Boy, 8, drowns in Lake Hume

An eight-year-old boy has drowned at Lake Hume, on the Victoria-NSW border.

The child disappeared near Ebden, 13 kilometres east of Wodonga, about 6.30pm on Tuesday.

He was removed from the water about 10 minutes later but paramedics were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Emergency services had been called to Bonegilla Road at Kookaburra Point, near Ebden.

The death is not being treated as suspicious. 

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Tributes flowed for the young boy online after the incident. 

It followed a string of recent near drownings in recent weeks and months. 

Nicholas Corboy, two, was pulled unconscious and not breathing from a Wangaratta pool last week and was revived. 

There have also been near drownings on the Murray River at Albury and in Wodonga, Everton and at Harrietville. 

A drunk and unconscious woman was dragged from Noreuil Park by a holidaymaker on Christmas Day after getting her leg stuck in a tree. 

Daniel Ward was dragged from the pool at the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre pool about a month earlier. 

Royal Life Saving Society Australia national manager aquatic risk Craig Roberts has spoken of the importance of supervision.
