Snow Angel celebrate friendship on their new self-titled album

William Pankey

Befitting a band with a single called “Big Group Hug,” there’s a warm, embracing quality to the music of Snow Angel. The Bay Area group is the brainchild of singer, songwriter and producer Gabby La La and between her band’s buoyant sound and playful visual aesthetic, there’s an elemental, earnest joy surrounding Snow Angel that’s impossible to resist.

The group categorizes themselves as funk-pop and while there’s certainly a funky swagger to songs like “Big Group Hug” and “Brain Freeze,” their sound defies labels. Much of that is due to Snow Angel’s unique instrumentation: La La plays the electric sitar and their songs often feature the omnichord and other atypical sounds.

But as much as anything, Snow Angel’s music is animated with the spirit of camaraderie. Many of their songs feature harmonies with all the members singing together and their collectivist ethos shines through in the lyrics of songs like “Trampoline of Emotion.”

AXS.com sat down with Snow Angel ahead of their recent performance in Los Angeles, and La La opened up about her vision for the band, the importance of female friendship and why they want to “speak the story of our community.” Watch our interview in the video below, visit the Snow Angel Bandcamp page to get their new self-titled album and be sure to follow them on Instagram to keep up their latest news.
