Today on The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

Back in 2015, Republicans in the Texas attempted to push over 20 anti-LGBTQ bills through the state legislature, however they were met by the amazing activists in Texas who impressively beat back the vast majority of the bills, which was by no means an easy feat.  Now, this legislative session religious zealots are once again seizing upon the issue of “religious liberty” to promote a license to discriminate against queer people in a broad array of areas in the Lone Star state.  Joining me today to talk all about this latest ‘Avalanche’ of Anti-LGBTQ Bills in Texas, what is being done to fight them, and how you can help is Kathy Miller the President & Executive Director of The Texas Freedom Network and Texas Freedom Network Education Fund, one of the great groups on the ground in Texas fighting for equality and civil rights!

The release of the film The Boys in the Band in 1970 was revolutionary for the American film industry as it was among the first major motion pictures to revolve around gay characters and offered a fictional but frank presentation of gay men in Manhattan.  The film was based on Mart Crowley’s hit Off-Broadway play from 1968, and is often cited as a milestone in the history of queer cinema.  Joining me today to talk all about the film, its importance, and the collection of scholarly examinations of the film that he edited titled The Boys in the Band: Flashpoints of Cinema, History, and Queer Politics is Matt Bell, who is an associate professor of English at Bridgewater State University, where he teaches courses in American literature, film, and queer studies.

This sure has been another crazy week in politics what with President Trump going nuclear on the Freedom Caucus and his former National Security Advisor seeking an immunity deal for his testimony about possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.  Joining me today to help us wrap up the week in politics is Eleanor Clift the Washington correspondent for The Daily Beast, where she covers the White House and writes about politics and culture.

Today on The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

Noah Michelson, the Voices Editorial Director and Executive Editor of Queer Voices at The Huffington Post as well as the co-host of the Love + Sex Podcast returns to the show as he does every Thursday to help us close out the week with the stories making headlines over at Queer Voices.  Be sure to follow Noah of Twitter!

Back in January, we all witnessed Donald Trump being sworn in as the 45th President of The United States, and while the experience was truly surreal for most of us, you can only imagine what it was like Sec. Hillary Clinton who calmly sat on the dais and watched a man who as a candidate said he would send her to prison take office.  Also in attendance that day was former President George W. Bush, who like Clinton was savaged by Trump during the campaign, and just like the Clinton’s he said he was there to honor the peaceful transfer of power. But, according to three people who were present, Bush gave a brief and interesting assessment of the event after leaving the dais.  Joining me today to talk all about what President Bush allegedly said and a whole host of other juicy stories is Yashar Ali, who is a Contributing Writer to New York Magazine, Mother Jones, and The Daily Beast.

Back in January 1954, Senator Joseph McCarthy was arguably the most powerful member of the Senate, notorious for his anti-Communist witch hunt, but by the end of that year, he had been censured by his colleagues for unbecoming conduct and would never recover his lost prestige; but how was this this dangerous demagogue finally brought down?  In his new book, Ike and McCarthy: Dwight Eisenhower’s Secret Campaign against Joseph McCarthy, acclaimed historian and leading expert on the Eisenhower presidency, David A. Nichols reveals the full story of how this happened and details President Eisenhower covert operation to discredit the senator and mastermind his downfall.  David joins me today on the show to talk all about the book and why behind the scenes, Eisenhower loathed McCarthy.

Today on The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

Since we last spoke with John Nichols The Nation’s national-affairs correspondent a lot has happened, Speaker Ryan pulled the GOP’s Healthcare bill right before the House was to vote on it and we keep learning more about the ongoing investigation into collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.  John returns to the show today to talk all about these stories and so much more!

It seems that every day we are treated to some new revelation about the connections and possible collusion between President Donald Trump’s administration/campaign and the Russian government. Joining me today to talk all about the latest developments in in this story and his thoughts on where this is all headed is Malcolm Nance, the Executive Director of The Terror Asymmetrics Project on Strategy, Tactics & Radical Ideology (TAPSTRI).  Malcolm was a career counterterrorism and intelligence officer for the U.S. government’s Special Operations, Homeland Security, and Intelligence agencies and spent more than two decades on clandestine antiterrorism and counterterrorism intelligence operations in the Middle East, North Africa, the Balkans, South Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa in direct support of the Special Operations and Intelligence Community.

Today on The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

The House of Representatives is set to vote on the Republican Healthcare bill known as Trumpcare, and it’s not looking good for the President and Speaker Paul Ryan.  Joining me today to talk all about what a disaster this bill is and so much more is Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) who represents the 43rd Congressional District of California who serves as the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Financial Services.

On June 6th, Democrats in New Jersey will head to the polls to select their candidate to take on the Republicans in the state’s gubernatorial election on November 7, 2017.  New Jersey’s current Republican Governor Chris Christie, who was re-elected to a second term in 2013 is term-limited and cannot thankfully run for a third consecutive term in office.  Joining me today to talk all about why he is running for Governor and the importance of Democrats winning back Governor’s mansions across the country is Democratic Candidate Jim Johnson.  Jim is a former federal prosecutor, senior U.S. Department of the Treasury official, and chair of the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University Law School.

