Some 30 Turkish Cypriots who went to live in Greek Cyprus after the Turkish invasion of 1974 are living peacefully side-by-side with their Greek Cypriot neighbours.
Despite the recent violence and tensions between the Greeks and the Turks, Greek Cypriots in the small village of Potamia, near Nicosia, say they feel protective of their Turkish friends.
This is the village of Potamia, 25 kilometres (16 miles) west of the Cypriot capital of Nicosia.
Despite recent tensions between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, the two communities live here side-by-side without any problems.
Locals from both nationalities meet in the village cafes to drink coffee and play cards together.
Some 30 Turkish Cypriots went to live in Greek Cyprus after the Turkish invasion of 1974.
One Turkish Cypriot man, Necati Mehmed, has lived in this part of Cyprus for four years.
His son got married in a Greek Orthodox Church - an event rarely heard of.
He believes life in the southern part of the island is better than in the north.

"After the invasion we were forced to go to the Turkish northern section of the island. I regretted it and returned here four years ago."

His Greek friend, Andreas Petrou, himself a refugee forced to flee the north, says he has no problem with Turks living in Potamia.

"Now about Necati, not only have I no problem with him or any other Turkish Cypriots who live in Potomia. But in the event of any other brainless people trying to do them harm, we shall stand beside them to protect them and they can count on this. What fault is it of theirs of some other barbarians did what they did? What fault is it of his? If it was his fault it would have been different but I can't see that it is his fault or any other immigrant of any resident here."

But not all Greek and Turkish Cypriots feel the same.
The two nationalities on the island clashed last week in the U-N buffer zone dividing the Greek and Turkish sides during anti-occupation protests by Greek Cypriots.
Two Greek Cypriots were killed and 50 others - including two United Nations peacekeepers - were wounded by Turkish forces during the protests.
The Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis has called on the international community to exert pressure on Turkey to end its occupation of the northern third of Cyprus.
But in Potamia, ethnic tensions are not an issue.
And if anyone attempts to harm the Turkish Cypriots living here their Greek friends will protect them.
Although Greek and Turkish Cypriots seem happy living together in Potamia, that appears to be unlikely to happen in Cyprus as a whole.

Police reported that one Greek Cypriot who was killed was beaten to death by Turkish Cypriots on Sunday (11/8) when he and another man were trapped in barbed-wire barricades at Dherenia, 35 miles (60 kilometers) southeast of the divided capital, Nicosia. They were among rock-throwing protesters who broke through Turkish barricades to several hundred Turkish Cypriots in civilian clothes. The incident happened as hundreds of bikers and stone-throwing Greek Cypriots clashed with Turkish troops in protests against the division of the Mediterranean island which Turkey invaded 22 years ago.

It is clear that Cyprus Turkish Folk Music is under the influence of Anatolian folk music although it developed its local characteristics as well. Most of the folk songs were known orally since the collecting and documenting this kind of information was delayed due to the unorganized life of the Turkish Cypriots until 1974 under the impact of their political struggle for survival.
Editing of Turkish folk music has begun in 1973 and they were recorded in musical notes. The research for the discovery of the unforgotten folk songs are still going on. The Turkish Folk Music group established by the government and others by private institutions are contributing to the activities of Turkish Folk Music actively today. Has-Der which is an Association of Folk Arts is rather active in collecting and editing Cypriot Folk music and dances as well as some other cultural and anthropological aspects of Cyprus.

