What style of sofa should I choose?

The type of sofa you opt for may depend a lot on practicality – you need your sofa to fit in the space you have and accommodate a certain number of people, depending on how many people are in the household or the number of regular guests you receive. You may also need your sofa to double as a sleeping space if you don't have a spare room or bed elsewhere, so a sofa bed may be the best option. Sofa beds can be very deceptive and look just like normal sofas these days, so there's no need to compromise on style if you're going for the practical solution of a sofa bed.

A two seater sofa is a safe bet if you have a tight space to work with or if you already have other seating in the room and don't need excessive amounts of seat space that will dwarf the room. A three seater sofa is the most traditional size and will comfortably seat a group of guests or lounging family members. If you have plenty of space, then corner sofas are the ultimate in living room relaxing; they allow more people to sit at the same time, there's more room for stretching your legs, and they create a comfortable space to sit around and chat with friends or family, rather than all sat facing directly at a TV.

What sofa materials and colours should I choose?

When it comes to colour and material, the choice is all yours. Leather sofas are popular choices as they're easier to clean, but they can be a strong style statement that is hard to work in to a lot of interiors. Chesterfield sofas are very traditional leather sofas with the classic button back design and will work well in vintage or old fashioned interiors, but again, they can be statement pieces that dominate your living room. Soft fabric is on the other end of the scale to leather – comfort and subtlety are usually the main features, but fabric is harder to clean and maintain, especially if you've opted for white or a light colour that will clearly show marks and spills. If you opt for a patterned sofa this will definitely draw the eye so make sure it's a pattern you're confident will work with the room.
