A Quonset hut /ˈkwɒnsᵻt/ is a lightweight prefabricated structure of corrugated galvanized steel having a semicircular cross-section. Developed in the United States, the design was based on the Nissen hut introduced by the British during World War I. Hundreds of thousands were produced during World War II and military surplus was sold to the public. The name comes from their site of first manufacture, Quonset Point, at the Davisville Naval Construction Battalion Center in Davisville (a village located within the town of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, U.S.).
Quonset huts were manufactured by a wide range of independent contractors in countries around the world but the first were manufactured in 1941, when the United States Navy needed an all-purpose, lightweight building that could be shipped anywhere and assembled without skilled labor. The United States Navy entered into a contract with the George A. Fuller construction company to manufacture them. The first was produced within 60 days of contract award.

It took two Saturdays and two groups of helpers to erect my steel Quonset hut garage for our Earth Sheltered home. Eventually, it will be covered in 8 inches of concrete and steel, which will then be covered by a hill of dirt that covers the top by two or three feet. The blog post about the build is here... http://www.homeintheearth.com/2014/10/30/erecting-quonset-hut-steel/

We need our workshop to be somewhat climate controlled, especially to eliminate humidity, so we're beginning the process of framing out and insulating the inside. Since there isn't a lot on the internet about insulating quonset huts, we figured we would document the process of how we are going to do it.

Even though it was bolted down, the Quonset hut does not really achieve its design strength until it is grouted in place. With winter coming, I was under pressure to get it done quickly before the temperature dropped and the snow storms rolled in. It is actually possible to add additives such as plasticizers or accelerators to a concrete mix to accelerate the curing reaction so it will set in colder weather, but, the SteelMaster Quonset installation manual warned that such mixtures may be corrosive. Calcium Chloride, specifically, is known to release steel corroding chloride ions and should never be used with rebar, let alone the thin 20 gage steel of the Quonset hut. So, on the first warm evening in a while, I headed out there and mixed my own grout from Portland cement and sand fou...
Historians Richard Symmes and Matt Pujo return to the rare veteran village Quonset hut in Hamilton, MA and discover the trees have been cleared and an excavator has been parked on the site. A rep. from Historic New England had recently expressed interest in the building but the developer showed very little interest in reaching out to that organization. Instead, he seems to have pushed forward with the scheduled demolition of this well-preserved civilian Quonset hut without much regard for its high historic value. It is likely the last intact and untouched example of a hut from a post war veteran village left standing but that never seems to be a concern to many developers.

http://www.curvcosteelbuildings.com/prefab-steel-homes.php Mr. Olen Northern in Palmer, Alaska in Matanuska-Susitna borough wanted a maintenance free durable prefab house that he could erect himself that would withstand the heavy snow and wind conditions of Alaska. These requirements led him to purchase an arch metal building from Curvco Steel Buildings. Mr. Northern built the shell at his residential steel building house in only 3 days!! There has been as much as 3-4 feet of snow in a day and he especially likes the fact that he has not had to shovel it off. His Quonset house is extremely energy efficient and offers a clear wide open interior as it does not require any interior posts or beams. Mr. Northern has been extremely satisfied with his prefab house kit and enjoys the beautiful ...