Turkish Cypriots are ethnic Turks originating from Cyprus. Following the Ottoman conquest of the island in 1571, about 30,000 Turkish settlers were given land once they arrived in Cyprus, Additionally, many of the islanders converted to Islam during the early years of Ottoman rule. Nonetheless, the influx of mainly Muslim settlers to Cyprus continued intermittently until the end of the Ottoman period. The fact that Turkish was the main language spoken by the Muslims of the island is a significant indicator that the majority of them were either Turkish-speaking Anatolians or otherwise from a Turkic background which bequeathed a significant Turkish community, today's Turkish Cypriots.
Today, while Northern Cyprus is home to a significant part of the Turkish Cypriot population, the majority of Turkish Cypriots live abroad, forming the Turkish Cypriot diaspora. This diaspora came into existence after the Ottoman Empire transferred the control of the island to the British Empire, as many Turkish Cypriots emigrated primarily to Turkey and the United Kingdom for political and economic reasons. The emigration was exacerbated by the intercommunal violence in the 1950s and 1960s, as Turkish Cypriots had to live in enclaves in Cyprus.

i/ˈsaɪprəs/; Greek: Κύπρος [ˈcipros]; Turkish: Kıbrıs [ˈkɯbɾɯs]), officially the Republic of Cyprus (Greek: Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία; Turkish: Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti), is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, off the coasts of Syria and Turkey. Cyprus is the third largest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean, and a member state of the European Union. It is located south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel, north of Egypt and east of Greece.
The earliest known human activity on the island dates to around the 10th millennium BC. Archaeological remains from this period include the well-preserved Neolithic village of Khirokitia, and Cyprus is home to some of the oldest water wells in the world. Cyprus was settled by Mycenaean Greeks in two waves in the 2nd millennium BC. As a strategic location in the Middle East, it was subsequently occupied by several major powers, including the empires of the Assyrians, Egyptians and Persians, from whom the island was seized in 333 BC by Alexander the Great. Subsequent rule by Ptolemaic Egypt, the Classical and Eastern Roman Empire, Arab caliphates for a short period, the French Lusignan dynasty and the Venetians, was followed by over three centuries of Ottoman rule between 1571 and 1878 (de jure until 1914).

Turkish CypriotsTurkish Cypriots
Turkish Cypriots are ethnic Turks originating from Cyprus. Following the Ottoman conquest of the island in 1571, about 30,000 Turkish settlers were given land once they arrived in Cyprus, Additionally, many of the islanders converted to Islam during the early years of Ottoman rule. Nonetheless, the influx of mainly Muslim settlers to Cyprus continued intermittently until the end of the Ottoman period. The fact that Turkish was the main language spoken by the Muslims of the island is a significant indicator that the majority of them were either Turkish-speaking Anatolians or otherwise from a Turkic background which bequeathed a significant Turkish community, today's Turkish Cypriots. Today, while Northern Cyprus is home to a significant part of the Turkish Cypriot population, the majority of Turkish Cypriots live abroad, forming the Turkish Cypriot diaspora. This diaspora came into existence after the Ottoman Empire transferred the control of the island to the British Empire, as many Turkish Cypriots emigrated primarily to Turkey and the United Kingdom for political and economic reasons. The emigration was exacerbated by the intercommunal violence in the 1950s and 1960s, as Turkish Cypriots had to live in enclaves in Cyprus. This video is targeted to blind users. This is the village of Potamia, 25 kilometres (16 miles) west of the Cypriot capital of Nicosia.
Despite recent tensions between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, the two communities live here side-by-side without any problems.
Locals from both nationalities meet in the village cafes to drink coffee and play cards together.
Some 30 Turkish Cypriots went to live in Greek Cyprus after the Turkish invasion of 1974.
One Turkish Cypriot man, Necati Mehmed, has lived in this part of Cyprus for four years.
His son got married in a Greek Orthodox Church - an event rarely heard of.
He believes life in the southern part of the island is better than in the north.

"After the invasion we were forced to go to the Turkish northern section of the island. I regretted it and returned here four years ago."

His Greek friend, Andreas Petrou, himself a refugee forced to flee the north, says he has no problem with Turks living in Potamia.

"Now about Necati, not only have I no problem with him or any other Turkish Cypriots who live in Potomia. But in the event of any other brainless people trying to do them harm, we shall stand beside them to protect them and they can count on this. What fault is it of theirs of some other barbarians did what they did? What fault is it of his? If it was his fault it would have been different but I can't see that it is his fault or any other immigrant of any resident here."

