Day three wrap

STUMPS: Pakistan 8-271 (Younis 136no, Shah 5no)

The visitors lost five wickets after tea, hurting them badly. It was good steady stuff from Pakistan before that, however, until another mid-pitch mix-up, and Azhar Ali was on his way for 71. He and Younis Khan had added 146 and didn't seem in much trouble, so it was a costly sacrifice. At that point Pakistan was 3-152.

They are now a long way from avoiding the follow-on but, don't worry, it won't happen.

Rohan Connolly is back in the blogging chair on day four

STUMPS

That brings to an end to a long day of cricket. Pakistan finish at 8-271 from 95 overs after about three hours of play were lost due to rain. What an innings from Younis Khan, however - 136 not out. But without the contribution of 76 from Azhar Ali, the visitors' board would look especially poor.

WICKET! The tail ain't wagging

Nathan Lyon picks up another one. Wahab Riaz goes cheaply, bowled and on his way for just eight runs from 19 balls. Lyon found the big gap between bat and pad.

Pakistan 8-264 from 93.1 overs

Long day of cricket .....

Four overs to come. Pakistan 7-261. That man Younis Khan ain't going anywhere ....

WICKET! Amir is out

Pakistan lose another one. It's Mohammad Amir, gone for just four runs. Lyon snags a wicket - his second - as Warner takes the catch at mid-off. There's a sense of inevitability about this innings now.

Lyon into the attack

The new ball is just five overs old. Pakistan 6-244 but with a lot of work to go in order to avoid the follow-on. In case you've been at the beach all day ... Younis Khan is making his mark, now onto 122 not out.

Very nice ...

Enjoyed this one earlier ...

It's edging towards 6pm AEST. Not sure entirely when play will finish today. We're all hoping for at least another 30 minutes.

wicket!

WICKET! Starc grabs another

And there's another wicket. New batsman Sarfraz is gone, caught in the gully. 12th man Jackson Bird took a sharp but straightforward catch right in front of his eyes. Sarfraz out for a quick-fire 18 from 24 balls.

Pakistan 6-239

Solid partnership

These two are zipping along - 42 runs from just nine overs. The new ball has yet to make an impact.

New ball is taken

Aussies are going for the throat. Mitchell Starc back in the attack. Three slips in a gully. Just a reminder that Pakistan still trail by more than 300 runs. Unlikely that Australia would make it happen, but the visitors could still be made to follow-on.

New ball is imminent

Pakistan 5-231 from 80 overs. Fascinating couple of hours to come before stumps

Summer thoughts

There's a minimum of 17 overs to come on day three. Thankfully play resumed after a couple of rain delays on the landmark day of the SCG Test. Younis (112 not out) is well established while new batsman Sarfraz (9) has made a solid start.

Change in the blogging ....

Good afternoon all. Rohan Connolly has been called away unexpectedly, so I'm stepping in for the closing stages of day three at the SCG. Don't worry, he's not suffering from any of Matthew Wade's symptoms. But, yes, I'll be playing the role of Peter Handscomb behind the stumps ...

Runs

There's the ton!

A really good hundred for Younis. Worked really hard, and brings up three figures with a four off Lyon. Great knock, his 34th Test ton, and it's come from 208 balls with 11 fours and a six. Needs to keep going now.

wicket!

WICKET!

O'Keefe gets a scalp! New batsman Shafiq is gone already, for just four runs, caught by Smith at slip. Great reaction catch from the skipper, too. Bowler was appealing for LBW initially, but it's bat-pad off an inside edge. Younis still stuck on 99.
