Rove McManus and Sam Frost have been shunted from their 2DAY FM breakfast show after failing to capture an audience in the cut-throat Sydney market.

Southern Cross Austereo announced on Friday the pair will move into a new national evening show from January 30.

Rove McManus and Sam Frost unite to tackle breakfast radio on 2Day FM (hit 104.1).

McManus and Frost made their debut on 2DAY FM in November 2015. They will be replaced by comedians Em Rusciano and Harley Breen from January 23.

The new breakfast show will be called The Em Rusciano Radio Show with Harley Breen.

McManus and Frost's show has been on thin ice for some time, with the duo unable to make strong ratings gains since their debut.

They started 2016 with a 3 per cent slice of the Sydney market, and ended the year with a 3.8 per cent share.

Their predecessors - Dan Debuf and Maz Compton - had an audience share that hovered around 3.6 per cent when they were given the boot and assigned a weekend slot.

McManus and Frost's demotion comes despite Southern Cross Austereo chief creative officer Guy Dobson assuring Fairfax Media last year that the pair were safe.

"Our national line up is safe, secure and ready to rock and roll in 2017," he said.

Southern Cross Austereo says the shake-up was decided after executives took some time off over summer and a review was handed down.

Rusciano was tipped to replace McManus and Frost last year, with her humour and social media following ensuring she was a favourable contender.

In a statement, Rusciano said she was "excitified" by the opportunity and described the 2DAY FM breakfast slot as "the holy grail, the philosopher's stone - the one ring of Mordor".

"Please note that I included a fusion word in my press release statement and three pop culture references," she said.

"If that and the icy cold cans of Coke I drive around handing out to random people, for no reason, doesn't convince you I'm qualified for this job: then I give up."

Em Rusciano, from Melbourne, has been working in radio on-and-off for 12 years. She has almost 250,000 Facebook fans and her first book, Try Hard: Tales from the Life of a Needy Overachiever, was published last year.

It is not known if Rusciano will move to Sydney for the plum role, with those details still being nutted out.
