Taking a closer look at Acropora. It's first fair to say that Acropora has an iconic standing in the SPS world. If coral reefs types had a logo like a major sport, Acropora would be Jerry West. It also happens to be a coral that induces endless frustration for me.
It's always going to be a process with keeping Acropora but it is also one of the rewarding aspects of this hobby. When you overcome some of the challenges to keeping a particular coral, you get the instant gratification of a beautiful reef staring back at you. I guess in the end that is what keeps us aquarists coming back for more and more Acropora.

One thing to note right away is that this is one of the more challenging types of coral. They tend to demand very clean water, very strong lighting, and very strong water flow. We struggled for a long time keeping Acropora because the greenhouse system is has inherent instability with regard to light levels and temperature as seasons change. Luckily, we are getting better at aquaculturing them every day.

Acropora
Acropora is a genus of small polyp stony coral in the phylum Cnidaria. Some of its species are known as table coral, elkhorn coral, and staghorn coral. Over 149 species are described.Acropora species are some of the major reef corals responsible for building the immense calcium carbonate substructure that supports the thin living skin of a reef.
Anatomy and distribution
Depending on the species and location, Acropora species may grow as plates or slender or broad branches. Like other corals, Acropora corals are colonies of individual polyps, which are about 2 mm across and share tissue and a nerve net. The polyps can withdraw back into the coral in response to movement or disturbance by potential predators, but when undisturbed, they protrude slightly. The polyps typically extend further at night to help capture plankton and organic matter from the water.
Acropora is most common in shallow reef environments with bright light and moderate to high water motion. Many small reef fishes live near their colonies and retreat into the thicket of branches if threatened.
