The Chicago White Sox have made it no secret that they're having a fire sale this offseason, with the few key veteran contributors they have likely getting traded away for young prospects.

They already started selling, as Adam Eaton was sent earlier this week to the Washington Nationals for a prospect. Chicago is rebuilding and not expected to contend for a playoff spot in the season ahead, so they're restocking for 2018 and beyond.

Should the New York Mets take advantage of this situation? There's no doubt about it. The Mets would like to keep up with the Nationals and contend for a division title this year, so dealing a prospect in return for a veteran bullpen arm makes sense. That's the area where New York needs the most help. 

With the White Sox in sell mode, the Mets should explore the possibility of scooping up Chicago's biggest trade chip out of the 'pen: Flame-throwing stud David Robertson. New York desperately wants to find a bridge between its starters and superstar closer Jeurys Familia, and Robertson could be the guy to fill that void. He could also step in to the closer role if Familia struggles.

New York's advantage over other teams that want Robertson is that they have a glut of young talent in the farm to dangle as trade bait. The White Sox would most definitely be interested in taking a look at the Mets' up-and-coming prospects, guys like Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith. Outfielder Brandon Nimmo could also be used as a possible trade chip to reel Robertson in.

The only issue may be that Robertson is due a nice change of change -- $25 million -- over the next two years. It's unclear at present time if the Mets are willing to pay that to an aging reliever. GM Sandy Alderson would probably prefer to cut down on payroll. But if there's ever a guy to overpay for, it's the former New York Yankees star.

The 31-year-old has notched 34 saves or more in each of the past three seasons. He would turn in even better stats on a team in the playoff hunt.