This sure has been another crazy week in politics what with the ongoing investigation into collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia and the news that Speaker Paul Ryan postponed the vote on his Healthcare Bill as a result of the fact that he appears to lack the votes to get it passed.  Joining me today to help us wrap up the week in politics is Eleanor Clift the Washington correspondent for The Daily Beast, where she covers the White House and writes about politics and culture.

Today on The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

Later tonight, the House of Representatives is set to vote on the Republican’s healthcare plane known as Trumpcare, which the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said would cause 24 million Americans to lose their health insurance within 10 years.  The bill has cause outrage across the country and has even split the ranks of the GOP.  Joining me today to talk all about what a disaster the GOP’s Trumpcare bill is and the damage it would have on our country is Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) who represents California’s 13th Congressional District and serves on both the Budget Committee and the Appropriations Committee, which oversees all federal government spending.

There sure is a lot happening up on Capitol Hill, from the expected vote on the Republican’s Trumpcare bill to the continuing fallout from the Presidents claim that former President “Obama had my "wires tapped" in Trump Tower just before the victory”.  Joining me today to talk all about these issues and so much more is Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) who represents Wisconsin’s 2nd Congressional District and serves on the House Appropriations Committee.

All week, Judge Neil Gorsuch has been going through with his confirmation hearing for the seat he was nominated to fill by President Trump, and according to Dahlia Lithwick, Legal Correspondent for Slate Gorsuch is in a tough spot because he is squeezed between the ugliness of Republican obstruction of Merrick Garland and the fragile tyranny of the man who named him.  Dahlia joins me on the show today to talk all about Judge Gorsuch and his confirmation hearings.

In recent years the term gentrification gets thrown around to describe the changes in urban neighborhoods across the country, but we don't realize just how threatening the process is to very future of American cities as vibrant, equitable spaces.  In his new book How To Kill A City: Gentrification, Inequality, and The Fight for The Neighborhood Peter Moskowitz explores the causes and effects of Gentrification from the kitchen tables of hurting families who can no longer afford their homes to the corporate boardrooms and political backrooms where destructive housing policies are devised. Peter joins me on the show today to talk all about the book and why the deceptively simple question of who can and cannot afford to pay the rent goes to the heart of America's crises of race and inequality.

Today on The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

Tomorrow, the US House of Representatives is set to vote on the dangerous legislation known as Trumpcare that could leave millions of Americans without access to health care. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that 24 million people would lose health insurance within 10 years under the bill, and the legislation would specifically block people with Medicaid coverage from accessing preventive health care at Planned Parenthood health centers -- including birth control, cancer screenings, and STD testing and treatment.  Joining me today to talk all about the impact that impact that Trumpcare can have on the millions of patients that depend on the women’s health provider each year is Dawn Laguens, executive vice president and chief brand officer of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

Following Donald Trump’s victory in the Electoral College, many Democrats began asking themselves why the white working-class turned their backs on the Party and helped hand victory to a billionaire con man whose policies work directly against their own interests.  And while many, if not most, of those in The Resistance of the Democratic base remain furious at these voters, the party’s political class and the liberal media Establishment are making a concerted effort to convert that rage into empathy for these people; but is this really the best thing for Democrats to do?  Joining me today to talk all about why he thinks we should have no sympathy for these people and the importance of Democrats not trying to feel everyone’s pain, and hold on to their own anger is Frank Rich, Writer-at-Large for New York Magazine and the Executive Producer of the Emmy-winning comedy Veep on HBO.

The Great Lakes hold 20 percent of the world’s supply of surface fresh water and provide sustenance, work and recreation for tens of millions of Americans. But they are under threat as never before, and their problems are spreading across the continent.  In his new book The Death and Life of the Great Lakes award-winning reporter for The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel DanEgan provides a chilling account of an ecological catastrophe happening right before our eyes, from invasive species destroying the native ecosystem to outbreaks of toxic algae stemming from the over application of farm fertilizer which have left massive biological “dead zones” that threaten the supply of fresh water to millions of Americans.  Dan joins me on the show today to talk all about the book and the perils that the Great Lakes face and the ways we can restore and preserve them for generations to come.

Today on The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

In the wake of Donald Trump’s victory in the Electoral College we have seen tremendous surge in energy and activism happening to challenge the agenda of President Trump and the Republicans; and if Democrats and Progressives want to capitalize on this energy and effect change in Washington they need to recapture seats and take back the House.  Joining me today to talk all about his attempt to do just that is Jon Ossoff, who is a Democrat running to fill the House seat vacated by Tom Price in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District in a Special Election on Tuesday, April 18.
Since we last spoke with Mark Joseph Stern of Slate last week a lot has happened, from Judge Gorsuch’s confirmation hearing to Trump’s second Muslim Ban being blocked in the courts. Mark returns to the show today to talk all about these issues and so much more.
