A group of fisherman have captured the moment a whaler shark caught on their line was ripped in half by a hammerhead shark circling their boat.

The footage was taken about five kilometres off Exmouth last week by Peak Sportsfishing deckhand, Wes Jones.

Shark bites shark in half off Exmouth

Deckhand Wes Jones captured an amazing display of the hunter becoming the hunted when a hammerhead shark mauled a whaler shark off Exmouth in WA's North.

"The hammerhead was already around the boat, he was just chilling out when that little one hooked up and we started winding it towards the boat," he said.

"He just decided he was going to eat it instead of me catch it.

"It was a pretty big hammerhead, the biggest one I've seen."

The 26-year-old said he and a group of mates, who usually run fishing charters but were off-duty that day due to rough seas, did not expect the hooked predator to become the hunted.

"We didn't really expect the hammerhead to eat half of it, didn't really expect him to really eat it at all, it was a pretty cool thing to see," Mr Jones said.

"It ended up ripping it in half, you can see in the video it eats it and then lets it go and there's half a shark floating in the water."
