 minutes later, there was another reported sighting at Point Roadknight, near Anglesea, at 1.11pm.

Beachgoers are being urged to stay alert, swim between the red and yellow flags and never swim alone.

On Sunday, Elwood and St Kilda beaches were closed around midday after a 1.5-metre shark was spotted 150 metres off St Kilda marina just after 11am.

That night, a woman walking her dogs along St Kilda beach stumbled upon a shark that had washed ashore.

There were 20 reported shark sightings - most believed to be bronze whalers - along Victoria's Surf Coast on Monday.

The record number - boosted by warmer waters and bait schools swimming close to shore - shut down numerous beaches.
