Iceberg the size of Delaware is 'hanging by a thread' in Antarctica - and it could lead to a 10cm rise in global sea levels
The Larsen C Ice Shelf is primed to lose an area of more than 5,000 square kilometres (1,900 square miles), after a rift in the ice shelf grew suddenly by around 18km (11 miles) in the second half of December. Just 20km (12 miles) of ice now connects the vast iceberg to the rest of the shelf, according to researchers from the Midas project, which has been studying the stability of the Larsen C Ice Shelf for three years. Professor Adrian Luckman, project lead from Swansea University, said: 'If it doesn't go in the next few months, I'll be amazed.' A satellite view of the rift is shown on the right, and a graphic of its progression on the left.
Last year really WAS a terrible year to be a celebrity: Number of famous deaths in 2016 is only expected once every 200 years
The world lost icons from all genres, with the deaths of stars such as David Bowie (right), George Michael (left) and Carrie FIsher (middle) last year year. Now Jason Crease, a Cambridge-based data analyst, has analysed the year and concluded the number of famous deaths was much greater than could be expected - a fluctuation that statistically is only expected once every two hundred years (graph shown inset).
Alarming 'doom spiral' animation reveals just how large the drop in global sea ice levels were in 2016
The animation was created by Kevin Pluck from Manchester, who posted it on Imgur. The data is based on a graph posted in November, which shows the area of sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic lost each year, from 1978-2017. What is clear from both the original graph and animation, is that global sea ice levels were fairly stable for the last 40 years, until 2016 when they significantly dropped. The reason for this drop remains elusive, scientists say. However, there is some evidence that extreme weather events such as this are being driven by man-made climate change.
Facebook's secret picture tags revealed: Plugin lets you see what the firm's AI thinks is in your snaps (and it's scarily accurate)
While Facebook's algorithms help you decide who to tag in photos you upload to the site, the technology also adds its own detailed tags in the background. A software developer has released a Chrome extension, which can be downloaded for free, that will make these hidden labels appear in the top right corner photos. These tags include how many people are in the image , what they are wearing, the setting and more.
Does this picture finally solve the 500-year-old mystery of the princes in the Tower? Mother-of-two claims she was photobombed by ghost of Richard III's 12-year-old 'victim' Edward V
Mary Ryan, 40, claims she captured the ghostly image of Edward V (left) in a photo while at the Tower of London, 500 years after the monarch was thought murdered by his uncle, Richard III. Edward, who was 12, was taken to the Tower in 1483 to await his coronation alongside his brother, Richard, Duke of York, nine (right with Edward V). Exhibitors revealed the massive Prosthesis bot at CES 2017 in Las Vegas today, and they say it can hit a top speed of roughly 20 miles per hour – and despite its imposing size, it’s nearly silent when it moves. The 7,700lb ‘anti-robot’ is controlled by a human pilot who stands at the center of the mechanical exoskeleton, using arm movements to drive it forward at terrifying speeds.

Watch baby spiders erupt from a bizarre 'Stonehenge-like' web spun by a mystery arachnid
Video has been captured of baby spiders emerging from mysterious 'silkhenge' structures for the first time. The strange white picket-fence structures were first discovered in the Peruvian Amazon in June 2013. The structures consist of a fence-like circle around a central tower, which is where the baby spiders hatch from. The spiders that build these elaborate structures still remain unidentified three and a half years after they were first discovered. The video may provide vital clues to the spider's species, and why it builds the 'silkhenge' towers.
