The robot that can transform INFINITELY: CellRobot uses connectable spheres to build unique designs
- CellRobot composed of circular modules that click together for different shapes
- Modules twist and lock into place, to ‘set up movements through visual script'
- It can crawl across the floor, or can be suited up with wheels to drive around
It may come as no surprise that robots were just about everywhere at CES 2017.
But, one design in particular stood out from the rest.
The CellRobot is composed of separate circular modules that click together to create machines of different shapes.
The final product can crawl across the floor using its ‘arms’ – or you can even attach a set of wheels to drive it up to two meters per second.

‘CellRobot is a modular robot, and each module is very simple,’ creator and CEO Jiang Yang told Dailymail.com.
‘By combining modules together it can be different robots, and you can control it by a smartphone app.’
To start out, a person can buy a package with a particular number of modules, with up to 10 coming in the kits.
And, increasing the number of modules will allow you to create bigger robots.
The creators say these can be assembled to build 'infinite combinations.'
There's also a pre-loaded library with hundreds of different shapes you can try out.
Each robot is made up of a number of different components, including the ‘heart,’ and the buildable ‘cells’
The firm had a slew of different designs on display, from a multi-limbed crawling robot to one with two large wheels.
The CellRobot team focuses on education, or programing for education.
Their bot works ‘just as the cells in our body work,’ collaborating to create an organism.
There’s no coding involved – the modules twist and lock into place, allowing the user to ‘set up movements through visual script programming.’

These can be combined infinitely, according to the firm.
It also relies on its X-cell.
‘X-cell provides an open Hardware Platform Interface to our users to attach more open source hardware into CellRobot system,’ including Arduino and Raspberry Pi.
The robot is controlled via a smartphone app, which allows the user to connect with the community to share their concepts with other people.
Since it’s an open platform system, they say they encourage ‘deep exploration.’
The robot is geared toward people age 12 and up, as an educational platform that can connect users of different abilities and backgrounds to share innovations.
