Melbourne weather: weekend scorcher

Victorians are being asked to be bushfire-ready as the state faces a very high fire danger day on Saturday wih temperatures expected to soar to 40 degrees in parts of the state.

The overnight low was 28 degrees at 4.42am. But despite the temperature hovering around 30 degrees for much of the night, no records were broken.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Dean Stewart said the overnight minimum was well above the normal January overnight minimum of 13.6.

But it fell 2 degrees short of the record minimum of 30.6 degrees on January 30, 2010.

"It's fairly uncomfortable but not record breaking ...  this is up near the top end of the warm nights but not at the extreme," he said.

Mr Stewart said it would be easier to sleep on Sunday night, with an overnight minimum of 17 degrees and a top of about 25 degrees on Monday.

In NSW, however, a heatwave is settling in. Temperatures are set to reach 38 degrees in Penrith on Monday and remain above 35 degrees until Thursday.

Paramedics received 30 heat-related calls across Victoria on Saturday and another 15 on Sunday.

Saturday's calls included six cases of children locked in cars, although none required treatment, while Sunday saw one call for a child in a car.

"By mid to late afternoon, we should have significant lower temperatures, from low to mid-20s," senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said.

Fire crews were on alert amid high and very-high ratings throughout the state. Grassfires were burning near Keilor North and Mildura on Sunday morning but were brought under control.

On Saturday, the mercury peaked at 36.7 degrees at 3.06pm in Melbourne.

Several people were injured in accidents in and around water on Saturday and Sunday.

A man on a wakeboard hit the water hard at Eildon on Sunday, suffering critical injuries, while a boy had to be pulled from the bottom of a swimming pool at Cheltenham. The boy was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Saturday's toll was far worse.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said a man in his 30s was in critical condition after being pulled from the water at Lerderderg Gorge just before 1pm.

He is believed to have become unconscious after jumping into the water feet first. The man was pulled from the water by bystanders and treated by paramedics before being taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

A swimmer in his 30s has head and back injuries after he slipped on rocks after getting out of the water at Wilsons Promontory about 2.15pm . The man fell about two metres .
