An ambulance was called to Hird's family home in Toorak just after 10pm on Wednesday night and he was taken to Cabrini Hospital in Malvern.

He's since been transferred to a private clinic where his situation is being monitored closely.

"We wish to express our appreciation for the public support that has been given to James and our family since news of his hospitalisation became known," Mrs Hird said via a statement.

"At this time James and the Hird family are in need of privacy.

"We ask that this privacy be respected. We particularly ask this of the media contingent currently gathered at our house.

"James' health is our primary focus and concern."

The statement said Mrs Hird would not be making any further comment.

Reporters, photographers and cameramen have been gathered in the Hirds' street since Thursday afternoon, with several television networks crossing to reporters live in front of the family home.
