Who are these people at WikiLeaks and how have they gotten so much power?

The volunteer website, which has been seriously overloaded today, describes itself as publishing and commenting on leaked documents that allege government and corporate misconduct. Others view it as aiding terrorists and putting the lives of undercover agents in jeopardy.

It’s not yet clear how much the leak of more than 91,000 classified military documents on the war in Afghanistan will affect the war effort or whether it will give war critics ammunition similar to what the unauthorized release of the Pentagon Papers did during the Vietnam era.

The Atlantic’s Alexis Madrigal points out that as a stateless Internet organization not subject to any one country’s laws, WikiLeaks may have changed the way information is disseminated forever.
