A teenager has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after falling from a cliff at Windang Island on the NSW south coast.

Emergency crews were called to the island, located at the mouth of Lake Illawarra, about 9.10pm on Friday.

Police said the 15-year-old was attempting to retrieve a dropped mobile phone when he fell about 12 metres down the cliff.

Paramedics and police found the patient on a rock platform below.

He was treated at the scene before being flown to Sydney Children's Hospital by rescue helicopter with fractured ribs and wrist.

Police from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command are speaking to witnesses.
