Digital content producers Zachary Bennett and Karen Nourse have lived for free in their $4,754.02-per-month flat on West 26th Street. They have been living there since June 2010. Back then, there were other residential units in the nine-story building, but now there are only businesses and art galleries. Now, their landlord says it's time to pay out the $410,000 they owe or get out. But their lawyer Margaret Sandercock claims: 'They're entitled to be there.' Bennett and Nourse don't think they should have to pay because of Loft Law. Loft Law is designed to protect people living illegally in commercial or factory buildings. The law was created to bring these buildings up to fire codes and to give rights and rent protection to the tenants. Lawyers representing the landlord say the pair can stay in the unit if they pay, and insist the property is legal.

They walked the red carpet sheltered by a plastic tent, under brooding grey skies which threatened heavy rain. But the stars of Hollywood made no concession to the stormy weather, as they strutted their stuff in a dazzling array of couture gowns at the 74th Golden Globes on Sunday. Bringing a flash of silver were Drew Barrymore, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sofia Vergara and Nicole Kidman, in what was unmistakably the colour of the night. 

Jenna called Pharrell's movie 'Hidden Fences', having clearly mixed up the name of his movie, Hidden Figures, with Denzel Washington's film, Fences. The 35-year-old mother-of-two was quickly called out for her blunder online, and was even accused of racism by some on Twitter. Mother-of-two Jenna didn't let the mistake slow her down however, and simply kept going with the interview.

The 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards took place at The Beverly Hilton Hotel, California on Sunday night. Stars who missed the mark included Emily Ratajkowski, Felicity Jones and Olivia Culpo as well as the likes of Diana Madison, who looked like a fish out of water, Renee Bargh in a floral and sheer terror and Karrueche Tran in shiny eye-searing hot pink.

Ryan Seacrest appeared to snub Australian star Keith Urban in a very awkward exchange at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday. As Keith arrived at the event with wife Nicole Kidman, the TV and radio personality made it clear he wanted to interview Nicole first.  'I'm going to get to you in a second,' the popular host said to Keith. 

He famously dumped her to shack up with Angelina Jolie. And it seems all is not forgiven going by Laura Dern's expression as ex Billy Bob Thornton squeezed past her to accept his award at the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills on Sunday, pictured main. Twitter erupted (tweets pictured inset) following the awkward incident, which occurred after he won the best actor in a television series gong for his Amazon show Goliath, in which he plays an alcoholic lawyer who fights for the little guy. The former couple are pictured together inset in 1999.

Donald Trump is demanding an even larger naval fleet than what he had promoted on the campaign trail. The 355-ship proposal could require an additional $5bn to $5.5bn in annual spending in the Navy's 30-year projection. The Navy currently has 274 deployable ships, still fewer than it's old goal of 308 ships.

Charlie Brotman, 89, (left) has announced every presidential inauguration parade since Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1957 but was told this week he will not return to the role for Donald's Trump's inauguration. Brotman, who in total has served as announcer for 11 presidents during the parades, said he was informed of the change in an email from Trump's team last week. He is being replaced by 56-year-old Steve Ray (right) - a Washington D.C. freelance announcer. While Brotman said he didn't know why he had been replaced, he suspects it is because Steve Ray supported Trump throughout the election.

Chinese tabloid Global Times has warned Donald Trump of going back on one-China policy after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen (pictured right) met with Republican lawmakers. The editorial said maintaining the policy, which was adopted in 1979, is an obligation to US presidents. The Chinese government suspects Tsai will want to push for the Taiwanese independence.

A father-or-two who choked on a piece of meat at a New Year's Eve party tragically died Saturday afternoon at a Nebraska hospital surrounded by his family. Brian O'Neill, 51, circled left, was attending a New Year's Eve party at Provisions by The Grey Plume, pictured right, with his wife Joan when the food became lodged in his throat just before midnight, rendering him unconscious. Four party goers attempted to save him using the Heimlich maneuver before his friend, a doctor, performed an emergency tracheotomy with a steak knife.

