Thunder Bay is a city in, and the seat of, Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada. It is the most populous municipality in Northwestern Ontario with a population of 108,359 as of the Canada 2011 Census, and the second most populous in Northern Ontario after Greater Sudbury. The census metropolitan area of Thunder Bay has a population of 121,596, and consists of the city of Thunder Bay, the municipalities of Oliver Paipoonge and Neebing, the townships of Shuniah, Conmee, O'Connor, and Gillies, and the Fort William First Nation.
European settlement in the region began in the late 17th century with a French fur trading outpost on the banks of the Kaministiquia River. It grew into an important transportation hub with its port forming an important link in the shipping of grain and other products from western Canada, through the Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence Seaway, to the east coast. Forestry and manufacturing played important roles in the city's economy. They have declined in recent years, but have been replaced by a "knowledge economy" based on medical research and education. Thunder Bay is the site of the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute.

The harbour at the City of Thunder Bay is Canada's westernmost port on the Great Lakes, and the end of Great Lakes navigation.
The Ojibwa called it Animikie, meaning "thunder". French explorers called it Baie du Tonnerre which was translated to Thunder Bay in English. In 1871, the bay gave its name to the newly created Thunder Bay District, and in 1970, the amalgamated city of Port Arthur and Fort William also adopted the name Thunder Bay.
Thunder Bay may refer to several things in North America's Great Lakes region.

The map also shows several rivers that exist today with similar names: Rue Aux Buscies, and Rue d'Oulamanittie, Rue du Pierre Marquet.

The Thunder Bay is a Canadian bulk carrier cargo vessel, built and launched in China in 2013. She is owned by the Canada Steamship Lines and operated on the North American Great Lakes by V. Ships Canada.
She was launched on May 13, 2013, made her first transit of the St Lawrence Seaway in July, 2013, and visited her namesake port, Thunder Bay, Ontario, on September 27, 2013. Louis Martel, President of CSL, Vance Badawey, mayor of Port Colborne, and Rick Dykstra, Member of Parliament for nearby St. Catharines, Ontario, presided over a celebration of the vessel's first cargo, on August 8, 2013, when she passed through Port Colborne, bound for Quebec City with a shipment of iron ore pellets from Escanaba, Michigan.
Like her three sister ships in the Bay series of CSL's Trillium class, the Baie St. Paul, the Baie Comeau, and the Whitefish Bay, she is a self-unloading bulk carrier, with a conveyor belt on a long boom that can be deployed over port or starboard sides.

I never thought that anyone could do me like you do me
I never thought that love would get in the way
But there was magic in the air and there were stars out on the water
On a moonlit night in Thunder Bay
Was it the lightning on the water? Was it the thunder from the bay?
When the night goes down, they are hard to tell apart
Just like howling at the moon and barking at the dark
Just like howling at the moon and barking at the dark
The eyes of disillusion keep burning holes right through me
Down in Watertown, you'll see it all
A willing hand, a second glance at evil in a red dress
I threw in my hand and bet it all
Was it the lightning on the water? Was it the thunder from the bay?
When the night goes down, they are hard to tell apart
Just like howling at the moon and barking at the dark
Just like howling at the moon and barking at the dark
I could've walked away
I should've been afraid
I never would've strayed
But I did, yes, I did, in Thunder Bay
Was it the lightning on the water? Was it the thunder from the bay?
When the night goes down, they are hard to tell apart
Just like howling at the moon and barking at the dark
