Do you think art is confined to galleries and museums? Think again. This summer, think step outside so you can see (and maybe even purchase) works by established and emerging artists. Chicago and the suburbs will play host to a number of fairs, outdoor sculpture walks and so much more this summer. Here’s where you can see outdoor art events in the area this summer.
57th Street Art Fair
When you think of Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, the 57th Street Art Fair is likely on the list. The much-loved festival, now in its 69th year, has a solid mix of both local and national artists, with fiber, digital arts, photography, sculptures, jewelry, and so much more on the list. Mark your calendar, as this festival takes place June 4 and 5 on 57th Street between Kenwood and Woodlawn Avenues.
Chakaia Booker Exhibition
If you live or work in the Loop, then consider stopping in for a picnic lunch while gazing at the sculptures of Chakaia Booker. Visitors can look at the artist’s six most recent sculptures, with a seventh to be installed later this year. The exhibition will be held at the Boeing Galleries of Millennium Park (201 E. Randolph St., Chicago) and runs through April 2018, giving you plenty of time to look at the artist’s works.
Chicago Botanic Garden Art Festival
Here’s an art fair with a bit of a twist. Visitors to the Chicago Botanic Garden Art Festival can see botanic-themed artwork, as well as items that incorporate natural elements. The art fair takes place July 2 and 3, with a preview night for members on July 1. There is no admission fee, but normal parking rates apply. The art fest takes place at the Chicago Botanic Garden (1000 Lake Cook Rd., Glencoe).
Fiesta del Sol
Support local artists in a big way when you visit Fiesta del Sol. The much-loved celebration, held in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood from July 28-31 this year, includes a pavilion dedicated to arts and culture, with artists showcasing their latest works. While visiting the festival (billed as “The largest Latino festival in the Midwest”), check out the live music, food, and other events, too.
Glenwood Avenue Arts Festival
Located in the thriving Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, the Glenwood Avenue Arts Festival is just what you need to do in the last few weeks of summer. Held August 19-21, the free event includes works by more than 100 artists, as well as food, live music, and more. The festival takes place on Glenwood Avenue in Chicago, with additional details on the fest’s website.
Gold Coast Art Fair
For many Chicagoans, summer isn’t complete without a visit to Gold Coast Art Fair. Held June 18 and 19 at Butler Field (Monroe St. and Columbus Drive, Chicago) in Grant Park, this year’s artist lineup includes those who work with fibers, metals, glass, sculpture, paintings, photography and so much more. Admission is a suggested donation of $5.
Oak Park Sculpture Walk
Starting June 5, see art in a new way when you take a stroll with the Oak Park Sculpture Walk. The 12-sculpture exhibit will be installed through September 5 in Mills Park (Pleasant St. and Home Ave., Oak Park), and additional details regarding the sculptures will be available in local businesses and on Oak Park’s website. The park is also near Oak Park’s famed downtown area, so you can grab a quick bite to eat after seeing the sculptures.
Remix Chicago
Everything old is new again when you check out Remix Chicago. Items are reused and repurposed into art, furniture, accessories — you name it. The festival takes place on Milwaukee Avenue between Fullerton and California Avenues on June 11 and 12. Live music, food, and activities just for kids are also on the schedule. Feel like trying your hand at repurposing items? The fest will host a few workshops, too.