But not all Greek and Turkish Cypriots feel the same.
The two nationalities on the island clashed last week in the U-N buffer zone dividing the Greek and Turkish sides during anti-occupation protests by Greek Cypriots.
Two Greek Cypriots were killed and 50 others - including two United Nations peacekeepers - were wounded by Turkish forces during the protests.
The Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis has called on the international community to exert pressure on Turkey to end its occupation of the northern third of Cyprus.
But in Potamia, ethnic tensions are not an issue.
And if anyone attempts to harm the Turkish Cypriots living here their Greek friends will protect them.
Although Greek and Turkish Cypriots seem happy living together in Potamia, that appears to be unlikely to happen in Cyprus as a whole.

Most of the folk songs were known orally since the collecting and documenting this kind of information was delayed due to the unorganized life of the Turkish Cypriots until 1974 under the impact of their political struggle for survival.
Editing of Turkish folk music has begun in 1973 and they were recorded in musical notes. The research for the discovery of the unforgotten folk songs are still going on. The Turkish Folk Music group established by the government and others by private institutions are contributing to the activities of Turkish Folk Music actively today. Has-Der which is an Association of Folk Arts is rather active in collecting and editing Cypriot Folk music and dances as well as some other cultural and anthropological aspects of Cyprus.

Turkish Cypriots are ethnic Turks originating from Cyprus. Following the Ottoman conquest of the island in 1571, about 30,000 Turkish settlers were given land once they arrived in Cyprus, Additionally, many of the islanders converted to Islam during the early years of Ottoman rule. Nonetheless, the influx of mainly Muslim settlers to Cyprus continued intermittently until the end of the Ottoman period. The fact that Turkish was the main language spoken by the Muslims of the island is a significant indicator that the majority of them were either Turkish-speaking Anatolians or otherwise from a Turkic background which bequeathed a significant Turkish community, today's Turkish Cypriots.
Today, while Northern Cyprus is home to a significant part of the Turkish Cypriot population, the majority of Turkish Cypriots live abroad, forming the Turkish Cypriot diaspora. This diaspora came into existence after the Ottoman Empire transferred the control of the island to the British Empire, as many Turkish Cypriots emigrated primarily to Turkey and the United Kingdom for political and economic reasons. The emigration was exacerbated by the intercommunal violence in the 1950s and 1960s, as Turkish Cypriots had to live in enclaves in Cyprus.

In 1988 he became the water-ski representative of Cyprus in foreign competitions. He was additionally one of the first cypriots to attempt barefoot, while he was also highly talented in trick-skiing. The importance of water-skiing to Mike was reflected on his business, where he became amongst the first to construct a well equipped slalom course for skiing at Konnos Bay. Despite the fact that the slalom course was removed, the sport remains dominant and is practiced professionally within the establishment.
The time consuming and energy demanding jet-ski sport was also something Mike was devoted to. Because of his business however he had to give up the sport, but maintains a top quality line of jet skis available for rent at the watersports.

Educational Visit to Arsos Village - Museum of Folk Art & Making of traditional Cypriot sweets
On November 9, 2011 the students of our school visited the traditional village of Arsos located in Limassol province. First they visited the Museum of Folk Art in the village and learned how Cypriots lived in the old days. They experienced the houses they lived in, the traditional clothing and the tools that they were using in their everyday life and work. On the second part of the visit they learned how traditional Cypriot sweets, such as "palouzes" and "soutsioukos" are made using grape juice as the basic ingredient. They tasted "palouze" and had a great time there! The study visit was part of the project theme related with knowing the local Cypriot cultural tradition and traditional food.

The motto of the Club is “runners’ satisfaction”, that is, no effort is spared in making a running event a shear joy to participate in. This is the main reason that brings so many runners to Cyprus from all over the world, time and time again, to participate in a truly international event like the Aphrodite Half Marathon, an event which appeals to the elite runners as well as to the not so serious ones who nevertheless make the event more colourful and immensely more interesting.

