Get primal with the debut album by The Darts
The Waver Dave

Sometimes bands come together because all the members knew each other in high school. Sometimes members from a variety of bands come together to form a new band. The latter is the case with The Darts. This band features members from The Love Me Nots, The Two Tens, and Brainspoon, and when you hear the music, you'll be glad these ladies came together to play music.

From the beginning, this band doesn't make any mystery about what you can expect. "Running through Your Lies" has a 60s psychedelic-garage sound. The bass line will rumble your insides. Meanwhile the keyboards and vocals provided by Nicole Laurenne provide a kind of haunting sound in the verses. Then the entire band comes together for a loud and energetic chorus that is sure to have you singing along.

If you like the energy of the chorus of the first song, you don't have to wait long to get an even bigger dose of it. "Revolution" is the musical equivalent of a punch to the neck. The melody of this uptempo tune seems to come from every direction. This is a studio recording that feels like a live performance. The vocals seem almost like a taunt. Then you hear the instrumental break, which might be the most furious part of the song. This song will get you moving to the point that you might be worn out when it ends.

In some bands, one sound kind of prevails over the others. That is not the case in The Darts. Throughout the album you get healthy doses of groovy organ, loud and fuzzy guitar, rumbling bass lines, and a beat where it sounds like the drum kit is being beaten into submission. A particularly good example is "Ramblin Stone". To put it simply this song is a great example of the chops of all four members of this band. Do yourself a favor and crank the volume when you listen to this one.

If you had to describe this album with just one word, primal would be a great choice. To put it another way, this is music for getting sweaty. This is a raw album of psychedelic garage rock that features both great songwriting and great musicians. If you're a fan of 60s garage rock, you will definitely like this album. The Darts self-titled album will be available from Dirty Water Records on January 13.
