Whakarewarewa (short for Te Whakarewarewatanga O Te Ope Taua A Wahiao) is home to the people of Tuhourangi Ngati Wahiao. Welcoming visitors since the early 1800's, the villagers' homes are built around geothermal pools (up to 120+ degrees Celsius), two of New Zealand's most active geysers (Pohutu and the Princes of Wales), hot springs and bubbling mud pools (80-90 degrees Celsius). Their steam cooking boxes (hangi meals) and skin conditioning and healing minerals of their geothermal bathing facilities must be among the world's most pure. The village caters well for tourists and includes traditional and modern Maori songs and dance by the local performing group Te Pakira.

The Māori village of Whakarewarewa, with its geysers, hot springs and bubbling mud pools, became a tourist attraction in the late 19th century. Whakarewarewa was known for its female guides -- Guide Maggie (Mākereti Papakura) later lived in the UK and studied anthropology at Oxford, and Guide Rangi (Rangitīaria Dennan) guided both the young Queen Elizabeth and US First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

Whakarewarewa (reduced version of Te Whakarewarewatanga O Te Ope Taua A Wahiao, meaning The gathering place for the war parties of Wahiao, often abbreviated to Whaka by locals) is a geothermal area within Rotorua city in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. This was the site of the Māori fortress of Te Puia, first occupied around 1325, and known as an impenetrable stronghold never taken in battle. Māori have lived here ever since, taking full advantage of the geothermal activity in the valley for heating and cooking.
Whakarewarewa has some 500 pools, most of which are alkaline chloride hot springs, and at least 65 geyser vents, each with their own name. Seven geysers are currently active. The most famous, Pohutu Geyser, meaning big splash or explosion, can erupt up to 30 m, usually every hour.
Many of the thermal features at Whakarewarewa have been adversely affected by Rotorua residents taking advantage of the underlying geothermal fluids of the city by drawing shallow wells (20–200 m deep) to extract hot water for both domestic and commercial heating. A bore closure programme in 1987-1988 resulted in 106 wells within 1.5 km of Pohutu Geyser being cemented shut, with another 120 wells outside the radius being shut due to a punitive royalty charging regime. There has subsequently been a pronounced recovery in the geysers and hot springs at Whakarewarewa.

The Māori village of Whakarewarewa, with its geysers, hot springs and bubbling mud pools, became a tourist attraction in the late 19th century. Whakarewarewa was known for its female guides -- Guide Maggie (Mākereti Papakura) later lived in the UK and studied anthropology at Oxford, and Guide Rangi (Rangitīaria Dennan) guided both the young Queen Elizabeth and US First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

Whakarewarewa is a geothermal area within Rotorua city in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. This was the site of the Māori fortress of Te Puia, first occupied around 1325, and known as an impenetrable stronghold never taken in battle.
Whakarewarewa has some 500 pools, most of which are alkaline chloride hot springs, and at least 65 geyser vents, each with their own name. Seven geysers are currently active.

One person has died in a crash at Whakarewarewa, south of Rotorua. Emergency services are at the scene of the two-car crash on State Highway 5 near Waipa State Mill Rd. Police were alerted to the incident at 2.50pm. Northern Fire Communications shift manager Colin Underdown said there was one fatality and three other people were trapped, with one critically injured.
