From pink walls to blue food: After Kendall Jenner posted THAT snap, Femail looks at whether colours really can suppress your appetite
- Kendall Jenner recently revealed she painted her living room a shade of pink
- The specific colour, Baker-Miller pink, supposedly suppresses appetite
- Studies from the 1960s and 70s found it can also help calm people down
- Other research has found using blue plates can also suppress appetite
Kendall Jenner has revealed that she is using colour psychology to try and stop overeating.
The Victoria's Secret model said that she had painted her living room pink recently, not only because she loved the colour, but to suppress her appetite.
The 21-year-old posted on her app explaining the paint choice in a blog titled 'The Story Behind My Pink Wall'.
Secret to slim: Kendall Jenner (pictured) has revealed that she painted her wall pink because apparently the colour can suppress appetite
'I decided to paint it pink because while I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with the room, I went to dinner with friends and they had just gone to the "Human Condition" exhibition at a former hospital in LA,' Kendall explained.
'They were telling me there's a pink room at the exhibit that had an explanation of the color choice.
'Baker-Miller Pink is the only color scientifically proved to calm you AND suppress your appetite. I was like, "I NEED this color in my house!" I then found someone to paint the room and now I'm loving it!'
But can colour really help you lose weight or is it just a myth?
Studies conducted in the 1960s studied the effect of a specific shade of pink on subjects, and suggested that the colour could help reduce hostility, lowering people's heart rate and pulse.
Another research project at John Hopkins studied the impact of the colour, named Baker-Miller Pink, and found evidence that it could help suppress appetite as well.
Pretty in pink: The shade is called Baker-Miller Pink, with studies showing it also can help reduce the heart rate and pulse of people looking at it
'I NEED this color in my house': Friends told Kendall about the colour and she decided to get her living room painted with it
However no more research findings have been released on the subject, and results remain inconclusive.
Studies have found that Baker-Miller Pink isn't the only colour that could impact appetite.
Research published in the journal Appetite found that people who ate under blue lights or off blue plates consumed less food than those eating off red or yellow plates.
Shape reported that blue is 'proven to be an unappetizing color', with researchers saying that blue curbs the appetite because it is rarely found in nature (for example in meats or vegetables) and therefore humans don’t have an automatic appetite response to it.
It's been suggested that those wanting to lose weight try eating off blue plates or use blue food dye when baking pastries and cakes in a bid to curb cravings.
Delicious: Other research has shown that the colour blue can also be helpful in helping people eat less
Contrast: Another study found that the higher amount of contrast between your plate and your food, the less you will serve yourself
Another study from Cornell university studied the amount of food people ate when given a either a red or white plate to serve themselves at a buffet.
Researchers Dr. Brian Wansink and Dr. Koert van Ittersum found that the higher the contrast people had between the colour of their food and the colour of their plate, the less they served themselves.
So while the results aren't definitive, there are signs that colours could impact your eating habits.
