Anchorage (officially called the Municipality of Anchorage) is a unified home rule municipality in the U.S. State of Alaska. With an estimated 300,950 residents in 2013, it is Alaska's most populous city and contains more than 40 percent of the state's total population; among the 50 states, only New York has a higher percentage of residents who live in its most populous city. All together, the Anchorage metropolitan area, which combines Anchorage with the neighboring Matanuska-Susitna Borough, had a population of 396,142 in 2013.
Anchorage is located in the South-central portion of Alaska at the terminus of the Cook Inlet on a peninsula formed by the Knik Arm to the north and the Turnagain Arm to the south. The city limits span 1,961.1 square miles (5,079.2 km2) which encompass the urban core, a joint Military base, several outlying communities and almost all of Chugach State Park.
Anchorage’s location on the globe puts it within 9 1⁄2 hours by air to nearly 90% of the industrialized world. For this reason Anchorage is a common refueling stop for many international passenger flights and is home to a major FedEx Hub which the company calls a "critical part" of its global network of services.

Alaska (i/əˈlæskə/) is a U.S. state situated in the northwest extremity of the North American continent. Bordering the state to the east are the Canadian territory of Yukon and the Canadian province of British Columbia; to the north are the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, southern parts of the Arctic Ocean. To the west and south is the Pacific Ocean, with Russia (specifically, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and Kamchatka Krai) farther west across the Bering Strait. Alaska is the largest state in the United States by area, the 3rd least populous and the least densely populated of the 50 United States. Approximately half of Alaska's residents (estimated at 738,432 by the Census Bureau in 2015) live within the Anchorage metropolitan area. Alaska's economy is dominated by the oil, natural gas, and fishing industries, resources which it has in abundance. Tourism and military bases are also a significant part of the economy.
Although it had been occupied for over ten thousand years by indigenous peoples, from the 18th century onward, European powers considered the territory of Alaska ripe for exploitation and trade. The United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2 million U.S. dollars at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km2). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.

Alaska is the largest state in the United States in land area at 570,374 square miles, over twice the size of Texas Mount McKinley, or Denali "The High One" is the highest mountain in the United States and North America with an elevation of 20,320 feet. Anchorage is Alaska's largest city with over 291,000 residents. At 61 degrees north is it slightly more northern than Oslo and Stockholm. Because of the northern latitude, in the summer the days are very long although the temperatures rarely rise above the 70s. But that doesn't stop Alaska's residents from shedding their parkas for shorts the moment the sun appears. Oscar Anderson was an early Anchorage resident, said to be the 18th person to set foot on the area and his house, built in 1915 was the first wood-frame house in Ancho...
Anchorage, Alaska is a GREAT city for tourists but even though I wouldn't suggest spending too much time downtown, it is the perfect place to plan your adventures. Most people might tell you to book your day trips in advance but sometimes the weather here may limit what you'll experience from them. So by doing a little research before you come, then tracking the weather and learning more about Alaska downtown, you're pretty much guaranteed to get more from your stay. The best months to come are between May and September but June and July being the best. I'm not working for Alaska or any tourist company by the way. This is just from my personal experience. If you want to see more of the REAL Alaska, come to my YouTube channel "DudeLikeHELLA" and check out more of my video blogs from A...

In this show, viewers are given a firsthand look at the Crips Gang based in Anchorage. There are more than 115 gangs in Anchorage, police say, and more guns per capita than anywhere else in the country. The documentary focuses on the Crips -- "one unwelcome import from the Lower 48 states" that came with the oil boom, hoping to strike it rich in the drug trade. Here's how one Lower 48 blogger described Anchorage's gangs after watching the episode over the weekend: Almost everyone is walking around packing a gun, and children are being shot left and right. There is definitely no peaceful igloo loving going on... These children are selling drugs for a profit three times greater than down here in the warmer parts of America, and the oil check the Governor Sarah Palin gives all of her resid...

How do the outdoor homeless survive the winter in America's coldest city? That's the question Weather Films, the documentary film unit of the Weather Channel's website, Weather.com, asked in January 2014. We sent a crew to find out. We discovered a group of people who brave punishing cold, random violence, their own substance abuse problems, and the efforts of outreach workers in the pursuit of living as they want to -- outside, beyond the reach of shelters and law enforcement. There's no narrator in this film -- our goal was to show the humanity and complexity of the men and women living without homes to by letting them speak for themselves. Amy and Jake Malouf have been devout LDS church members for their entire lives - living the past 10+ years in Anchorage, Alaska. They have served in high-level callings in their Anchorage ward, and are very well-respected and well-liked in their Alaska LDS community. Two years ago Amy and Jake began to have doubts about the truthfulness of the LDS Church. As they began to share their questions/doubts/concerns about LDS doctrine and policy on Facebook (e.g., the November 2015 policy against LGBT Mormons and their children), their posts were monitored by ward and stake members and reported to the stake leadership. When they were directly asked by their stake president to remain silent about their questions/concerns/doubts/disbelief - they declined as a matter of conscience. Recently whe...
