Golden Globes

The Golden Globes recognize the best of the best in the film and television industry. The nominations and winners are determined by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a collection of international journalists covering American culture. Unlike the Oscars, many of the categories for movies differentiate between dramas and comedies/musicals.

The 2017 Golden Globes is the 74th ceremony and took place on January 8 in Beverly Hills, California. This year’s show was hosted by comedian Jimmy Fallon.

In the movie categories, “La La Land” received the most nominations and took home the most awards with 7, including best song and best score. In the television races,  the big winners were “The People vs. O.J. Simpson,” and "The Night Manager."

Actors who received Golden Globes for movies include: Casey Affleck, Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Isabelle Huppert, and Ryan Gosling.

In TV categories, the winners include: Billy Bob Thornton, Donald Glover, Tracee Ellis Ross, Sarah Paulson, Hugh Laurie, Claire Foy, and Tom Hiddleston

Meryl Streep has won the most Golden Globes for acting, setting the record with eight wins and 29 nominations. In 2017, she received the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award and used her acceptance speech to rip President-elect Donald J. Trump.

Elia Kazan holds the record for most wins in the best director category with four, followed by Clint Eastwood with three. The 2016 Golden Globes were presented by four-time Golden Globe host Ricky Gervais. The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, won best motion picture, drama, while The Martian, starring Matt Damon, won for best motion picture, comedy or musical.