A massive storm ravaging through the West Coast isn't over yet as the region expects a second storm to hit Monday night. So far 1,300 Nevada homes have been evacuated and mudslide fears have caused two major highways in California to close. The weather has caused several trees to topple in Sacramento (left) and cleanup crews are working to clear the debris. Motorists have been pulled from vehicles in flooded California waters and the Truckee River in Reno has major concerns (bottom right).

The Queen, 90, attended the church service at Sandringham, after missing the traditional Christmas and New Year's services for the first time due to ill health. The monarch was seen arriving by car (left) at St Mary Magdalene Church with a blue blanket over her lap just before 11am this morning. She was accompanied by Prince Philip, 95, who has also been recovering from a heavy cold. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (right), who celebrates her 35th birthday tomorrow, walked to church this morning from Sandringham House. The Middleton family including Kate's sister Pippa (inset) also attended.

Esteban Santiago, 26, has been seen in surveillance footage pulling out his handgun and shooting dead five people and wounding another six inside Fort Lauderdale airport. Santiago (inset) opened fire inside the baggage claim at Terminal 2 of the Florida airport on Friday afternoon. Shocking surveillance footage (main), first obtained by TMZ, shows the Iraq war veteran calmly walk into shot before pulling the pistol from his waistband. He then begins firing, appearing to be aiming initially at a man in front of him. Santiago then runs out of the frame as people desperately take shelter. The 26-year-old could face the death penalty after being accused of an act of violence at an international airport resulting in death, and weapons charges.

A Florida school teacher has told of how she was protected during the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting by a stranger who covered her body with his own, even as killer stood right next to them. Annika Dean (pictured left with her sons), 42, a mother of two from Broward County, was waiting for her luggage around 1pm on Friday when she saw gunman Esteban Santiago, 26, walking towards her with a pistol.  She dropped to the floor as the gunman advanced, firing into the fleeing crowds - but was protected by a stranger, Tony Bartosiewicz (right), who shielded her body with his own, the Miami Herald reported.

Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the Palestinian attacker who mowed down and killed four Israeli soldiers and wounded 15 in Jerusalem was an ISIS terrorist. Speaking at the scene of the attack, Mr Netanyahu said the attacker has been identified and 'according to all the signs he was a supporter of the Islamic State.' He says there "definitely could be a connection" between Sunday's attack, which killed four Israeli soldiers, and recent attacks in France and Germany. The Israeli soldiers were on a sightseeing tour of Jerusalem when they were mowed down and the shocking moment was caught on camera. The killer, who is from the east of the city, swerved to drive over the young soldiers, before reversing to make sure they were dead, trapping ten people under the truck. The surviving soldiers riddled the cab, firing at least 18 rounds at the terrorist, who was killed.

After an embarrassing New Year's Eve performance and the backlash that followed, Mariah Carey is calling quits on social media. The 47-year-old star declared she'd be taking a break from 'media moments' in an audio clip released Sunday. 'I'm gonna take a break from media moments, social media moments,' she announced in an audio clip posted on Twitter. She is seen left during Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2017, and right in an Instagram snap.

Millions of parents have relied on Margaret Wide Brown (left) classic books for a bedtime story for their little ones. Her most famous work, Goodnight Moon (inset), sold more than 14 million copies, making her one of the best selling American children's authors ever. But Brown's simplistic, child-friendly books could not be further away from her own wild, complicated lifestyle. Brown, who never married although was briefly engaged, had a long-term affair with married man William Gaston, a summer romance with fellow author Preston Schoyer and in 1940, began a long-term relationship with Blanche Oelrichs (right)- a feminist poet playwright, actress, and the former wife of John Barrymore.

Michael Phelps and wife Nicole savored a date night out away from Boomer as they took in the Cleveland Cavaliers v. Phoenix Suns game in Phoenix on Sunday. The happy couple looked glowing courtside.

