Ed Sheeran has taken the digital music world by storm with the Jan. 6 release of two new singles “Castle on the Hill” and “Shape of You.” Both tracks are from his upcoming third studio album which he officially confirmed to BBC Radio 1 will be called ÷. The latter track is an up-tempo song about getting down on the dance floor with a brand-new lady love, which later evolves into a great first date.

At its core, “Shape of You” is about intense physical attraction. Sheeran spells out his feelings loud and clear in the first half of the infectious chorus: “I’m in love with the shape of you/We push and pull like a magnet do/Although my heart is falling too/I’m in love with your body.”

“Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill” come after Sheeran’s year-long hiatus in which he traveled to places like Australia, Japan and places he could stay pretty much under the radar to work on his highly-anticipated next record. He promised fans this next album is the best thing he’s done thus far. By the sounds of the first two tracks, he’s keeping his word.

“Castle on the Hill” is a sentimental song about growing up in Suffolk and plays faster than his equally nostalgic song “Photograph” from x. Whereas “Shape of You” is a sensual, dance-ready track that reminds us of “Sing,” also from x, and reminds us of an instant, white-hot attraction at a first meeting that could potentially lead into something deeper.

Sheeran told Radio 1 he almost gave “Shape of You” away to Rihanna and even considered letting Rudimental have it, before finally deciding to keep the song for himself. Who else is really glad he did?

Sheeran, overall, has such a knack for pulling us right into the most intimate moments between two people, whether they are clenched together on a dance floor or sharing a kiss under a lamppost. His songs evoke strong visual imagery and often carry a huge emotional core. “Shape of You” is Sheeran at his sensual best. We’re totally hooked and we can’t wait for more.