The goddess of beauty and love emerged from the sea by the shores of Petra Tou Romiou. This romantic tale and the beautifully shaped rocks of the shore entices a lot of people to swim out into the sea and touch the rock of Aphrodite in the hope of eternal youth. I've never seen such an island of such female character, never breathed an air that is so dangerous and so full of sweet temptations confessed the greatest neoGreek writer Nikos Kazantzakis. Troodos Mountain lies in the middle of island. Its highest peak, the Olympus is almost 2000m high. Its gentle slopes face southwest. Many people who did not like the heat built their houses or vacation homes here instead of the seashore. The air is always pleasantly cool and balsamic and the trees offer plenty of shade. English bureaucrats also moved here with their families and lived in great colonial style houses with large terraces and took care of their official business from here. As they love to hike in the woods, we have thank them for many tourist trails and paths that lead to wonderful sights.
The purpose of the exhibition rooms, the screening room and the pamphlets in the visitors' center at the gates of the Troodos Mountains is to show visitors the things that are worthwhile seeing on the mountain. This is all the more important as people who visit the mountain in summer have no idea what it is like in winter and vice versa. The documentary film shows the changing of the seasons, the native wildlife, colorful vegetation and offers a glimpse into the traditional life of the people living in the villages on the mountain. This is also good for business because summer vacationers may become winter skiers as a result of watching this film. An interesting fact is that Rimbaud worked here as a headman on the building of the governor's palace. The then 26 year old French engineer came to Cyprus looking for adventure and found the island to be poetic. We can see mouflans, foxes, and forest animals portrayed on film and also stuffed.
There are no snakes on the island today which is allegedly due to a whole shipment of cats being brought in at one point to kill these reptiles. Whether this story is true or not, cats are preferred to dogs on the island as the latter allegedly once spread some sort of infection throughout the island. Maybe this is the reason that there are wild cats in the Troodos Mountains yet not many dogs are kept in the houses. Dogs are only becoming popular pets nowadays. In ancient times and the middle ages, the mountainsides of Cyprus used to be covered with seemingly endless rows of cedar trees. The resistant good quality hardwood was used to build boats so forests became scarce. Luckily, they weren't destroyed altogether and thanks to methodical replanting, cedar forests can be found in great numbers around the mountains. South of the 1400m Tripoli Mountain in cedar valley, there are some 4000 cedar trees all under strict protection.

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean that, due to its proximity to the Holy Land, was one of the first countries in which Christianity was introduced. With their well-preserved churches, the Troodos Mountains are located in the heart of the country. This remote and inaccessible area was soon a refuge for persecuted Christians and a safe place for threatened treasures such as revered religious icons. In Pedoulas, a small village in the Marathasa region, is the Archangel Michael Church that dates back to the fifteenth century. From the outside it looks like a barn but inside are a number of colourful Byzantine wall paintings including Saint Georg Diasoritis on his white horse with flowing cape, decorated shield and spear. Troodos is a low-lying mountain range with many hills and forests and within its centre is the largest and wealthiest monastery on the island, Kykkos, which is located some distance from the nearest village and is situated at an altitude of one thousand one hundred and forty metres above sea level on the mountain of the same name. The entire monastery complex looks like a fortress but beyond its somewhat severe exterior are two inner courtyards with colonnades on each level. Its wealth and fame stems from an icon of Mother Mary that is stored within the monastery’s church. The large village of PalaichorI contains the Metamorfosis Tou Sotirou Church which is situated amid a vineyard and towers over the village, with stunning views. Byzantine art, archaeological monuments and World Heritage churches, all of this is to be found in Troodos, a concentration of priceless treasures of world culture contained within a relatively small area that is probably unique in the world. In Troodos, a tumultuous past and a glorious history accompanied the guardians of both faith and tradition in their quest for peace.
