Kids movies leading post-Christmas cinema surge

Boxing day new releases are often one of the youngsters favorite parts of the holiday season. As the children are accompanied by the older cousin eager to get away from the laborious adult conversations they’ve endured over the past few days, and you head to the annual sales, we have seen a huge turn out at cinemas in true Christmas style.

My BT spoke to the Acting General Manager of Ipswich’s BCC Cinemas, Alexis, to get the inside scoop on what was hot, and what was not with the release of new films, and the following success into the new year.

Q: With films like Moana, Sing, and Red Dog, it seems that children have been very well accommodated for when considering the titles released. Have you seen an increased amount of kids attending your cinema this year compared to last?

A: The festive period has always been the traditional time of year where we really see some great blockbuster films released. Last year we saw the release of Hotel Transylvania 2, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip, Daddy’s Home, and family favourite, The Good Dinosaur. This year, we’ve had just as strong line up with Moana, Sing, Red Dog and Trolls also playing well into the festive season. I think the releases though over the festive period really do accommodate well for all ages and families.

Q: Which films have been doing their best since their release? (specifically post x-mas)

A: For us since Boxing Day, Sing has taken out top spot followed very closely by Moana. Both being great family films.

Q: What is your personal pick of must-see film out right now?

A: Personally, I’ve seen Trolls and Moana and absolutely loved both of them. I definitely love a good kids flick so I’m sure Sing won’t disappoint.

And Alexis certainly isn’t wrong with Sing having already surpassed Moana by over $1m, even after being released three days later; surely the punters can’t be wrong.

It seems that kids are the real winners when it comes to holiday movie viewing, but lucky for us, there’s enough on to make sure that every one of us can head in for that cinema experience we all love.
