Petition calls for Brisbane Grammar School to refund tuition fees of victims

One of Queensland's most prestigious schools has refused to reconsider refunding tuition fees to students who suffered sexual abuse at the hands of a notorious paedophile at the school, despite an online petition managing to accrue more than 1100 signatures.

The child abuse royal commission hearings from November 2015 laid out the crimes of child abuser Kevin Lynch during his time at both Brisbane Grammar School during the 1970s and 1980s before moving on to St Paul's Anglican School.

In the wake of the hearings, The Anglican Dioceses of Brisbane announced a fee refund policy to the victims of sexual abuse however The Board of Trustees at Grammar declined to comment until February 2016, when they announced they would not follow suit.

"Brisbane Grammar School will continue with its approach to redress and compensation since 2000, which includes a personal apology from the current leadership of the school, agreed compensation payments and counselling," a statement released by the school on February 2016 read.

Almost a year later, a change.org petition has been set up calling for BGS to reconsider refunding the tuition fees of students who were sexually abused at the school, however the school's position remains unchanged.

"The Board of Trustees has considered this issue and responded to it publicly in February 2016 and that position is unchanged,"  a statement read.

"We continue to work with the victims of Kevin Lynch and have now reached agreements with more than 100 former students including personal apologies, compensation payments and ongoing counselling."

The petition has called the school's approach "shameful" and "void of moral responsibility" and continues to urge the school to "simply do the right thing".
