But the temperatures did not dip, instead reaching 32.7 degrees at Melbourne Airport about 3.30pm, while clear skies prevailed over the city.

A severe thunderstorm warning for Victoria was cancelled at 8.45pm.

"The ranges north of Melbourne did see some isolated thunderstorms but they tracked away from Melbourne towards Seymour," Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Chris Godfred said.

Earlier in the day, small thunderstorms hit the Wimmera and Mallee as well as Daylesford and Ballarat, but did not produce rain in the bureau's gauges.

In the meantime, the forecast temperature for the coming days was revised up.

The mercury is now expected to climb to 33 degrees on Friday, up from the earlier forecast maximum of 31 degrees.

The hot summer weather will continue on Saturday, with temperatures ranging from 21 to 36 degrees.

Fire danger ratings will be at their highest then, with "very high" ratings across much of the state – although no total fire bans have been declared yet.

"I think given that Saturday is going to be a sunny day the UV forecast is predicted to be extreme, people should remember to 'slip, slop slap' and maintain their fluid intake," Mr Godfred said.

Sunday has a forecast maximum 32 degrees, cooling down to just 25 overnight.

A cool change will start developing on Sunday and a top of just 24 degrees is predicted for Monday.