Tao Porchon-Lynch (pictured), 98, is the world's oldest yoga instructor. Now, the spirited yogi, who was raised in India and lives in New York, has shared her advice and the mantras she swears by in life. 'When you wake up every morning say "this is going to be the best day of my life" and it will be,' Mrs Porchon-Lynch says. Yoga isn't the only craft Mrs Porchon-Lynch has mastered however, with the yogi also talented at ballroom dancing. She was also a fashion model in her youth and acted in movies including 1951's Show Boat and 1954 film The Last Time I saw Paris, starring Elizabeth Taylor.

Australian-born Crown Princess Mary's twins - Vincent and Josephine - have celebrated their sixth birthday. To celebrate, the Royal family released new black-and-white portraits of the pair (left), and with their blonde hair and blue eyes, there is no mistaking their likeness. The twins were born to Mary and her husband Prince Frederik on January 8, 2011. They were pictured at their Christening on April 14, 2011 (top right), and again on board The Royal Yacht at seven months old (bottom right), before travelling to Australia at 10 months. Today the twins are known for stealing with spotlight, with a cheeky Josephine often pulling faces or dancing for the camera.

Across the world thousands of commuters rode transit systems in just their underwear for the 16th anniversary of the No Pants Subway Ride. The freezing temperatures and snowy weather did not hinder New York and Boston riders from stripping down to their under garments. Dozens of cities participated, including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, as well as London and Paris. Participants are told to get on trains and act as they normally would and are given an assigned point to take off their pants. They're asked to keep a straight face and respond matter-of-factly to anyone who asks them if they're cold.

The 26-year-old 800m runner (inset) wed Violet Raseboya in a lavish traditional ceremony in her native South Africa (left) while also celebrating her 26th birthday. Semenya, who has faced controversy throughout her career and was once forced to undergo humiliating gender testing to prove she was female due to her high levels of testosterone, uploaded pictured of the event at an exclusive venue in Pretoria and called it 'our perfect day'. She donned a blue 'Prince Charming'-style outfit while Violet wore a full-length white lace and appliqué dress (right).

While Beyonce stayed in a £8,395-a-night mansion in California, Mariah spent some £8,384 on a luxury five-bedroom snow lodge in Aspen, Colorado.

An $800,000 yacht up for auction with a $1 reserve has attracted its female seller in New Zealand a marriage proposal, swaps for land a top bid of more than half a million with a week to go on the sale. Fiona Campbell (inset) is selling the Ruah (pictured), a former Australian Navy boat with a luxurious refit. She bought the 1944 vessel for her ex-husband but she's aiming for a fresh start in 2017 and wants the 20-metre boat gone. Currently berthed in Wellington, the Ruah has six cabins, beds for 14 people, two showers and all the creature comforts of a house - as well as the seaworthiness to cross the Tasman in heavy seas.

A leopard soars through the air with her front legs spread like wings as she hunts a warthog. The female predator almost seemed to be flying as she pounced on her prey. The leopard had been stalking the unsuspecting warthog and followed him out of sight into the bushes. Suddenly the two animals burst from the bush, with the leopard in pursuit of the wild pig, who realised he could not outrun his pursuer and turned to confront her. The creatures then faced each other in a tense two minute stand-off, before the big cat pounced. Photographer Peter Thompson captured these breathtaking action shots in the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya.

Staffordshire terrier cross Kuta, circled in red, loves the ocean. She feels at home paddling with the dolphins at Esperance, off the West Australian coast. The two-year-old rescue dog also befriended a seal. Her owner Erin Cummings, pictured inset with Kuta, takes her paddleboarding every morning and occasionally has to call her to come back in.

You might not have heard of American model Antje Utgaard (pictured) but the blonde bombshell has been dubbed the 'next next Kate Upton' by Playboy and a 'gift from the Instagram gods' by Maxim. The 22-year-old, social media star who is currently holidaying in Sydney, revealed she was flattered by the comparison but hopes to pursue an acting career. Ms Utgaard has moved to Hollywood to make it happen.
