Stars attend Fisher and Reynolds' joint memorial
RAW VISION: Meryl Streep and Ed Begley Jr. are among the celebrities to attend a memorial service for Carrie Fisher and her mother, Debbie Reynolds.
Fisher, 60, died last week after suffering a heart attack while on a flight from London to Los Angeles.
Fisher's family and friends - not to mention the legions of Star Wars fans who grew up watching her play the fierce princess-turned-general - have been left reeling after her death.
However, the key players behind the latest Star Wars trilogy are having to deal with the tough but inevitable question hanging over everyone's heads: What will happen to the scenes Fisher has already filmed for the eighth instalment of the hugely popular franchise?
Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently in post-production. According to Movieweb, General Leia Organa plays a pivotal role not just in the eighth film, but the ninth instalment as well.
Episode VIII is tipped to see Leia reunite with her brother Luke Skywalker, played by close friend Mark Hamill. That particular scene - apart from being pivotal to the franchise - would certainly be a tear-jerker.
The eighth film is also meant to involve a confrontation between Leia and her son Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), who killed off his father Han Solo in Force Awakens.
Driver was recently asked by talk show host Larry King whether his character would survive the next Star Wars instalment. The actor replied that it "depends on your definition of living".
To make matters even more complicated, Leia is meant to play an even bigger role in the ninth film than in the sequel to The Force Awakens.
Colin Trevorrow, one of the writers for the ninth film, will meet with Lucasfilm next week to discuss how to move forward, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Rumours have been flying that Leia could appear in the ninth film through CGI, similar to how the people behind Rogue One brought back the late Peter Cushing's character Grand Moff Tarkin. If Fisher's role was meant to be as pivotal in the eighth and ninth films as expected, then it's hard to see filmmakers left with any other option.
However, another idea being thrown around is to reshoot the eighth film to alter Leia's involvement in some way, or her even cut Carrie Fisher's scenes altogether. This path would mean Leia's story would be rewritten so that she does not appear in the ninth film.
Star Wars: Episode VIII is due to hit cinemas in December. Whatever happens, Star Wars fans will need need a box of tissues at hand.
