"Thom has been taken out of the coma and finally responded well," she wrote.

"He's opened his eyes, nodded, waved and showed us his butt crack....and is now snoring as loud as ever."

Ms Dover thanked the hospital staff for the work they had done to help her 21-year-old brother, and said she was happy to have her brother back.

"We are so happy knowing that we have the chance to walk away and come back to our son, brother, uncle and friend."

While he is now out of a coma, a spokeswoman from the hospital said his condition was still serious but stable.

On Thursday, three boys were remanded in custody over the attack at Surfers Paradise.

The boys, aged 14, 15, and 16, did not apply for bail when they appeared in Southport Magistrates Court.

The 15-year-old was charged with grievous bodily harm, while the 14 and 16-year-old boy were charged with a number of offences on Wednesday.

Mr Dover was walking with a friend on Ferny Avenue when he was confronted by a group of teens.

Police allege an argument followed and some of the teens then assaulted Mr Dover, punching him in the back of the head.

He then fell and hit his head on the pavement.

Mr Dover suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.
