Atheism is the acceptance that there is no credible scientific or factually reliable evidence for the existence of a god, gods or the supernatural.

EMAIL OF THE WEEK? Monica was apparently not happy about one of my articles from earlier in the week: bit.ly/2kc3K3J Yes, I think it's petty to stoop to conversations over grammar. On the other hand, one sentence earlier we were talking about drinking a preacher's blood, so... I'm gonna give myself a pass on this one. #NotAllChristians

Bush scripture FIRIS receives complaints about SRE in public schools from Perth to Byron Bay and everywhere in between. It seems each town has a story or two to tell. Tonight we will take a closer look at the small, country town of Stockinbingal in the NSW Riverina district. A frustrated mother explained to FIRIS that she sent her youngest child to Stockinbingal Primary School and wrote “no religion” on the enrolment form. The principal approached her and explained to the mother that her child would have to attend SRE despite her expressed wishes because “we are a small school and there are no alternative activities to scripture”. The mother reported to FIRIS “Other parents won’t speak out because it’s a small town……but they aren’t happy”. If a parent found themselves in this situation at Stockinbingal and thought they should find out more about what religious instruction was being forced on their school they could not. In a clear breach of department procedure the school has failed to put any information on their website or in their newsletters about who is presenting SRE at the school. Irrespective of what brand of Christian SRE is being foisted on the students of Stockinbingal this mother’s feeling was that “I don’t want my kids exposed to it.” So the parents remove their child from the school and enrol in a different area. Here they also write “no religion” on the form. The school responds by sending a note about alternative activities to SRE. The mother writes on this form “under no circumstances is my child to be exposed to religious instruction of any kind”. Her son comes home from school at the end of the week to report that the school sent him to scripture. This system is totally broken and the parents and kids of NSW are suffering as a result.
